Church history artifacts:

I attended a Book of Mormon conference in 2016 and here are some of my notes on one of the presentations.  I was able to learn about some artifacts for LDS church history.

  • One of the bodyguards of Joseph Smith was a guy named Noble.
  • 12 Sticks: when the bodyguards brought back Joseph and Hiram’s body and in appreciation had the rough of the oak casket made into 12 walking sticks and presented those sticks to the people that helped bring the bodies back.
  • There was a musket rifle that was made in 1812, similar to what was used in Zion Camp could shoot the 300 yards while the British had muskets to shoot 100 yards.

Good: perspective

Bad:    prespective

I keep getting the per wrong. But each PERson has a different point of view on an issue or a different PERspective.  Remember that and I hope to consistently spell the word better.

Creating believable characters:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

The following are some notes I took at a previous life universe and everything symposium.

  • Fantasy and SF traditionally has characters doing unbelievable things. To make them believable, they must be normal. They must have strengths and weaknesses.
  • The process of creating the character is the same no matter what kind of fiction you are writing.
  • The character must grow by confronting their worst fears. The most memorable characters often are the ones with the most interesting flaws (a very flawed character that the reader can feel sympathy for).
  • A believable character shows people what they expect. A memorable character goes a step further.
  • Unsympathetic characters must have some interesting traits to keep the reader going.
  • Anti– zero versus villain: anti-hero is probably more easily cared about. (A villain operates from base, personal motives; an anti-hero does good in spite of himself). An anti-hero is different from the non-traditional hero.
  • In creating characters, sometimes it’s good to get up, move around, and acted out a scene.
  • It is essential to live inside the character’s skin for time, to see how they react to different things. (Michaelene Pendleton)
  • Biographies are excellent sources of raw materials for characters.
  • Barbara Hamblee uses the crutch of casting Hollywood actors as her characters.

The vortex of millennial light and truth:

These are notes from an emergency fair/book of Mormon evidence conference I attended last spring. These are some general ideas.

  • Seek out the best books besides the Scriptures.
  • DC 93:38 glory of God’s intelligence. It has little to do with the knowledge, but more concerned about the state of the heart.
  • Book of Mormon evidence.org is recommended for further study.

Censorship:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

The following are some notes I took at a previous life universe and everything symposium.

  • Censorship is imposed from the outside; a denial of the ability to choose. Boycott or choice is imposed from within.
  • Is PC (politically correct) language a form of censorship? If certain words are blocked out the language; than it limits thought and speech when dealing with certain subjects.
  • Censorship on a cultural/social level only occurs when an individual exceeds the bounds set by the culture.
  • PC thought tends to censorship from the other direction. for example you shouldn’t write about black person unless you are black.

Spelling squeezed:

Good: squeezed

Bad:   sqeezed

I keep forgetting the u. so I will use a visual image. Why do we squeeze a tooth paste container or a salad dressing bottle? We do it to get the paste or dressing out. The U looks like a container. You squeeze the size to get the product out. Thus remember that sqUeeze has a U.

Resist getting cocky:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Sometimes it is easy to get cocky about one’s knowledge. I was humbled today by a friend showing me a Scripture about the three wise men. Matt 2:11.

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+2%3A11&version=KJV

I have read Scriptures over and over again and still miss so many things. Because of the Nativity scene having a three wise men, I thought that the three wise men arrived at the night of Christ’s birth the. But with Matthew 2:11 my friend showed me that they actually arrived at Mary and Joseph home to give their gifts. That would be very logical as they would require several months to follow the star, visit King Herod, and to arrive to deliver their presents.

So today’s theme is to always be open to learning new things.

Object lesson: not as it seems:

Objects for lesson: handheld mirror, photograph, squirt bottle with water, mud.

Get a mirror and tape a photo on it then gently smear mud over the mirror so that you can’t see the photo. Then give a lesson about how we can make assumptions or perhaps depend too much upon our current level of knowledge. Give a personal example of how you learned something that you never knew before. In my case it would be about the three wise men visiting the home of Joseph and Mary rather than in the manger.

Discuss with your family or class other areas that we may make wrong assumptions. Discussed possible areas we may miss-understand the Scriptures or understanding certain principles of the gospel.

As you then conclude the lesson go ahead and have one of the family or class members squirt water on the mirror. Gradually the mud drains away to reveal the photo. The photo represents new/discovered knowledge.

Relate with your class different ways of how each can always be open to new areas of knowledge.
