Careers in writing:

The following are some notes I took at a previous life universe and everything symposium.

  • Learn to edit yourself by stepping back from your work.
  • Don’t have an ego. Otherwise your work will control you.
  • Someone else always controls the result of your writing, so place your ego on the integrity of your work, not on the sale.
  • Ask not only the first question, but the next, and the next.
  • Your first idea is a cliché. Your second idea is probably a cliché. Your third idea is probably okay. (Oh. S. Card)
  • self – promotion of your novel. The book company won’t advertise your book very much. You may even need to go on a promotional tour at your own expense.
  • Non-fiction is the best market.
  • Master the difference between active and passive. No matter where you’re writing, it must be active.

He sees you while you’re sleeping, Identity Security:

Morgan Adams provided some great information on personal security at the toastmasters meeting. It was a good topic and decided to share my notes. In light of Christmas he also had a great title.

Morgan talked about all the possible ways that individual information can be exposed to the public. That includes private information as well as family information. Some private information is exposed through government surveillance.

Another is that a company can keep track of your contacts and then sell that information to other organizations. This is one of the reasons why you might begin to get a lot of junk mail is because your name was associate with someone else.

You identity is at risk in such things as medical records with social security number, login information, financial information. Exposure is not always desirable. People could study information about you and then get account information and name information and possibly even guess your password because a personal information and observer/researcher has learned about you.

Morgan googled a member of the club who had a unique name to see what he could find out about them. He was able to find her interests and activities. He learned that she was a storyteller. He discovered what companies she’s worked for in the past as well as names of some of her friends. He was able to view some recent entries on her Facebook account and saw some of the other accounts that she already had such as linked in.

YouTube is one way where someone (friend or stranger) can go ahead and take a video of you doing something silly and you can become an overnight sensation to be viewed by thousands of people if not more.  This would include your future perspective employers.

When you share your private information with a company you would be well advised to read the small print. Because in the small print they can admit that they share your information with others.

Do you really need an agent?

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Here are some notes from a previous Life the Universe and Everything writing symposium that I attended. I found this information useful I hope you do as well.

  • It’s recommended that you sell your short stories and first novels on your own. Then you’re in a position to negotiate for an agent.
  • An Agents purpose is to handle all the legal affairs that go along with writing and selling.
  • Be wary of agents who require you to sign a contract. Read it closely and negotiate it if you choose to go to an agent. Many agents will gladly work with a verbal agreement.
  • Make sure any contract includes clauses in your favor: reporting times, and at times, etc.
  • Many beginning writers should focus on the quality of their writing.
  • Agents can do three things for you: they can make connections (they go to the cons, they know the editors, etc.); they can get your manuscripts to the front of the line instead of the slush pile. They can negotiate contracts for you.
  • As a rule, avoid agencies happily review unpublished authors for price.
  • Literary marketplace: Choose an agent who knows your genre and marketplace. Choose a list of agents and send a mass meeting, getting a background, experience, etc. Reply to the responses one at a time.
  • Agents listed in literary marketplace must meet certain requirements.
  • Read your contracts very carefully. If you sell a book (not a short story) and get a contract that is questionable, go ahead and approach an agent. Tell them you have sold the book and they will likely be glad to do it. They will take a cut or fee. For short story contracts, you have to talk to another writer.
  • Be cautious of agency that edit or make editorial recommendations about, you stories.
  • Make sure agent keep you informed on the status of your stories.
  • Networking can be important to finding a good agent.
  • Contract things to keep: serial rights (you get to sale first two chapters as the short story); and a plus to keep the publisher postponing publication; audio rights; motion pictures; comic book rights;; for the sunset clause on electronic rights; electronic rights include video games; publisher should pay costs of getting copyright for your book; royalty rights on promotional packages (books sent free to sellers, publishers, etc.; Always ask for more personal copies than the publisher offers (by two or three times); watch for you having to pay for corrections after galley stage

Closing the sale, Making an organization successful:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

At Toastmasters, Linda Black gave some very valuable information on how a club or an organization to be successful. This presentation was geared for Toastmasters but the recommendations given tonight can be valuable information for all types of organizations. So as you look at these notes consider the implementation for Toastmasters as well as your other organizations.

  • Club members and officers are the salesman of the organization.
  • It’s important to have the room ready and all the resources available prior to the beginning of club
  • Start the meeting and end the meeting on time
  • Participants of specific meetings should arrive early and be prepared. (If you are scheduled for a speech, prepare your speech material in advance.)
  • Have club officers for Phil their responsibilities and the club will run efficiently.
  • Ensure that the club proceeds at a good pace.
  • The enthusiasm of the members can impassion the enthusiasm of visitors.
  • The contents of speeches and tasks preformed in club should come from the speech manuals and leadership manuals.
  • Ensure that The Toastmaster has the agenda. (Have copies available to Willow people who have need of it such as the timer.)
  • Work toward welcoming new members and take the opportunity to discuss how the club has benefited you in a positive way.
  • Some of the benefits of Toastmasters that you could share with prospective members are improved communication skills, leadership, social skills, and self-confidence. Another benefit is as you present information to the club let them know that they could let misinformation by paying for college course but the more economic route is to Toastmasters. (The advantage of Toastmasters and leadership is that you get to do certain tasks he may have never done before and it gives you a chance to perform those activities and thus widen your capabilities.)
  • When people see how exciting the club is they want to join.

Spelling Muslims:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Bad:    Muslums

Good: Muslims

I keep wanting to put in the U instead of the I. Maybe I’ll remember better if I think of the various countries have the highest count of Muslims. Ie: Indonesia and India are at the top of the list. Iran is 7th.  Hummm learned something new. These countries start with I so maybe spell Muslim for more accurate spelling.
