Characters of destiny: coming-of-age:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I came across some typed up notes from a previous session of life universe and everything. Here are the notes for coming-of-age stories.

  • Coming-of-age means leaving what has been familiar. For the character needs a lot of development so the reader knows of the character will be leaving.
  • The character to have grown to the point that the current environment is no longer large enough.
  • “His story begins with the person who is in the most pain.” Orson Scott card.
  • The coming-of-age elements don’t need to be the main focus of the book.
  • Innocence to knowledge.
  • In a midlife crisis merely a second (or third) coming-of-age?
  • There’s a certain amount of predictability in the coming-of-age story? The details must very (as they do with different individuals in different societies). We may know where they are going to end up, but we just don’t know how. Civilization is an important aspect of coming-of-age (COA).
  • ‘The quest’ is one kind of COA story that appears most exclusively in SF/F.
  • Secondary characters are there to elicit responses from the protagonist (as children we tend to view the rest of the world as being there solely for our benefit). They can also be stumbling blocks or assets in the COA story.
  • Sometimes secondary characters are there to force the protagonist to become committed to the COA process. Reward is to be King of the universe)
  • You’re an adult because you’re jaded.
  • “Any growth into a new identity is a COA story.” Lois Berjold
  • Three differences between male and female COA stories. (The heroine’s journey, author unknown”. The story might be the same but different characters and approaches would be necessary for the similar impact. The end result probably determines the sort of quest needed for the COA.
  • Why, in male – characters COA stories, is a scene that he has to go through a sexual experience, when with the female character it is specifically proscribed?
  • Should destiny drive the character of vice a versa? The Destiny is created so he / she can find it. But the two are strange strongly interrelated.

Things to not put down the drain Part B:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

This is a continuation of info from last week. This is from multiple web sites and from comments of readers posting on those sites.

  • Strings of celery, artichokes, asparagus, lettuce, corn husks, carrots, onion skins and potato peels can wrap around the blades
  • Pour a pinch of vinegar down the disposal with about a one-half cup of baking soda. Turn the disposal on and let the baking soda mixture rinse away
  • Even small amounts of grease can pour a pinch of vinegar down the disposal with about a one-half cup of baking soda. Turn the disposal on and let the baking soda mixture rinse away
  • Hang up on roots or build up in sags in lateral lines and sewer mains
  • We recommend pouring grease into a used tin can or jar and then disposing of them in the trash can. Liquid grease can actually mix with detergents found in sewers and create a crusty white lye soap looking material that is very hard to remove.
  • Some people claim that egg shells sharpen the blades of the unit, but this is not true. The shells’ stringy membrane layers can wrap around the shredder ring and the shell itself will be ground to a sand-like consistency capable of clogging pipes.
  • No artichoke leaves
  • In Japan disposals are forbidden. They know something we don’t. I never use mine.
  • Sometimes it’s best to think ‘compost’. I dig a small hole in the garden and bury the stuff. Much easier all around.
  • Don’t put too many potato peels down the garbage disposal. The starches in the potatoes will turn into a thick paste and may cause blades to stick.
  • Old rice goes in the garbage, not the garbage disposal
  • Citrus rinds are also recommended to make the disposal smell nice.
  • There are no blades in a disposal, a common misconception. The upper chamber uses centripetal force to fling and grind the waste on the sides. The lower chamber forces the slurry down the drain
  • Cut large items into smaller pieces. Put them into the garbage disposal one at a time
  • Feed food into the garbage disposal a little at a time with the cold water running; this will help the food scraps flow down freely through the drain pipes and plumbing.
  • Don’t put expandable foods into your garbage disposal. Foods like pasta and rice expand when you add water in a pot; they do the same thing once inside your pipes or garbage disposal and are the cause of many jams and clogs.
  • Next time you eat an orange, grapefruit, lime or lemon, don’t throw the peel away. Instead, take the peels and place them in a microwave safe bowl. Fill up the bowl with enough water to cover the peels. Place the water and peels in the microwave and allow it to come to a boil. Once boiling, dump the ice and peels down the disposal
  • Coffee grounds can accumulate in drains and pipes, causing clogs. Best to avoid.
  • Throw some lemon slices down the drain and allow it to grind for at least 30 seconds.
  • Bleach or drain cleaners can damage blades and pipes. Borax is a natural sink cleaner and sanitizer that effectively works on odor-causing mold and mildew that accumulates in garbage disposals
  • 90% of garbage disposals that appear not to be working just need to be reset. There is usually a red or black reset button on the garbage disposal motor underneath your sink. Just push to reset.

Decide in advance:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

If we face a situations that we are not prepared for we cannot predict the outcome of that situation. But the end results of many future situations can be predicted by us determining in advance what our decisions will be. Let’s say as a youth you decided not to pick up the habit of smoking. Having made that decision in advance, when your friends invite you to light up, you’ve already made your decision.

I may gain extra pounds because I don’t decide in advance to resist sweet temptations.

If we decide in advance how we will respond we will have a stronger success rate. Other examples of decisions made in advance, could be famous athletes who decide to practice their skills rather than find other entertainments. Through hard work they eventually get recognized for their skills and talents. People gain a musical skill, writing ability, artistic skill because they determine in advance how they spend their time to nurture those talents and skills.

Object lesson: toilet paper, rubber bands, and a towel.

Wrap two layers a toilet paper over a clenched fist. This represents us that have not made a decision on how to how will respond to future situation by temptation. Have the person flex their fist and see how easy it is to break the toilet paper.

This could represent a person that hasn’t really decided how to respond to a temptation.

Now wrap a towel tightly around a clenched fist. Next, put on multiple rubber band bands to completely bind the fist. Try to open your fist and you’ll find the unable to do so.

The towel represents a decision made in advance. This object lesson is a good way to represent a person has made a decision in advance to resist temptation. Many years will take a chastity pledge and determine in advance that they will not have sex before marriage. There are multiple benefits for making decisions of future questions in advance. Preparing for future questions can point your life in the direction that you seek.

Spelling hectic:

Good: hectic

Bad:   heptic

Boy have I been way off on this word but apparently pronounce it with a seven Utah accent which can mess anyone up ha ha. Here are some ideas that ’might’ help. When life gets hectic you need to concentrate so remember the add a C rather than up a P.

Or things always seem crazy when life gets hectic the remember the C.

I’m definitely open to other alternatives to remember this word your input would be appreciated.

The mind of the criminal Part 2:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Here are the rest of my notes from one of symposium panels I attended several years ago. I got some good information about the mind of the criminal.

  • Stages of the cult leader: verbal, articulate and intelligent. Can sway large groups of people. Confidence gets blown out of proportion. Codependency develops between the leader and the followers. Each is dependent upon the others illnesses
  • Personality of leader: God inspires me. God talks to me. God talks through me. I speak for God when he tells me what to say. I speak for God even when he doesn’t tell me. Therefore, you do whatever I tell you.
  • When you hold life-and-death in your hands you are doing what God does. You choose as to what everyone else is going to do. Few of them say they are God, but they do feel as his mouthpiece.
  • Serial killer: he was confused about the other inmates wanted to kill him. Starts out with a period of vulnerability. Often sometimes in early life. False accusations and family as a child. Didn’t fit in at school. He fantasized and began to feel that he was important because of these fantasies. Read Reader’s Digest and identified with heroes and stories. What follows some young lady home, hoping some car would threaten her and he could save her. But it never happened and he continued to be empty. Fast he often begins the life of a violent criminal. They live in the fantasy for longer as they grow older. As he adapts to one level of excitement (fantasy) he needs to advance to the next level.
  • Stephen King said that he would act out his stories out when he couldn’t put them on paper.
  • Individuals involved with heavy fantasy tend to dissociate (dissociate from things going on around him, for what they reconsider reality) actually becomes part of a movie, book, fantasy. As we dissociate when driving. The person is trying to feel what is happening.
  • One fellow in prison want to fantasized to the degree that it would occur in front of him as if it were real. But I discovered he couldn’t stop it and it took him a long time to free himself of it.
  • The individual involved in fantasy would begin to live to support his fantasies and soon his lies began to mark him among his acquaintances.
  • Most people develop self-confidence gradually. As this person tells lies, he feels bad and knows he needs to feel better. He creates thoughts and beliefs to boost his confidence. However, he realizes that does not reflect reality, and so he does pushes fantasies higher to boost that confidence. Soon he practically pitches himself as God
  • An individual who pitches himself dating beautiful women, he plays it to every detail because he feels inadequate. He needs to make sure he does whatever is right. In the fantasy he always wins because it is under his control however in real life it really works out that way
  • An individuals involved in sexual things (usually self – stimulation) develop fantasy. Wesley Dodd: stood naked in front of his window and kids came and laughed at him. Cops came that night but didn’t think it was for real. So Wesley got away with it. Most exciting experience even after molesting many children and killing three that was that flashing experience.
  • Fantasy experience associated with masturbation. A minor injury versus a serious injury. Both receive the same painkiller. For the minor injury, the person feels some relief. For the major, it is a major relief, almost addictive.
  • Sex offenders often masturbate when younger. As he gets older, he’s thinking becomes rigid because he doesn’t want to make any mistakes. Goes with many girls and finds them wanting. Finally he gets access to some terrific young lady and relationship develops. However he is still masquerading behind this fantasy and he feels that he is a phony. He worries that she will see through it. He begins fearing that she will begin dating other people. Giving is following her, calling her. When the relationship breaks up, he returns to the fantasy and the revenge fantasy develops. He also sets itself up. He is with the young lady, gets angry, worries he will be found out and so he kills her. First he feels a lot of guilt. But he is hurting at the time of the killing and feels as deep sense of gratification at the moment of the murder. Person becomes and egocentric, very self-focused. It hurts so much, what he has done; he begins to perceive all people (men and women) as objects. He sees a woman someplace in public, but begins to fantasize. He sees the enemy as sluts. Then he can justify what he does to them. He has rehearsed as so many times, is easy to carry it out.
  • Arthur Bishop: “when I killed a child, it was as if something left me. Conscience never bothered me afterwards.
  • Put yourself in the place the bad guy. His actions seem very logical to him through his justifications

Things to not put down the drain Part A:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

This info is from multiple web sites and from comments of readers posting on those sites.

  • No banana peelings
  • Pour a little dish soap inside and let the garbage disposal run for a minute or so with some cold water after washing dishes.
  • Avoid rubber bands, twist ties, cigarette butts, pull tabs, fabric, sponges and plant clippings into their disposal units.
  • Ice is an extremely effective and inexpensive method for cleaning your garbage disposal, sharpening the blades and breaking up any grease build-up which has accumulated. Just toss a few ice cubes into the garbage disposal and run it. Don’t pour grease, oil or fat into your garbage disposal or drain
  • Anytime I have grease to dispose of, I run hot water, break up grease by first stirring in dish detergent and then pour mixture down disposer with hot, water running
  • Run your garbage disposal regularly. Frequent use prevents rust and corrosion
  • Periodically, take a lemon or orange and toss it into the disposal. The oils and juice from the fruits and peels naturally clean the walls inside the garbage disposal and create a fresh, long-lasting scent.
  • Freeze vinegar in ice cube trays and run those down the disposal. This will keep your blades sharp while safely killing odor-causing bacteria.
  • Don’t grind extremely fibrous material like corn husks, celery stalks, onion skins, and artichokes. Fibers from these can tangle and jam the garbage disposal motor and block drains.
  • Grind food waste w/ a strong flow of cold water, makes grease harden to be chopped up
  • For stubborn odors pour baking soda into the drain and let it set for several hours before running the water and garbage disposal.
  • Don’t turn off the motor or water until grinding is completed. When grinding is complete, turn off the garbage disposal first. Let water continue to run for at least 15 seconds, flushing out any remaining particles. Then turn off water.
  • A garbage disposal unit makes the kitchen clean-up process a lot more convenient and is very environmentally responsible.
  • Pits or seeds will only damage the garbage disposal and should not go down your drain. Stay away from stone fruit pits (peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots, cherries, mangoes), avocado pits and even olive pits.
  • Grind certain hard materials such as small chicken and fish bones, egg shells, small fruit pits, etc. A scouring action is created by these particles inside the grind chamber that cleans the garbage disposal’s walls.
  • Here’s a good rule of thumb: if a baby can eat it, the garbage disposer can handle it without any problems
  • Always use cold water only. Start it running, turn on disposer and SLOWLY add waste (i.e. chick bones, celery, egg shells, rice) into disposer. Once grinding is complete turn off disposer, then water.
  • Greasy foods will distribute a film over the blades, diminishing their effectiveness. Eventually, the grease will begin to decay, causing an unpleasant odor in the kitchen.
  • Hot water will soften grease for about 10 ft.or so until it cools down and lodges further down the pipe where a plumber will be necessary.

Many people will try to depict themselves as different people and what they really are. The people most notorious for this are those running for political office.

Here are some ways that I think are beneficial when you want to find out the true character of individual.

  • Get the opinion from someone who doesn’t necessarily like your target or who will not benefit from giving a positive response.
  • Seek Someone who has known that person in the long term not just recently.
  • Learn of their behavior and words from the past. If they undergo a change of one of the other should be a definite point and reason as to why they underwent the change.
  • If someone has cheated or lied in the past they have shown themselves capable of doing so again. Resist the temptation to vote for someone that offers flattering words. Where they can be bought at the good chance they can be bought to work against the
  • Search out someone’s behavior when not in the public eye
  • Realize that those representing your own political party can be manipulated you.
  • Also, the more informed you are of history, national events, general knowledge and the opinions of both sides of the isle and their goals, the more capable you are of self-thought.
  • Don’t rely upon another’s interpretation. Seek out the original source yourself.

Object lesson: soap and a cotton swab.

Lesson Write an invisible message on a mirror using a soapy solution and a cotton swab. The secret message will appear only in a foggy room. You could give examples of past lies a certain famous politicians or you can use this object lesson in a positive way by writing positive notes on a mere giving a lesson on a positive reputation and house displayed openly

The mind of the criminal, Part 1:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Here are some notes from one of symposium panels I attended several years ago.

  • America has an obsession with crime.
  • Bad guys give definition to the good guy. The worst the bad guy, the better the good guy seems.
  • Murder by a celebrity promotes a fascination, primarily because of the motivations of the murderer.
  • Wesley Dodd: two murders were trial events to see if he could do it. When caught he wanted to die as soon as possible. (Washington, upper Idaho, Oregon). He was not psychotic, was not physically or sexually abused, nor brain-damaged. Motivations were explainable by normal psychological principles.
  • Gangs: members are absolutely devoted. Will die for their gang. Will avenge attacks. Don’t expect to live long. They don’t feel like they belong in the family or homes. They want an identity. The gang gives them closeness with their fellow gang members. Substance abuse is not only part of the context but is part of the identity. Eliminate the signs, the colors, the symbols, they lose their identity. Their violence is part of their identity. Individually they will not usually commit violence.
  • Charles Manson: cult leader (David Koresh, Irvil LeBarron, Lafferty brothers). Manson’s mother was often institutionalized. He went through many placement programs. He did not have a dramatic personality as a child. As he got older certain leader qualities began to appear. He told one of his followers to kill himself, and the men chose to do so during sex, asking his partner to inform him just before her climax she did not relate it as sick later on, but described it very matter-of-factly. Manson isolated his people in the desert and had them play games, essentially be in children. They would do activities together, forming the sense of family. The women of the group would go into town and collected garbage for food. As people in town turned against them, but it only enhance a sense of identity. Goal of leadership after the world ‘ended’ and the ‘blacks took over’. Even after they were caught and he was imprisoned, his followers were still willing to do whatever he said.
  • David Koresh: Women, who ran out of the burning building, fought off FBI rescuer and ran back into die. Her bond was stronger than her will to live. For him to die if they did not was unthinkable for them. A large number of such followers feel unhappy and guilty about surviving the mass death such as this, even years later.
  • It isn’t the childhood that causes these individuals to go bad. It is the result of adult experience that shows they can get away with their crimes.

More notes on this topic will be provided in next week’s blog. Have something to add in your own writing or experience? Please share it in the comment section of this blog. Thanks.
