Here are notes from a church talk by Bishops Ellis

  • Matt 25: after Jesus fed 5 K men plus women and children, the disciples take a sea voyage. From the shore, Jesus sees them struggling in the storm.
  • D&C 98:21
  • Dec 21: Joseph Smith praying for aid. Got message that Christ suffered more adversity then he. Joseph’s challenges will be but a small moment. Five months in jail is a small moment.
  • Our trials will be beneficial to use.
  • In the Old Testament, Joseph was sold into Egypt. After trials, he becomes second highest in authority in Egypt. Help brothers who sold him. Brothers asked for help. Joseph sees what was done to him was for good.
  • 1832: Mob sticks a tar stick down joseph’s throat. He clenches his mouth closed and chips a tooth. He was tortured. He would whistle occasionally when he talked. Signey Rigden called a meeting, intending to take over the church after Joseph’s death. Brigham speaks to the congregation. They heard Joseph’s whistle. There were 121 witnesses. 71 were first-hand witnesses.
  • Revelation can come when you’re not in a hurry. Comes when I’m trying to pray or help others.
  • Try to forgive others who wrong me.
  • Prayers come related to our stewardship.
  • We ask in a prayer, we feel our prayers have not been answered.
  • Would you prefer to be a father who loses a son or a son who lost their father? Remembering his experiences of his Dad, he came to realized he preferred to be the son who lost a father.
  • God is in control. We have to forgive others. In the end, God will make it right.
  • Stake presidents: how to be an effective stake president. A friend said He had been cleaned as a temple worker after stake president. If I had served as a temple worker, for serving in the temple expanded my vision, I would have been a better Stake president. My mission would be to be worthy. Do a better job shepherding the saints to lead them to the eternal importance of temple work.
  • Each member of the stake needs to be worthy. Use a temple recommend frequently. This stake presidency has that goal.
