– Discipleship is not about doing things perfectly but doing things intentionally.
– Our grip of the gospel must be intent not a casual hold of the gospel.
– Sometimes one can fear sharing the gospel or being a part of the gospel because of the potential of other’s ridicule.
– Lehi’s family left the comforts of their home for the sake of the gospel.
– Just like Lehi’s family, some family members were not excited about the gospel. Some kids today may feel the same. Modern families can relate to Lehi’s family.
– Thinking that we were one of those who chose to face life challenges from the preexistent may be a motivation to continue our positive path.
– Just like Bilbo left his comfort zone we will leave our comfort zone.
– Heavenly Father wants us to progress. We have the comfort that can help us. We need to get out of our comfort zones for the comforter to be of aide.
– Nephi said I went not knowing what to expect but he went with faith.
– Elder Urforf said:
– a. Incline our hearts toward God.
– One person reads the scriptures to get them in the spirit before making a decision.
– Pay attention to the spirit when making a decision. How does your heart feel?
– One can take a leap of faith and people can see blessings go their way.
– Another experienced they had worked on being out of debt except for a mortgage and had savings. They lost their job and were able to survive.
– b. help others in their journey.
– Others get blessings for serving others.
– People in primary and youth programs help to build a testimony for our church youth.
– One example of service is of a trash lady talked to a customer who was very pregnant and next week’s trash not on the street. Trash lady went and got the bin and emptied the trash and returned it.
– c. Share the gospel with others.
– One lady had a calling in temple preparation. She was teaching a mother with three rambunctious sons. She challenged the husband who was not interested in the gospel for them to go to the temple as a family. He accepted the challenge and the family eventually went to the temple.
– Challenge:
– 1. Be more prayerful
– 2. Seek the spirit
– 3. Seek ways to server others
– 4. Write down your experiences.

Scott Card’s 1001 stories ideas in an hour

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedin

This information was taken from webinar which was given by the Writers of the Future contest. Any misinformation is the fault of the typist.

– When selecting a story idea, maybe don’t use the first idea that comes up to the mind.
– Pilots need to reset their minds to three dimensional instead of two dimensional on land. Your story needs to address the new mindset.
– Worked on the idea of the battle room for the book Endor’s Game between ages of 16 – 23. He couldn’t write it yet because he had not worked out the other details such as the characters and other details in the story. He did not write it immediately, he did not have the ideas.
– These stories are not about the original inciting idea. It is about people.
– A story is about someone who wants something and they are having a hard time getting it.
– In his college classes, he asks his class ideas of different ideas. Students often provide cultural clichés. A 23 yr. Some stereotypes might be old women might be a mother or at a job or examples of culture clichés.
– All the questions he asks of his class are prompted from the perspective of a 4 yr. old who would ask questions.
– Why is someone breaking up (marriage)? 4 yr. old ask from causality.
– There are always mechanical forces that influence peoples’ lives. But people responded to things due to their motivation.
– You don’t have a story until you have order presentations of casually related events. That is stuff that happens. Your audience may influence the writer on how in what order you present information to your audience.
– You need to know what your audience will already know. You will want them to learn something new in your story. You need to let the reader know the motivation behind your characters.
– When you have to have someone driving a car y9u don’t have to share the step by step of starting, driving a car of how an engine works. Your reader already knows those details. You don’t have to give details of things that the reader already knows.
– Characterization only begins when there is a second character and how they interact with each other.
– There needs to be obstacles or delays in a story that prevents the character from achieving their goal.
– Three are structures for stories. Plotting from Shakespeare was telling what characters needed to be in the next scene. Giving details about an object in a house such as a hat will emphasize the importance of that object in the story. You may ask why was a certain character killed in a murder mystery. The story is completed when we understand the motives and actions of why the murderer killed someone.
– Stories should not be an idea story.
– There are several structures for stories in fiction. It is a tool for you as a writer to see where your story begins.
– A. idea story: questions answer is an idea story.
– B. Minue story> swept up by a tornado and you arrive at a place that is filled in color. Story examples are the hobbit, wizard of Oz or Gulliver travels. You would have a lot of little stories or event in the story that gives you a chance to explore the world. The story ends when you return back to your home.
– C. event story: one used by Lord of the rings. Something is deeply wrong with the world. The story begins when the person who will fix the issue gets involved in the story. It ends when the problem is solved.
– D. Fourth story structure the character story. It is actually a subset of the event story.
– The inciting incident is where the character changes their life.
– If you want readers you need a story that when they are done reading it, the reader feels that is the right solution to the story.
– You need to have a story that the reader will want to pass that story/movie/book on to others.

Difference between a base and a post

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedin

The Air Force is stationed at a base.
The Army is stationed at a post.

How to remember the difference?

A post is something you pound or insert into the ground. Soldiers perform their work on the ground and live on a post.

How we adapt after a crisis has happened and what to put in place.

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedin

The panel discussion was a part of an online discussion under the header Leadership in Crisis. The panel was occupied by Event Chairs. It was presented through Essence of Wonder. The host asking questions was Christopher Garcia.
Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

Helen Montgomery: working on conventions for years including world cons. professionally, she is a social worker.
Patty Wells: chaired Reno world on in 2011. Worked many cons. professional a crisis counselor.
Vincent Docherty: first conventions 1968. Worked at various levels on cons. professional coach for a large company
Dragos Ruiu: do computer security sored in security for decades.
Ginny Patrick Smith: co char for world fantasy.

Q: where does holding pattern and where does that put you on your individual projects?
– Helen Montgomery: Working with con Zealand and working on-site selection for a digital convention. Hoping things will be back to normal.
– Find it hard to see what to expect in the future.
– Ginny Smith: we’re doing contingency planning. We are considering an option for virtual or in place. Do partially and offer virtual options.
– We had no seed money and rely on membership.
– Vincent Docherty: we had to do cancelations on smaller conventions i.e. Bosco form hell. Some world cons have increased membership so fast had to pull back. Conventions have been face to face.
– Virtual worked very well.
– Let’s build from what we are learning from these new experiences. Cons started as gatherings of fans of mutual interests.
– Dragos Ruiu: month ago: it became only virtual. Contract decisions need to be made.
Q: How does looking forward to influence decision-makers:
– Patty wells: need to step back if you can communicate frequently and in small bits and very clearly. People are more likely to take in information for staff or the audience.
Q: When you looking out from where you’re sitting today, how do you feel you should have planned differently?
– Ginny Patrick Smith: new to con running. I got a lot of experience co-leadership and a lot of new people. Drawing heavily on leaders who have been on concoms before.
– Dragos Ruiu: need to be flexible. A lot of con work is triage. Most stressful when on an international flight, a staff member was hemereging in the airplane bathroom. I see the current situation as another opportunity.
– Helen Montgomery: This is very new and different. All events are influenced by local and national governments.
Q: is the slate wiped clean. Is this the giant reset button?
– Vincent Docherty: stay physical in one place and virtual connection. If you have access to technology. We don’t know what to expect when the pendulum switches back. Virtual communicate maybe come more central to our lives.
– Helen Montgomery: people don’t like change. Many people will want things to go back to what they were. There will be more hand sanitizer in the con suite.
– Going virtually can provide more accessibility.
– Dragos Ruiu: Technology is relatively new. The panelists can talk to each other but the attendees can’t interact.
Q: What sort of methodology of communicating with staff and attendees.
– Ginny Patrick smith: snap channel. I still use group emails as a committee.
– With attendees have a website and mail chimp and regular mailing.

– Realizes we need to send out a new mailer that the committee can give an update of what is being done or still being decided upon.

– Helen Montgomery: Not a big social media person. Now need to do a pivot to connect to our supports and it is more of a challenge. It is hard to focus on.

– Dragos Ruiu: Noticed things are running slow. People are struggling with home life, getting groceries. It like we wrote our plans on a rubber band. We’ve pressed reset on all the calendars and we are not sure when things will really happen.

When looking at scenarios when things are so bubbly when do you make your move. To cancel or move forward.
– Vincent Docherty: scenarios are how you stress test our plans. Sometimes things in life happens in real life are so big. You need to realize and it may not survive with reality. You need to give people time to respond. That is why communication is so important. You show that everyone is part of the event.
– Everyone needs to prioritize. We need to listen more to help determine what is working or not. Think of your channels of communication. Each may cater to certain people.
– Gadi Evron: we need to have empathy.

Q: what you planning jenny.
– Ginny Smith’s group is working on different possibilities.
– Need to cadre to possible social distancing needs which means not close sitting in a panel room.
– We need to alter attendance for virtual discounts.
– Helen Montgomery: conventions will be wearing masks. Maybe get masks with the convention logo.
– Chat group gave this Facebook link; https://www.meetingsnet.com/negotiatingcontracts/cancellation-and-force-majeure-issues-sars-era
– https://www.natlawreview.com/article/contractual-performance-age-coronavirus-force-majeure-impossibility-and-other
– Dragos Ruiu: will have a camera that will take people’s temperature. Concern
– Helen Montgomery: food costs drop by low attendance but technology costs will increase.

Q: what do major events look like to 2020 and beyond?
– Christopher Garcia: Were going to the single track con.

Media and the gospel

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedin

Notes from a talk at church. Any inaccuracies are the fault of the note taker.

– Was 10 years old when star wars came out.
– Made films since he was 10.
– Adults spend about 11 hrs. or 2/3 of their waking time-consuming media in some form.
– Media is geared to motivate us such as buy things or to be laugh or cry.
– He moved his career from the story of telling to the reality of movie business. It is a very ideological business. It’s all about me. The savior has a counter-message about others and serving others.
– The movie business is very selfish. Some people who leave the church are those related to the movie business.
– There are good stories to tell; but, you need to be very picky. Things that you watch need to be based on things of the heart.
– Want to see. Not just things that are pg. or
– Elder Packer: (paraphrase) the mind is a blank stage. You always want to fill it. Here is a quote from the first presidency. They originally referenced music but the speaker replaced the quote with movies. ‘Movies influence man’s ability to express himself goes beyond the spoken language. It can be used to exalt or inspire or promote degradation. We need to seek the guidance of the spirit to seek the entertainment we seek.
– Movies replaced music.
– We need to balance our lives. It if is not worth seeing then don’t fill our homes with it.
