Media and the gospel

Notes from a talk at church. Any inaccuracies are the fault of the note taker.

– Was 10 years old when star wars came out.
– Made films since he was 10.
– Adults spend about 11 hrs. or 2/3 of their waking time-consuming media in some form.
– Media is geared to motivate us such as buy things or to be laugh or cry.
– He moved his career from the story of telling to the reality of movie business. It is a very ideological business. It’s all about me. The savior has a counter-message about others and serving others.
– The movie business is very selfish. Some people who leave the church are those related to the movie business.
– There are good stories to tell; but, you need to be very picky. Things that you watch need to be based on things of the heart.
– Want to see. Not just things that are pg. or
– Elder Packer: (paraphrase) the mind is a blank stage. You always want to fill it. Here is a quote from the first presidency. They originally referenced music but the speaker replaced the quote with movies. ‘Movies influence man’s ability to express himself goes beyond the spoken language. It can be used to exalt or inspire or promote degradation. We need to seek the guidance of the spirit to seek the entertainment we seek.
– Movies replaced music.
– We need to balance our lives. It if is not worth seeing then don’t fill our homes with it.
