facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedin

This was a presentation given by Hanna and James stodderedd. These are notes from a Book of Mormon conference. Any misinformation is the fault of the typist.

– Some of the Nephities survived the destruction of Lamanites and moved to Europe.
– Niflung: trip in grand alps knows as the hiflung. Islamic text stating that the father was descends of a prince named nefi. From the king came the high born.

– Oral traditions say the Saxons arrived by ship
– Something unique about the Saxons. They seem to be the leaders with a greater desire for freedom. Migrate from the Germanic tribe and migrate to the British Isles.
– Trace the blood and trace how they act to find their origin.
– During the reformation, the chief prince wanted to squash the printed bible and to suppress freedom of religion. The princes united against the prince that they would have their heads chopped off rather than submit to the suppression of religious freedom.
– This could all be just a coincidence of the similarities of government, religion, dress, etc.
– Celtic Ogm 800 BC type of writing in new England shows up in New England. Nephites’ disintegrations dilemma> Nephi cultures fall apart. How can all the people be righteous and in 3 years none are righteous? One theory is that the righteous moved.
– Jacob 3: the righteous will leave.
– Helaman: When you get so wicked, you’ll cast the righteous out.
– Dc 3: there are Nephites alive today. And they will receive the Book of Mormon that is the writing of their fathers.
– Some of the tribes have a story that the son of God came to them. One documentary commenter said the Germanic spirit is the spirit of freedom.
– One way to track the Nephi is to track the type of people who value freedom. (Romans worked hard to destroy these tribes history) such people in Northern Europe.
– About 400 AD the Germanic tribes concurred Rome. Invaded.
– One documented of alternate histories calls them dirty smelly thugs. Romans said they had no written language, no education, and lived in tents.
– Making of America by Cleon Skousen chapter 1> government came from Thomas Jefferson.
– He said he took it from the Anglo Saxon. He wanted the US citizen to have an Anglo Saxon language of US citizens. Wanted all universities to teach Anglo Saxon to universities.
– Jefferson said they had the wisest & most perfect form of government.
– To do a comparison of Anglo Saxon and Book Of Mormon.
– Jefferson wanted to create Anglo Saxon renaissance.
– Oaths: 4:45-60.
– 3 Nephites will work with their descendants.
– Most of us might have Nephite blood.
– To bring forth anything important in life all hell will happen to stop you.

Writing a series (in Picture Books)

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedin

These are notes from a webinar hosted by Write4Kids. It was given by Josh Funk at joshfunkbooks.com.
His books look delightful.

Q: How do come up with a great concept that holds a book series together and has enough room to write a lot of different books?
A: The author wants to see what would be fun to be illustrated.
Don’t normally plan a series when doing the first book.

Q: If the first PB becomes popular do editors ask for more?
A: He pays attention to children’s bookshelf from publishers weekly. It gives a list of what books have sold.
When he sees excitement about his current book inspires him to do more books.
It is good to have a wide breadth of subjects for your books

Q: PB needs to be standalone. You have a strong hook for the series and your characters are interesting.
A: He thinks of it like a sitcom which is based on the characters. They are not so much procedurals. He sees his like they are episodes in their lives.
You don’t have to read them in order. Each does need to be stand-alone and you have to reintroduce the characters.
He does try to set up a variety in a series. One is a race, another is an adventure, a mystery, and a magic body swap.

Q: you have such a range of subjects in your books. How do you do accomplish that?
A: He reads a lot of picture books.

Q; I see you need a good hook in medi-fractures fairy tale story?
A: It’s a fractured story because the characters don’t want to do what they’re supposed to be. Metta is crossing the 4th wall.
Once you know the pacing and you know where the story is going to go or how illustrations will be handled, it’s easier to do a sequel picture book. For the little riding hood had the story take a different tangent.

Q: Part of the success of this is readers know what the original story is but your characters are not following the rules.
A: It has to be fairytale people are already familiar with. He wanted to choose stories that people are familiar with but not choose ones that have been overly done.

Q: If you can’t’ publish your first book? How about self-publishing?
A: It is hard to sell a sequel to a self-published book. To produce it, it will be more expensive.
More success if you Professional publish the first book.
You need a good illustrator if you are self-published. You need to commit to doing all the series. Be ready for the economic investment. *

Q: how to put together a picture book submission package.
A: Still get black holes and the query disappears.
With his agent, he sold 6 of his 12 books. Those 12 books were sent to 154 publishers.
It’s worth it and it only takes one yes to get published
Write a lot and write a lot of different things.

Q: How does one make on average on a PB? Get $25,000 k words is the high end. Many PB pay $2 K. Search advance of royalties to find out advances.
If you start seeing book reprints you know the book is good.
Jane Yoland said that when you sell 30 different books you are successful.

Q: How to do page number in the manuscript?
A: Presenter: doesn’t give page numbers. Some write like a play
A: Author: Most picture books are 40 pages with 16 spreads.
Paginating helps him in the blocking of the story.
You can see which pages have too many lines and another page too little.
Paginate when there is a new picture.

Q: How to you write the text and not worry what the illustrations will be?
A: Many authors don’t think of how their book will be illustrated when writing. Try to stay general in your head. Don’t need to give details.
Sometimes people will see things in your book that the author never intended.

Q illustrator notes:
A: Simplify, just say “toy under the bed’ if you have a visual joke.
He hears that a lot of agents don’t like illustrator notes.

Q; How do you know you’re done revisiting a manuscript?
A: When critique partners don’t have much to add. It’s important to have critique partners who are better writers than you.
It can be considered done when the author likes it after coming back to it.
He had a whole bunch of partners. He has different sources and knows the different strengths of different reviews (one or two people). When you send books to new people a second time the reader is invested. You need to determine if not much feedback is because it is good or because the reader is not interested in it.
If you don’t’ know if a book is done, do something else and then come back and see if you still love it. Wait on responding on a review’s advice see if you agree or note.

The three As

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedin

These are notes from a church talk. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

Agency:
– When you pick up a stick by one end you get the other end too. When you make a decision and you carry out the threat / intent you have for that stick. Maybe you’ll see the dirt on the other end you can toss it. Some people will be supportive of how you use the stick. This is agency and accountability.
– Strength of youth: quote: Heavenly Father has given you agency to act for yourself.
– The right to direct your life is one of God’s greatest blessings to you.
– You are responsible for the choices you make.
– While you are free to choose your course or actions you are not free to avoid the consequences.
Atonement:
– When our garments become dirty with sin the atonement can atone for the winds of the world.
Adversity:
– Alma and Amulic: Amulic lost friends after he becomes converted to the gospel. Alma takes Amulic to his home.
– James 1:22 be ye doers of the work
– James 1:25: doers work shall be blessed in the deed.
– Storms will come to take us down. The adversary is increasing his attack on faith. We need a counter-strategy. We need proactive plans such as Come Follow Me. Putting these acts into place will fortify our families.
– There are thorns that go with the roses.
– Elder Legrand: our major success is simply trying over and over.
– Elder Cook: the goal is to obtain a deep and last conversion of adults and the rising generations.
– Rely upon Christ to change our hearts.
– It requires consistent and daily efforts to live the gospel of Christ.
– Use the hog to learn and link other gospel truths Elder Bednar says. We are blessed to receive precious perspectives and increase spiritual capacity and ears that can hear his voice.
– Some have seen the Lord’s hands in their lives.
– Youth song: he has given us directions so he can bless us with his grace. .. Follow whatever he says we’ll be forever changed.
– Mathew 7: a foundation is built upon a rock. Is like a man who hears the word of the Lord.
– Come follow me: it asks questions for you to think about or to notice patterns in themes. The pattern of shepherds listen, act, and testify. Was a pattern.
– Follows these suggestions we will be fortified against the adversary.

– Looking at Publishers Weekly on pg. 4 talked about Editor Kymon Carp taking over on Simon and Schuster. Past editor passed away. As for the pandemic books, sales have not dropped much. The center has held.
– pg. 5 article, authors’ fight for diversity.
– Getting more POC material needs to come from the top down.

– Q: do you think changes will come from the bottom from the small press?

– A: Emma suspects that publishers paying should be paying attention on twitter from people of color.
– The publishing industry is paying attention to publishing around the world.
– Talking to other publishers and editors. – Many felt that the audience for People of Color books was not large. Maybe since 1980. Emma says it has started to change but that option is wrong.

– Q: suggest to African American authors: submit your work. Raise your voice. Be involved in twitter. Some agents opening to African Americans for the month of June. Query agents

– Q: What are editors and agents doing during COVID 19> still working from home. Many will not let their staff back into the office until Sept. There is no reason to not proceed. If your work is not ready, get it ready. Therese room for everyone. Submit professional. And be patient in terms to your craft. If you see opportunities, take them.
– Q: will CV 19 influence published books and advanced. Some publishers downgrading advances due to cash problems.
– The big advances may not relate to the ‘normal’ authors’.
– Advances used to be going out in halves. Payments are starting to go in thirds. 1/2 signing. 2. Payment when published. 3rd is later.
– Now getting payment sign, delivery, third. And 4 publications.
– She does not expect Simon and Schuler’s or Random are going under. Maybe see some restructuring and layoffs. These changes were done a long time before COVID. Emma things they will still publish books.

Ezra’s Eagle by James Prout

facebooktwittergoogle_plusredditpinterestlinkedin

These are notes from a Book of Mormon conference. Any misinformation is the fault of the typist. I was typing as quickly as I could but was having a hard time keeping up. This presentation tells how Ezra’s eagle, relates to the US and world government. His website is wwwlastdaystimeline.com. Ezra’s eagle is found in one of the Apocrypha books which are books that were removed from the bible.

– I googled for a photo of the eagle:
https://www.google.com/search?q=ezra+eagle+picture&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=-EW3jh9K3p6PHM%252CDq3Jqcs5BOgJ1M%252C_&vet=1&usg=AI4_-kQowk0au59XTdIs3-9XBvjvE8Je7g&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwikuM62lp3qAhUJa80KHceaBTMQ9QEwAnoECAgQCA&biw=1280&bih=881#imgrc=-EW3jh9K3p6PHM

– What if you could know the future of the nations? There is a prophecy in one of the books of the Dead Sea scrolls called the Book of Ezra.
– I googled for a dead sea scrolls link: https://www.museumofthebible.org/book/minutes/439?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc-grant&utm_campaign=high-funnel-topical-know-intent&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-InjiZmd6gIVysDACh2Angq5EAAYASAAEgKBgfD_BwE
– I googled for a Book of Ezra link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Ezra
– I googled for the book of Ezra link but I may have the wrong link as I’m not sure which chapters these verses refer to https://biblescripture.net/Ezra.html
– How can Ezra eagle tell us in the Book of Mormon timeline? The eagle is a reference to the US presidents starting at the president before President Roosevelt
– The Ezra Eagle has a three-headed eagle heads that are all are sleeping, has wings of different lengths and claws. The wing structure of US presidents.
– Starting on the right side at the bottom:
– Wing 1: setup but disappeared > Trump
– Wing 2: President that remained thought of themselves to reign.
– Wing 3: and when they so thought, they are awakened. Woke up the middle head.
– Verse 30: The other two heads were joined with it. Eat up the two feathers that would have reigned.
– Verse 32: The middle head put the whole earth in fear. With much oppression. It has governance over the world.
– Verse 33: after this beheld the heads in the middle appeared no more.
– Patterns: 4short patterns > each will be shorter. Three heads eat the eagle. heads go and two heads are not part of the evil kingdom. Definition of the three heads is world government
– Verse 35: head devoured the other head. (inner conflict between those in power)
– Verse 36: then I heard a voice > look before thee.
– Verse 37: roar lion chases the eagle.
– Verse 38: the lion has very special voice in front (prophet)
– Verse 40: 4 beasts that came > Daniel chapter 7. Cancan lion 2 second beasts bear e leopard with four wings.
– Eagle kingdom gets hammered by the lion.
– The lion rescues the saints of God from the eagle.
– What if 3rd Nephi Christ lion coincides with the lion of Ezekiel? 3 Nephi: 16: lion.
– The idea was presented the US might be a similar pattern with our country’s leaders as the reign of the judges in the Book of Mormon.
– Took apart the reign of judges and compare them to the term of office if the US Presidents.
– One verse identifies a min golden age of prosperity
– Very religious resigns> VP Pence?
– Prophetic olive three Jacob h 5> when the time of the gentiles begins. Unbelieving branches are wiped out and the believing gentiles will be adopted.
– Where are we when we compare our timeline with the book of Mormon? Heleman ch 2>
– That after the time of that kingdom there shall arise great striving, and it shall stand in peril of failing: nevertheless, it shall not then fall, but shall be restored again to his beginning
– My notes can be pretty confusing. I googled a video of this guy.
