I’m working on expanding certain components of a story telling event, I’ve created called Traits of a Hero. The purpose of this event is to tell several stories and then relate scientific or nature related details of the story that are important for the story success. By combining knowledge of nature and the story is my intent to show how points of knowledge in the story can be obtained by going to school.

In one story I have some kids having adventures. When crossing the ocean to America. I thought it would be nice to talk about the importance of currents in regards to how the ship would determine which currents to take to travel to the continental United States. Another good point would be to illustrate how shipmen certain types of food that will not rot during the voyage. A third idea is to touch upon the construction of a ship and why things organized on a vessel as they are.

If I can relate to these components of common sense, nature and science to storytelling, it might be a new way for children to appreciate the things they learn in school.

I have to admit, that I also want to study currents and wind patterns because I’m also working on creating a new planetary system where people travel from spot to spot on currents of air. They may travel to a version of parasail ships since many parts of the planet is very dangerous.

So I guess today’s session is simply a brainstorming session that can be used for storytelling as well as fiction.

Suggested daytime habits to address Burnout:

A couple of weeks ago I attended an online web-seminar about burn out. I took some notes and thought I’d share them. This is the next segment on the topic. This is the last entry from my notes.                                                                                                                  

–        Limit your alcohol and smoking even electronic cigarette

–        Napping can be useful. Only 20-30 min. longer time will interrupt your normal sleep pater

–        20-30 min. exercise

–        Keep a regular bed time even weekends

–        Don’t eat soon before bed 3-4 hours before bed time to help avoid acid reflex

–        If you have gird or acid reflex, sleep on the left side.

–        Avoid stressful situations before bed.

–        May need to replace your mattress every 10 years

–        Replace your pillows as they start absorbing stuff you’d rather not know about.

–        For bed sheets, higher thread count is better.

–        Have room temperature a little bit cool

–        Don’t have non-sleeping activity in your bedroom i.e.: TV

–        Maybe need soft/white noise

–        Maybe have some pretty music or pleasant sounds to listen too when sleeping

–        Maybe have a regular fan

–        Ear plugs for partners who snore

–        White noise machines is an option some sold by Mar back

–        Herbal teas

–        Listen to nooks on tape while getting ready to sleep

–        Crossword or knitting gives you mediation time.

–        Collect your mental pollution and imagine you roll into a ball and mentally throw it away

–        Mediation tapes

–        Seeking out humor and it builds endorphins. Laughter is calming

–        Avoid taking drugs

–        Sleep study may give you info if you have long term sleep issues but expensive

–        Imagine yourself doing something pleasant like working into a forest.

–        Put things in perspective. Doctor sees a good day if had one interesting patient a day.

–        Presentation on Risk/wellness page

–        Pursue DHA: dreams hopes and aspirations for career or personal life. What are those?

–        Think about how your company’s services or products help others.

–        avoid working/thinking of work even when away from work

–        Don’t have your cell phone by your bed. Depart from it.

–        Need to oil yourself like a car by taking care of yourself.

–        You need action plan to address burn out.

–        Burn out is different from depression

–        Keep yourself hydrated during intense activity and errands

–        Drink a lot of water

–        Look for things you enjoy and seek them out.

–        Find value in your tasks at work

Handling stress:

I heard a delightful object lesson today while listening to a presentation at a job searching workshop. I thought I would share it in today’s teaching embellishments blog. Usually when we think of the concept of a cup of water being half-full or half-empty that concept is used to depict one’s attitude toward life. If the Is half empty, then people may interpret life negatively. For individuals who see the cup as half-full may, they may have a more optimistic point of view of life.

In today’s object lesson, the instructor made a comparison of the cup being full and concentrated on the weight of the cup. If someone was to hold the cup for 30 seconds, it is not very heavy; but, the longer they hold back cup, the more heavy, it becomes.

 

Holding the cup for a long time can be compared to long-term stress. It is usually easy to handle stress in the short term. It becomes more difficult. The longer we have to hold the cup or in this case, the stress. When we are concerned about a topic we experience less stress when we can put the event quickly behind us. But long-term stress would be compared to holding a cup for an hour or four hours. Where we experience extreme fatigue by having to combat a challenge in the long-term, then it is desirable for us to seek ways to combat long-term stress.

When I think of ways of how I can handle stress, this is a few examples that I’ve come up with.

  1. Sometimes realizing that certain moments of stress can often be a temporary thing when viewed in the overall length of our lives. Being unemployed may only be for a couple of months versus my overall life plan of perhaps 90 years. An event that occupies a couple of months provides a high stress at the moment, but when viewed in the long-term effect, it may not have as much significance compared to maybe an illness that is permanent.
  2. Sometimes when one must experience a steady stress, then it’s advisable to find avenues to release the stress. It is an opportunity to take a break from the constant trial than seek out those opportunities. This might be the time of where maybe a certain stress might be shared with family or friends, and thus lessen the pressure on just one individual.
  3. Another option is to find sources the pleasure to help counterbalance the points of stress. If one cannot afford entertainments that usually require money, but you enjoy reading, then you might gain pleasure by going to the library and getting the books to read. Or to associate with friends and participate in activities that don’t require money.
  4. Many people have found that serving others in a moment of the own stress sometimes widens their perspective of where they may find that their life is not as difficult as other people’s lives.
  5. Sometimes the intensity of stress can be impacted by how we respond to that stress. Certain points of stress can often be preventable or lessened in intensity. An example of this might be an addiction to something such as smoking. Someone may combat their smoking habit by using nicotine patches to gradually wean them off the addiction of cigarettes.
  6. Sometimes stress can be combated by a seeking out the advice of experienced individuals who have experienced a similar trial. Those individuals who have passed similar trials may have some advice on how to better combat your trials. This also includes seeking out God’s influence and inspiration to address trials.

These are just a few ideas on how to address stress. Go ahead and do a search on the Internet for more detailed examples of stress.

A poster to match the theme:

I spent a couple of hours with a fellow CERT member on creating a poster for a fireside next Sunday. I thought we did some nice things to match the theme. Cert means Certified Emergency Response Team. The fireside next Sunday will present speakers who have been present at catastrophes and can give an idea of what to expect during an emergency.

I came up with the idea to have burn marks on the poster and she came up with the idea of Band-Aids to help with the poster that, in conjunction with actual pictures of damage to homes and land, the poster should help advertise to the importance of preparation for potential emergencies.

Getting recommendations from contacts in LinkedIn:

Tonight I received some good advice on how to build one’s credentials through LinkedIn. This can be useful for those who want to build their reputation throughout their career and promote other skill sets.

First, you can click on one of your contacts in LinkedIn. On their profile you have a button that says Send a Message.

  • Click on the drop down button and you will see an option of Recommend.
  • You can click on how you know your contact and that your recommend their services to other people. At the same time you can send a message to that person that gives specifics of why you liked what they had to offer.

 

It was recommended that you have several recommendations from the different businesses you’ve worked at.

Some other recommendations are:

1. If you don’t communicate with  certain contacts personally, don’t just suddenly come out of the blue and ask them for a recommendation. You will want to establish a relationships with them first.

2. When you’re asking for a recommendation from them you can go two ways.

a. you can reference a specific event where the two of you worked together and ask if he or she would be willing to give you a recommendation of how you achieved the task you both shared. You might event give some ideas of what was accomplished so that they don’t have to create something from scratch. This also helps you obtain specific content to the recommendation you’re asking for.

b. The alternative is to ask for a recommendation where they offer their own words of the event you reference.

Getting comments from others, in their words holds, more weight than what you say.

This would be good stuff to incorporate throughout your professional career as a professional in your field even if that includes writing and storytelling.

Influences of burnout in the work place:

  • You need basic self-care to keep yourself mentally and physically fit.
  • Good eating/exercise
  • Don’t’ slip breakfast
  • 6-8 hours’ sleep, gives time for body to heal
  • You need to train your body so that you sleep at a specific time of sleep
  • Stop drinking water early evening so that it doesn’t’ wake you up and interfere with sleep
  • Shift workers= need to create environment that can maintain sleep
  • Paler of skin can be crated from less sleep
  • Get enough sleep you can perform/concentrate better/think better
  • Acknowledge to yourself when you do something well
  • When we sleep we do consolidation.

Survive the 4th Turning:

Over a year ago I attended a presentation that talked about the cycles of history. It was one most interesting presentations, I have heard. It discussed how there is one event every 40 or 50 years that will change history. The presentation taught about how certain key events in history influence the next few decades.

One example of such an event to influence history was the attack on the twin towers on 9-11. A nation’s reactions are influenced by such an event. How we conduct our personal lives influence how we will face various challenges.

The following are some notes of how we can prepare ourselves for the turbulent changes that will be take place. As this lecture was over a year ago, I don’t have additional notes, besides those I briefly jotted down. Some of these ideas touch upon how to live our lives to face new challenges.

1. Embrace the new and now

2. Write new goals

3. Spend evenings and Sundays with family

4. Self-culture

– do what you need to do

– decide what you want to be

5. Create individuals for your life

6. Raise you children as adults.

– They need to be responsible early in their lives.

– stop coddling your kids and grandkids

7. Find meaning for the challenges in your life

Story of prisoners of Germans during World War II who were able to read their bible without the interruption from the guards. When the prisoners were later freed, they asked the guards why they never came in inspected their cells. The guards answered that the fleas in the room made it too uncomfortable for them to enter. The fleas were seen as a trial but ended up being a greater blessing.

8. Service. We, not the government, are responsible to helping others.

9. A good marriage means attention first to your partner and then your kids.

10. Initiative education = you can learn without having to go back to school.

11. Entrepreneurships & Intrpreenturship

– create a community business by yourself

– support new ideas to a local business.

12. Produce wealth = wealth will be needed to rebuild society

13. Be creative and inventive

14. Ambition:

– You naturally want good to win.

My spelling the word wrong is: vegtable.

The correct spelling should be vegetable.

Memory device might be its always nice to get vegetables on the table. Make them one, as part of the meal. Thus Get and Table combined is Ve-GETables.

We’ll see if that helps me remember that little E in the middle of the word.
