So You Think You Can Write a Memorable Character?

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Here are some notes on a great panel at Life the Universe and Everything SF/F symposium. The topic from a lecture of writing a memorable character. The presenter is by Lima Todd. She provides some excellent information and presented in a well-constructed manner. In accurate info is the result of Melva’s bad note taking.

  1. You want to make a character’s goal as noble. The goal of the book can be specific or abstract. One example of this is in the TV series walking dead. There is a couple who devoted to each other through in the fourth season and are separated from one another. So the four seasons dedicated than it back together again, and the motivations of the female character influence the actions of the group. She’s where in the hope that she can return back to the place which he thinks her companion will be.
  2. Power of suggestion. A sympathetic character: readers can relate to characters when we see that they have, to the same emotions and attitudes that we have. We want to find a part of ourselves in each character. You can achieve this through the power of suggestion. For example, by putting in details of seeing of maybe ocean waves washing against the feet are dying from a high Cliff and all the emotions and sensory details of those events can help the reader relate to the character.
  3. Sympathetic character: You’ll want to put obstacles in the way of the character to achieve their goal. The character needs in a conflict as well as the conference presented in the plot of the story. You Cantonese respond to the events in a realistic manner. For example, if they experience a car crash, not only with every the sensory details and emotions of the car crash, but they were an observer, they would have emotions after the car crash and do some form of action.React: When you show emotions or present an obstacle. You need to have the level of the character’s reaction match to the situation. You need to make effort to keep the character realistic in their behavior. The character needs to feel pain, but be careful to avoid self pitying and whining us.
  4. Be strong. Beginning characters need room to grow. That means they need to be a different individual at the end of the story, compared to who they were at the beginning. Do you know their inner conflict, beside the outside conflict of the plot? They may be afraid inside back brave on the outside. Two samples of strong characters of the still sympathetic is Harry Potter and endor Wiggins (Endor’s Game).
  • Do characters have to be good? Two well-defined bad characters are Baltor of Battle Star Galactica and Loki, the brother of Thor.
  • Note from Melva: Another bad character. I think of is Prof. Snape of Harry Potter.
  • Check out the book. Save the cat by Blake slander
  • Your character needs to care about someone or something. Think about someone who you like. Are they funny, witty, very intelligent, or the deceptive? Think of these traits and put some of those traits in your characters. They don’t have to be all nice. This’ll give us characters that would relate to
  • A complex character: You might want to give your characters quirk or two in the characters to add more dimension to the character, such as biting nails, always touching the nose, or tugging their hair. That might be something physically unique, such as a patch of white in a normally dark beard.
  • Tell show think: is bad to show a character doing something than to tell that the characters doing something. But the case will also need to think about the situation that there in. This can be illustrated by how they interact with people around them, or who they have relationships with the dialogue is a great way to show characterization.
  • Have them afraid. Characters may not always be brave, but can be scared. It’s important to have your character with imperfections and to make mistakes.
  • Growth: a character changes throughout a book. Don’t be afraid to hurt your character. It makes them change. There may be a series master arc in your book, but they will also be arcs in the different chapters and scenes. When the character undergoes a change. It should be slow and usually occurs from an external event. They might try to resist the change and to stop the event, or they might reach retreat a step and then step forward two steps. The ending event by show that the character has changed how the character reacts to a situation leads to the next event of the story. For example, in hunger games, the protagonist volunteers to be the chair, but in an effort to save her sister, but be consistent to make changes believable.
  • There are a few exceptions were characters don’t change when the story is more upon the plot when the character. Two examples are Indiana Jones and James Bond.

I went to this presentation and found the information useful.

  • Have your important papers in a ready box ready to grab and go. Maybe also have a backup of those same papers in entirely different location, maybe even in in in a different state.
  • Maybe it’s a 72 hour kit also have a week or two week kit for change of clothing that fit various scenarios such as church, weather and daily tasks.
  • Create a grab list so you know exactly what to grab for a quick exit.
  • When you receive promptings of the spirit, respond to those promptings.
  • Money: you may want to have money available to last a month away from home.
  • You might want flood / earthquake insurance.
  • Find out in your community. What they suggest for repair (for the scenarios) that fit your community.
  • Many homes were destroyed because of pressure on the Windows. The Windows are punched out and the roof tops are blown off the house and the house crumbles. That’s why it’s important to have boards on Windows
  • Buy plywood, nails, etc. even if this is for future use.
  • Leaving early from a possible bad situation is easier than leaving when the crowd leaves.
  • Have gas always in the car so that you won’t run out during your travels. Maybe always have a half a tank.
  • Arrange a hotel room for a certain set of days, maybe even a couple weeks.
  • People in the Superdome expected the government to bring in food and to take care of them. It was not available.
  • Have water indoors, not just outdoors as the water outdoors can be exposed to the elements, and compromise containers.
  • For potential floods, issues, maybe move things upstairs.
  • People were removed from the hospital and were taken care of in an emergency area. All levels of medical attention were being handled in the same spot.
  • Maggots fill the fridge where they were not able to be looked at for a long time.
  • People pile trash in their front yards for later disposal. There were also big piles of trees that had been destroyed.
  • Have a good supply of work gloves and water.
  • You need to be obedient. The presenter lost all her food supply, but because they prepared in all ways they’re able to take care of the situation and the Lord blessed them.
  • The damage at the church and other water damage made the church eventually unusable.
  • Mormon ‘helping hands’ arrived on Tuesday came and helped people from around the country.
  • All furniture was covered with mud and because of humidity they became moldy.
  • The neighborhood sought volunteers to help house medical students.
  • Lord provided everything we needed. There were miracles experienced by most people of the Ward. Everyone told stories of blessings.
  • A member of the audience suggested that an earthquake. People in California said that the three things they needed most of which Clorox, rubber gloves and trash bags.
  • Maybe prioritize levels of emergencies. Level I: The most important things. Level II: If you have the options and room, to come back and get things.
  • Another important thing that may be used is facemasks.

The Mormon codecs revisited:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

This is not the name of the panel but it is what it’s about. I recently attended a Book of Mormon evidence conference. I listened to a number of panels that gave archaeological evidence of where events occurred in Northern America that matched the events in the Book of Mormon. It was a great conference. Today’s blog is on some notes on a panel discussing

The concept that the book of Mormon population resided in Mesoamerica came from the articles listed in the Sun-Times. By Joseph Smith stated that this is that I have the way across the river from another. See DC 125:3

From September through October 1842, William Smith, Joseph, brother, publish three articles. They were anonymous. Joseph Smith in the Wentworth letter talked about the Book of Mormon events occurring in this country

  1. Filter landmass says that the events of the Book Mormon could not have covered the entire continent. The heartland area covers about 750 miles.
  2. Scriptures can’t be modified to fit theories of the book Mormon occurring in Mesoamerica.
  3. The references in the book Mormon of the river Sidon and the sea West. There is evidence that the river has changed course throughout the centuries. For example, there were some treasure hunters that were looking for a ship by the name of Arbia, which had sunk in the Mississippi River. They couldn’t find it. When it was discussed that the river has changes course in the past, they were told to go a half mile in land to where the River course used to exist. They found the ship. It was a hot one half mile away and 45 feet deep.
  4. There is evidence of past cities

There are five candidates running for three city council seats. Candidates Hans Anderson (current council member) and Claude Richards (who helped stop the Orem City property tax increase in 2013) are doingpresentations in neighborhoods around the city so citizens can learn about current issues in Orem.

How to keep your mind open to new ideas:

Here are some notes on a great panel at Life the Universe and Everything SF/F symposium. The topic is on keeping our mind open to new ideas.

  • Get adequate sleep.
  • Sometimes being stuck away from your tools of writing, gives you opportunity to plot
  • When you stuck on writing pushed through and keep writing. You may think that a particular scene is terrible, but actually when you go back. You’ll find out who is actually okay. If it isn’t a good scene you can always edit it is always easy to edit something than to edit a blank page.
  • Sometimes limited time can motivated you to write because you’re under a deadline.
  • Taking a walk in nature is often a good opportunity to brainstorm.

Ultimate health without diets:

A number of months ago I went to a series of preparation lectures. Here is one of eating right. Any inaccuracies are the fault of this note taker.

  • Eat food in the form God and nature created it
  • Drinking a can of apple juice which comes from the store contains fructose and is not absorbed in appropriate time.
  • Drink apple juice with the pulp for the fiber slows the absorption and thus is absorbed properly.
  • The problem with grain is the gluten, which is in baked bread.
  • Food that is easy to grow can be eaten higher quantities. One example of this is sugarcane. You have to work at the bar inside to get to the sugar.
  • When food is grown in certain times of the year in your area that is the time to eat that food.
  • Acquire the ability to obtain truth. This has become complicated as grocery stores containing foods from around the world that are not in season for where you live.
  • Eat by the sweat of your brow
  • Since artificial foods have been created, there is an excessive increase of cancers. God created food that required effort to harvest them, prepare them in.
  • Check out the video: sugar, the bitter truth and check out the video: chance

I am forgetting the Y in analysis. You study something means you are making an analYsis.
