Writing clearly:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

At Life the Universe and Everything symposium, there was a panel on writing clearly. In inaccuracies is the fault of the note taker.

  • They did a quote from Orson Scott card’s Endor’s game that illustrated a sample of clear and precise writing.
  • Writing is telling not showing. You write triggers that create images and impressions for your reader
  • Story is King.
  • As authors, we are told to never show but when we are telling we want to get the readers triggers.
  • Sketch out and then draft your scene. Note the details to become alive in your mind.
  • Check out JohnDBrown.com website.
  • There are five modes of writing clear net of summary. You want to have event or stimulus, then a response, and then action
  • Narrative summary: is where you briefly make reference to an activity or event without going into detail. You skim the surface.
  • Narrative detail: where you referred to the activity/event in detail blow-by-blow. External narrative is through dialogue while internal variation would be thoughts. It’s important to put narrative in sequential order.
  • Description: share with your reader to give them a clear experience of the place, person, or event. When she had a description pick one to three specific details that give a clear idea of the character you don’t have to provide seven. Movies were given establishing shot to give the viewer a sense of place by providing one or two lines introductory sentences.
  • You consult tags to the narrative by providing one or two things that define the character such as their hands in skinny a bony head.
  • When doing description do it in spatial order for example top to bottom, wide generalization to specific etc. an example might be eyes nose mouth. Or for general landscape that might give a general saying that then narrows to attend cup

CERT basic training final exam B:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

In the aftermath of a magnitude 7.7 earthquake even showed your safety and your family safety, and you grab your CERT kit and PPE. As you make your way to your CERT establish meeting point, you come across a woman lying by the side of the road you call out your name and affiliation and ask are you okay? There is no response.

  1. Assess for airway, bleeding, and signs of shock.

You move closer to the victim. Once again, you ask, “can you hear me? Are you okay? As you approach, you hear a very faint “help me,” and now that you are closer, you notice that the victim is bleeding heavily from a laceration on her thigh. Immediately attempt to call 911 on your cell phone but the system is down.

  1. You know the woman is seriously injured. How do you help her? Assess the three killers systematically, starting with the airway
  2. You notice that the blood is spurting from the laceration on the victim’s inner thigh. What type of bleeding is this? capillary
  3. What we do we to stop the bleeding? Applied tourniquet

After a few moments, the bleeding slows considerably. You ask the woman, “are you okay? Squeeze my hand if you can hear me.” She is only able to groan unintelligibly in response. You knows of her fingers are cold – despite soaring temperatures – she tries to squeeze your hand.

  1. The signs and symptoms that you witness tell you that this woman is suffering from what? Shock due to the inadequate blood flow.
  2. How would you treat the woman based on your findings? Ask her to hold the dressing in place while you search for help
  3. If asked to triage the woman, how would you tag her? With the tag signifying immediate.

Boy, I have forgotten a lot I don’t know which of these answers are correct. It sounds like I need to get back to the books.

Monologues:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

At Life the Universe and Everything symposium, there was a panel on Monologues.

  • Internal monologue is when the characters try to convince himself or herself on something. External monologue is with a try to persuade somebody else.
  • If an author is uncertain how the character discuss uncertainty internally
  • If character is by their self for long periods of time watch the character talking to self and not be boring.
  • In storytelling you want to watch audience to see when they begin to check out. This might be a time you need to modify your story for pacing
  • Beta readers you could asked him to do a big be disabled a circuit board
  • Pacing, do internal dialogue after a lot of action. It may start his dialogue then move over to the character’s thoughts.
  • Make sure that internal dialogue has the proper trigger to match the thoughts for the internal dialogue.
  • In movie scripts, the reader will flip through the manuscript backwards to look for white space, to see if the script is evenly balanced between dialogue and text. To see if it looks balanced.
  • Be careful of talking heads.
  • Young readers have a lot of white space. White space is created by doing a pause. It lets you take a breath in the story
  • The comedian Jim Gaffigan will actually add humor by creating a pretend audience that acts offended to his comments.
  • A character whose uncertain or insecure may display that trait by halted speech. While a character who is confident and bold may not speak confidently and distinctly. Soldiers and stress may have their dialogue as abrupt and interrupted.
  • For middle grade fiction not only does your dialogue need to be in a middle grade voice but variation as well.
  • Monologue may illustrate a change of opinion. It was not change information that assists an information dump. It might be an opportunity of finding an answer.
  • Make sure there is a reason – stimulus for character to speak in a monologue.
  • Look for multiple times of providing different scenes and landscapes settings mix at the location.
  • Make sure the monologue belongs where it exists. Read your book out loud in the character’s voice reading your books out loud can catch a lot of problems

Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker. I may have mixed a bit of a talk into my class notes. I’m not certain.

Campaign  speech by Evan McMullin:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I attend a campaign speech by this guy. I like him. Here are my notes. Any inaccurate or misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

  • Invited us to get involved. We need hands and minds and hearts of many
  • He gave a little of his life: His ancestors from Ireland who moved to the US and settled in Mass for religious liberty. They later moved to Utah for the same purpose. Even was born in Provo. His parents met at BYU. They later moved to WA State.
  • As an adult, he was hired by CIA. He went undercover in the Middle East and other countries to disrupt malicious plans. In the CIA, he learned what role the US played in the world. Then 911 happened.
  • He worked for Golden Sacks and worked with small and large sized companies. He learned how they succeed.
  • He became the chief policy director for republican’s party. Learned what kinds of reforms are needed. Learned about national security plus a number of other things.
  • He saw Trump attack people and values. He tried to talk others into running. They wouldn’t. They asked me to run. He is.
  • We need to build a new conservative movement.
  • What does the new generations of American leadership look like? They recommit themselves to the cause of liberty, so we can pursue happiness. Align to the principle that we are all created equal. We must have the realization that liberty comes with diversity. Diversity represents different skin colors and accents.
  • When he saw Trump ridicule others Evan knew he is not a true conservative.
  • Why is the country special? We are in a land that is choice above all others. Any people on this land had a tremendous opportunity to be the most powerful and prosperous nation on earth. We have natural resources, two big oceans on each side and two friendly neighbors.
  • We are a light to the rest of the world. Others in other countries want the American dream. Goodwill comes from other countries when we lead with good ideals.
  • When we see leaders attack our ideals we must reject them. The country has suffered from a leadership that has been subpar of some time. 82% feels country on wrong track survey done after the national conventions.
  • Americans feel they are not being heard any more. Washington is not accountable.
  • Burorcrates create laws and regulations by themselves.
  • Congress passes laws where big companies prosper and small businesses suffer.
  • National debt 19 billion
  • 15 % or about 15 million live below the poverty line. United States Leaderships has been withdrawn from the world.
  • Military using 1980 equipment. They have to borrow parts from museums.
  • We have lowered our standards for leaders and as a result we have gotten worse leaders.
  • We’ve abandoned our core ideals.
  • We need to make some changes. Our country has enormous potential. What must we do? Transfer power from federal government to the states. 330 million people in different states want to govern differently. They need to follow the constitution. Power in DC divides us. If power was defused then individual groups could govern themselves. Must restore legleative power back to congress and away from executive.
  • We must not shut ourselves from the world. Big government caters to private interests. We need regulations to keep us healthy but we don’t need red tape to get in the way of emperors.
  • National debt: We need to reform entitlements. We can do that and keep our commitments to those who are retired. Gradually insert changes.
  • Poverty programs are designed to survive poverty. We need programs that will exit poverty.
  • Education: empower parent so they have more say in the curriculum and where their kids study. Need to readdress how education institutions are accredited. Need to do something about student loans. Align the interests’ of the university to students. University needs to have skin in the game on loans. That will improve the quality of education and cost lower.
  • Need to recommit ourselves to our core ideals. We are created equal. Have a right to the pursuit of happy-ness. We need to return to the constitution. Our constitution is only as good as our leaders have respect for it.
  • We must choose leaders who are honest and wise. Will put the interests of citizens first and lead with integrity. We can only get it through a new era of civic engagement. It will be us who will create what we are talking about. You are here. You are engaging.
  • Principles for new American leadership: they are not exhaustive or complete. These principles are used to start a conversation in America. Time for a national conversation on these ideals. We need conversations with each other, family, friends and colleagues. Raise our gaze and see how we can advance a new conservative movement.
  • Hashtag: Let’s talk principles.
  • Need to have a national ideology not driven by Hillary or trump.
