Propaganda: Moving the public.

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I found this to be an interesting panel at LTUE. They have some excellent panels there.  Any inaccurate information is the fault of the note taker.

  • Propaganda: any media that has the goal of getting the recipient to act in a certain way. You could show businesses positively or negatively by such things as anti-smoking commercials.
  • Book, 1984, highlights the propaganda.
  • How propaganda is different from ads: pro: wants to you have a certain worldview or an action.
  • 2016 elections had both sides with a lot of propaganda on both sides.
  • Propaganda techniques: 3 types
  1. Pathos: appeals to feelings. One ad, against the policies of a President, has a little girl playing in daises, and then the screen goes white with a blast of a nuclear bomb
  2. Logos: appeal to logic. See an add ‘buy this item, because they break down of features and to save money. Not a strong form of persuasion. Most of our decision comes. Presidents chose by who is most likeable. Usually more emotional is better.
  3. Ethos: is like endorsements by celebrities. Ads based on who someone is.
  • As people become bigger, others want to be like them.
  • Propaganda as a tool: will often have a bad character that had the wrong attitude.
  • Book: state of fear, Michael Crownton. Talks about global warming.
  • Propaganda can be used to control people: Brandon poll: A World Without Heroes: Beyonders, book. In book, Paredes for heroes, characters promote their Point of View.
  • Propaganda creates an ‘other’ history to hate such as in history: the Huns. They become the target to fight against. Mormons have horns. Movie: trapped by the Mormon.
  • Studies have shown that people don’t feel it affects them. But they believe it will affect their neighbor so they will respond to it.
  • People will hear something, forgot the source but will still believe it.
  • Book: Switch how to make change when change is hard. When you make it easy to take actions they will do it. Put food outside door got more food then bring to community center.
  • Politicians will associate themselves with images like flag, or eagles to associate with American way.
  • Movie: wag the dog.
  • To share a message in a movie has it in the past or future so people will not feel threatened by the message being current.
  • Overt Propaganda relies upon felicities of thought. Ie: Economy downturn is the Jew’s fault.
  • Because the man is labeled as bad that means anything he says is bad.
  • Book: thinking fast or slow. People are happier when they are around people who feel the same way.
  • Book: made to stick, how to create a message that people will remember and may act on. Story is a great example. Wag the dog was where a created a story. Soldier put in morose code on seater. Hi mom I’m ok.
  • There was a Rumer that McDonalds used worms in their meat. Publicist says how much does worm meat cost. Found cost and sent out message worm meat is too expensive. And the rumor dropped.
  • Make your message emotional, concrete and tell stories.
  • A lot of Propaganda has a face to it. Big brother in 1894. It creates the ethos.
  • Celebrities will have people come up and talk to them as if they know them.
  • Three fingers and crossed pinky and thumb will put you in prison in North Korea because the symbol from hunger game is a sign of resistance.
  • The book, The Circle, soon to be a movie is about a society that shows that personal privacy is bad.
  • Hitler killed all opposing views. The other is here is a thought and this is why it is wrong. Marginize them.
  • Book: Revolt in 2100
  • There’s a rule that an argument can only go so longer before one calls the other a Nazi.
  • Propaganda highlights only one part of the truth.
  • 90 % truth and 10% that is not and they’ll believe it.

Do you have something to add? If yes, please do so in the comment section of this blog.

Thanks

Revelation:

Sheri Dew, a former RS president of the LDS church gave a fireside. Here are my notes. Any misinformation or inaccuracies are the fault of the note taker.

  • She was the first church official to go to Siberia. Everything there was grey but the spirit was powerful. During the meeting, the wife of mission president said in English “very Holy Ghost”
  • God will communicate with the spirit what you ask.
  • We would be stuck in life and unable to accomplish our missions on earth without the savior. So who will we turn to when we are stuck? When we have a weakness we can’t overcome or feel lonely or other issues who can we turn to when we feel stuck. If we can have a burning conviction that Jesus is the Christ. He can help us deal with things we can deal on our own. Our only chance of not being stuck in our life is through God and Christ.
  • Much of the miraculous help from the gospel are gifts from God: Elder Holland.
  • Preach my gospel: all that is unfair about life can be made right through the atonement through Jesus Christ.
  • We each have a divine origin that has been put into place long ago. We‘ve been sent to be a part of certain people’s lives.
  • She watched 93% of the solar eclipse and 7% realized it still provides the light on earth. Amazing light but the light of Christ is even more powerful.
  • We live at a time when gospel called evil and evil is called good.
  • People are observing the light of Christ, but there are enough followers who can share the light. Or can reflect the light of Christ.
  • No one can gauge the power of women who live the gospel of Jesus Christ.
  • A devote Methodist woman was given a ticket to the woman’s conference and she made for observations that stood out. 1. Everyone is so friendly. They made me feel so welcome. 2. Every woman is in a dress. The Methodist asked the woman next to her why. The other’s response, we want to show that we are respectful. 3. I like that they quote scriptures. 4. They all said witnessed what they know to be true. She liked how the women witnessed things you do that they can speak with confidence in what we know to be true. She asked how you know? the response, we’ve learned to recognize the spirit.
  • Imagine what can be accomplished with women who have witnessed the spirit of Jesus Christ. Imagine the level of influence we could have.
  • Be more articulate and be willing to speak on what you know.
  • Learn to repair the breaches in your life.
  • Gordon B Hinckley told conference members he was asked to be interview by Mike Wallice for 60 minutes. He thought, Lean into the stiff window of opportunity rather than hunker down and do nothing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAosHXQWyuU ; https://overcast.fm/+CDc3dhvss
  • Questions are good, 14 yr. old question to God began the restoration of the church in modern days. We all have tons of questions. Are we willing to engage in the lifelong wrestle of question we have? Through our live God will enlighten our minds.
  • 1 Nephi 11-14 vision of the modern day. See rod of iron.
  • Nothing pleases God more than for us to ask him questions and for him to answer.
  • Russel Nelson: (a doctor) was given the assignment by the twelve open up all countries of Eastern Europe. He wondered, why me? He made multiple appointments with leaders in different countries. People who had appointments would cancel them. Some places police would follow him. By the time the Berlin wall fell. There were for preaching the gospel. Sister Do asked what did you learn? He said: The lord likes effort.
  • If we are willing to engage in a wrestle and find out what Christ’s atonement means to us and the foundation thing like is Joseph Smith is a prophet. Then all the questions we have to give us opportunities to grow.
  • If we have had a witness of the spirit about different topics then I know the gospel is true and we have a testimony.
  • Questions are an opportunity to grow and we can gain a stronger testimony of the gospel and to gain revelation.
  • I don’t have all my answers to questions answered but I have confidence that they will be answered.
  • Holland’s talks often speak of angels. Once he had a talk about lust, ask for angels to help you. God has used angels as an emissary to show love. Usually, they are not seen. Joseph f Smith: one of the greatest assignments is to administer to us as angels. We can ask for angels to help us to help us with different challenges or to help family members who are struggling. We can plea for angels to help us in our challenges
  • Grace is Godly power.
  • Our weakness can be turned into strength s through the power of the atonement of Jesus Christ.
  • We can be healed through the atonement of Christ.
  • Everything flows from Christ. He is the enteral healer. He can healer us from decades of pain, sin,
  • We can resist temptation and forgive others who have hurt us.
  • We can become the best version of ourselves.

Red flag panel on contracts:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I don’t recall if these are notes from attending Wester con or from LTUE. Anyway, here is info about publishers and contracts.

  • Small press: You may not get an advance in small press, don’t get royalty until you earn out your print run.
  • Small press: want you to pay for your cover or pay for a copy editor. If they want money, they are a vanity press.
  • Put your book out in eBook only: If they are getting a cut then you should self-publish. EBooks never go out of print. Did they get rights to publish forever? Might provide marketing, if not, it may be worth it.
  • The publisher only use print on demand. A publisher takes a chunk and tangles you with marketing. Books have to stay in the store. Unsold books will go back to the publisher.
  • Books go out of finish or author not finish a series = Look at the pattern of such book treatment from the publisher.
  • Tell me about your social marketing platform: the publisher sees the importance to work with you on your platform as part of their marketing. You will want to check to see if they plan to help you on marketing or if they expect you to do it all. If your publisher does not give you a marketing plan. They want to see if you will be a positive light as part of their company.
  • Does your social presence match with your book? See if the marketing plan is part of the contract.
  • One thing that will sell your work will be your next book. If you spend all your time on marketing you have less time to write.
  • Does your contract have a marketing plan/ budget? A big publisher will not guarantee a lot of money. Divide up responsibly and have it in writing.
  • Have someone else look at the contract.
  • In a multi-book deal, a publisher wants you to only give them one book a yr. make sure have an advance, and if table does not get published the rights get returned. If in contact there is also exclusivity piece and can’t print anything else> is a red flag. You need to make sure it refers to ‘this series’ this character.
  • A contract has a noncompeting clause: shows they have an invested interest in our work. Look for anything to limit our ability to continue publishing. If they have the first right of approval, it must have a time clause in it.
  • The right of approval of future work can cause a problem of all future work. It can include anything in my medium. So red flag.
  • Your contract does not have a sunset clause. Means that rights never return back to the author. EBooks never got out of print.
  • A contract gives away the rights of script or audio to the publisher. The chances you might never have those chances but maybe if you wanted to? You can’t do anything to your material. Publishers could hoard branches of your world. There should be a clause for your audiobooks.
  • It is always in your best interest to pay an attorney up front to review a contract. Agents do not know legal terms but they have looked at a lot of contracts. Need an attorney who specializes in book deal attorney. Need to have experience with a literary agent. Maybe discuss with an agent if they have access to an attorney.
  • Have to sell 5 k books in the first week. Small presses like to throw around industry standard. Look at industry markets by their category as each has traits. Publishers will want you to take responsibility for their failures.
  • We have a price point> is the cost of a book. May need to be agreed on if they put it up too high.
  • You might want to hold back audiobooks rights by first seeing how they handle current tasks.
  • Publishers who are not willing to negotiate> is a red flag. Whenever negotiate your contract. You know they do not have your best interests in mind. If they don’t budge> red flag.
  • Small publisher taught an author the industry. The small press needs to make money so want you to succeed.

Forgiveness between a couple:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

There are notes taken for this week’s marriage and relations class. Any inaccuracies is the fault of the note taker.

  • Forgiveness could be considered looking at the value of someone else over their shortcomings. Accept them in spite of their shortcomings.
  • when someone forgives another they feel at peace and lighten the weight of grudge in my heart
  • Gordon B Hinkly: forgiveness is the greatest virtue. …
  • Pride can get in the way of forgiveness.
  • If we come to talk about an issue to each other and not let the resentment build, it works better.
  • Matt 6:14-15 forgive your trespasses and the father will forgive yours.
  • In most cases, we are married for a short time before we offend our spouse. To develop a solid marriage we need to address conflict and ask for forgiveness.
  • To be effective in apologies, they must be sincere and heartfelt.
  • Many times contention in families is due to people not willing to apologize for something they did.
  • A good apology is to also state the things that you did that was the cause behind the apology.
  • In communication, the spouse needs to tell their partner of why they felt bad to help their partner understand them.
  • Sometimes people are willing to forgiveness once they have a chance to retaliate against the hurt they gave. Maybe giving a partner the silent treatment a bit aft the apology.
  • Sometimes the hurt partner needs to feel that their partner knows that they are truly sorry. Maybe provide an act to compensate.
  • Hurt feelings don’t just go away; sometimes it takes an act of the atonement to truly cleanse the hurt.
  • Longtime guilt that can last for years also needs the atonement to cleanse.
  • When tempted to give a partner the silent treatment, just tell them lets come back a little later. I’m not ready to talk yet. That way the partner knows you are not ignoring them.
  • The silent treatment can make the partner feel helpless.

How to get followers on Social media Part two:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Here is a continuation of my notes from a life the universe and everything panel. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

  • One thing that had huge success is events and parties. Have an online party. A group on author’s think tank. You can contact fellow authors and say you need some prizes for a party. You may get eBooks from authors that they will give away. When do the events, provide prizes that match what you’re known for. To win this prize (show a picture of the prize) you need to like their author page, follow them and find ways to promote that person. The bigger the prize the more tasks they need to do.
  • You can have a party last an hour, several hours. For tasks have them do fun things such as to write a caption for a funny photo.
  • At a party can have another author take over. For the day the author will run a party for the hour. The most successful party was a week-long party. Did two games a day.
  • Some games can create a caption, find a picture of somebody who was old who is old but loving live. And they can post it. The YA scavenger hunt.
  • Raffle copter: those are where you go to raffelcopter.com set up prizes. The gibber prize you give away, the more response. They will have tasks to follow you on Facebook follow me on watt pod. They can choose which tasks they do and they get an entry. Some tasks are required or just let them choose. Make a tweet or retreat and come back and report. Have a link to show what they done. You can put the htmp code for raffle copters. https://www.rafflecopter.com/?home&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=rafflecopter&utm_campaign=adwords&gclid=CNXOj9DqrtMCFQ2ffgodUQ8FGQ
  • You want to cross blogger you want to share on Facebook and tweet to drive people to the different media sites.
  • You can have author friends you can share their blogs. Click on htmp and give them the code/link so they can clock on it.
  • Google plus: Its growing. Do a google plus community.
  • Do a hang out: can do a chat session with readers. 10 people can be on it.
  • Survey your fans and see what social media they are on as those may be the ones you want to concentrate on.
  • Pinterest: fastest growing website of grown membership. People, who respond to pins, spend twice the amount of money than other media.
  • Pinterest creates more viral pins than twitter create viral tweets.
  • Want to pin? (Download Pinterest app)
  • You can create a board by topics.
  • Once you’ve pinned to a board it stays there, forever unless they delete it.
  • You can add original content, or repin other people’s pin (from author’s friends)
  • You can follow people on Pinterest. Want to follow your friends.
  • You want to create something visually appealing that will draw people’s attention.
  • You can have pictures of people that look like characters in your book.
  • You can make a private board that can be a good research source.
  • Stay away from anything controversial like politics etc. Don’t want to annihilate anyone from your books. Therese plenty of common ground.
  • When you publish a book, prepare yourself you will get a bad review. Don’t respond to the review. It can attract trolls to your response.
  • Instant gram: becoming more popular among older women and YA.
