How to Work a Network

This was a presentation by Shonaleigh at Life, the Universe, and Everything writing conferences. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

– The personal story of Gary Kurtz was visiting BYU. As a college kid, the presenter saw him. He was going to the wrong place. He had the opportunity to help that person. But was too shy to do so. Hurts never showed up for his presentation. He the host help, that can endure them to you.
– Research and see what their interest is. you can ask questions about their interest.
– At a conference, you already have a similar interest (the con purposed) that you share with strangers.
– Avoid having something negative is said or to learn something. You can approach someone and just ask a simple question and have a nice conversation. You can ask good neutral questions.
– Ask the agent personal questions i.e.: Q: How did you get involved in the SF/F community? Or Q: who is your favorite author or movie?
– Those who are successful always want to have an additional fan. If you can present someone to be helpful to them.
– Book: the war of art by Steve Pressy. Get it.
– If you want to meet someone see what panels they are going to be on or event.
– Some can approach their spouse and they may be the ones to introduce you.
– You can ask some of your social questions to your friends.
– He always acts excited when I meet someone and I pay keen attention so they know what they are doing is exciting.
– An alternative motivate is easily recognized.
– Don’t share your opinion until they have their opinion.
– Find out something new in their field because that will show your knowledge.
– Will often ask: which parts of creation do you like most? When you get the original idea or when you do the last step of creating. One artist told him the work was never finished.
– You can go to an event you might ask them do you know the presenter.
– Find out things that you have in common. Check my website or social media. Shows what they’re posting about or responding to.
