What can we do for our field as writers?

These are the notes from a main address By Jo Walton (English author)   at LTUE (writer’s conference of life the universe and everything) in 2018.

Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

We already read widely in our genera. We can also read widely outside our general classics from our and other cultures.

  • Book: to light the lightning.
  • Does not like that every book has to have an adventure and be cool.
  • There are certain things we can do better than another genre because we can talk about human nature and a relationship to alien nature or fairy nature. We can look at human nature at a more unique perspective.
  • Sighting by C. J. Cherryh is about cloning.
  • Book: The Dispossessed.
  • Book: Ice hinge
  • Book: Octavia Butler presents complex books.
  • Book: Wilson’s spin.
  • Book: Black wine
  • Book: the coffin makers
  • Book: by Bujold called meridance
  • Sf is the genera of ideas.
  • Our genera can take big ideas and contrast
  • Book: Air by Jeff Rymand.
  • Talk about great stories about human nature needs to have great characters.
  • Want to not have adventure books but more books on exploring new concepts. Where the plot where the way the ideas change.
  • Stars in my pocket,
  • Ideas change and the characters change.
