Here is more great writing advice from Life, the Universe, and Everything. The theme of the presentation is about how Comic suggestions.

  • Audiobooks will be having videos and soundtracks as they develop.
  • With Covers, don’t limit yourself to stay in the squares. And seems to be jumping out of the page but art goes beyond the border of the scene.
  • When you lay out a comic page you need to decide that the whole area needs to get more attention. When there is a transformation taking place all the pages will look similar so as to not confuse your viewer/reader.
  • Limit yourself to three dialog bubbles per panel.
  • As you lay out your story and next page is a two-page spread are often a big reveal.
  • You can take up more space with important dialog that is a cliffhanger
  • It is good to have a cliffhanger at the end of each page to keep them reading.
  • Different between thought and dialog bottles. Thoughts can clue the reader on what is doing on or can provide world building.
  • Maps can help you know how long it takes to go from point A to point B.
  • Before you start to illustrate you need to draw detailed costume makeup and have it all defined so that the comic stays consistent. This involves character design:
  • Cost may influence you to provide a balk and white comic over color.
  • The first panel on the first page of a comic the scene is an establishment shot of the new location.
  • Character concept> you can define aspects of the character.
  • Generally, comics were limited to 23 pages but digital comics are currently 22 pgs.
  • Comic series will have their own standalone story in the issues and then the overall story/series has a main plot.
  • Will take a script, authors will try to put action and reaction on the same page but usually, the reactions needs to be the next panel.
  • Thumbnails can let you plan out the book/panels.
  • An establishment shot will be a bunch of people talking. Reviewers don’t want to follow people talking. Can keep better interest by providing a variety of view from a viewpoint of view or a view. One shot might be a bug climbing up a table leg. Different angels help.
  • ‘Jump the shark’ first happened on the TV show Happy Days with the Fones jumping the shark. It was so bad that it didn’t help the series. Jumping the shark is usually a desperate action to improve ratings.
  • End a comic with a cliffhanger and start with a hook of the next issue. Both. The hook is showing an overall view of battle is one angle.
  • Need to leave space on the page for thoughts or dialog bubbles.
  • Spot illustration is a single image with white in the background.
  • Usually, do 3-5 shots a page.
  • Conflict and suspense really drive a good story.
  • Also known as the inciting citizen and how do I support the conflict in the layout of the page.
  • As you introduce a new character you need to do a scene that we get to know each new character’s personality.
  • 4 to 5 panels now becoming more common over 7.
