Out of the blue while I was practicing story telling for my performance tomorrow I got connected to a conference call hosted by Gov. candidate Jonathan Johnson. I like that Mile Lee does this. I think it’s a smart move for Johnson to do so as well.

The other thing I liked was they got feedback on different topics by pushing a button on the phone to vote. Talk about immediate feedback.

Any inaccurate info displayed below is the fault of the note taker.

Here are some of the comments made during the broadcast.

Utah water:

  • Price water at its actual cost and not give it subsidies.
  • Promote conservation efforts.
  • Find new ways to capture the water more efficiently.
  • We send more water down river than we are contracted for to CA.
  • We send the extra water do it for free. NV state charges.

Common core:

  • Did it for a promise for federal funds.
  • We lost two ways.
  • We didn’t get the federal money.
  • We got stuck with common core.
  • Wants our state board to bring up a variety of standards that schools districts and parents can select options.
  • 10% of funds spent at state dept.
  • One superintendent said 65% of his budget made it to classroom that means 35% didn’t
  • A lot of money spent on the sage test. Sage not used for grading or teaching. Teachers don’t know what’s in it. It only does data mining.
  • Like a choice in school options. Make it easier to personalize children’s education.

Transfer of public lands for Utah.

  • 30,000 acers controlled by managed lands (Not sure if I heard this fact correctly).
  • Access to land for the public is decreased to state and county residents.
  • Schools in Garfield don’t have access to funds or access to lands that would provide funding. People have to move.
  • Beetle bug infestation.
  • Sue federal government.
  • Governor wants to be moderate in tone = so no action has been done against federal lands.

Transportation:

  • 80% paid by tax payers.
  • Feel that the board should be elected if we fund most of transportation.
  • Board should operate in a transparent way.
  • Trenched politicians are selecting people who are not made accountable.
  • Want to start term limits and have the governor serve term limits.
  • Past governors passed a bunch of bills without reading them, so they don’t know what’s in them.
  • Legislature passed about 500 bills. Want to cut that number down. Feels some should be vetoed. 100 of them were where educations are being told what to do.
  • Changes should not reign down from the state.

Coal industry:

  • Want to find ways to sell our clean coal to countries that are using dirty coal.

Contact info on the candidate:

  • com web site.
  • Ph: 801-892-0401
  • Johnathan Johnson face book page. You’re encouraged to share it.
