Plot development:

I came across some typed up notes from a previous session of life universe and everything panel.

Here are the notes on writing about plot development:

  • Plot and character are really inseparable in a good story
  • Plot developments don’t have to be linear. It constantly evolves as it develops.
  • Vibrant characters that the audience cares about in a situation he could not possibly prepare for.
  • Craft (used intentionally) will flesh out the plot
  • The potential for failure causes tension in the reader.

The list is short so here are some additional ides.

  • In case one may not be fully engaged in the main plot I liked to have a b and sometimes a c plot. That way the reader may find interest in one of the others or they may be interested in the resolutions of multiple plots simultaneously.
  • Some good advice I’ve heard is that people will color code an outline to see how long it has been for each plot segment (or character) has been used.
  • I’ve also heard some great counsel that something needs to be accomplished in each individual scene.
  • The opening of the book/story needs to in some way relate to the ending of the story.
