Orem city council Meet the candidates, 2019

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Orem city is replacing 3 new city councilmen/women. I went to the meet candidates’ night and here are the notes I took. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker. This is a submission to my caucus corner occasional blog.

Mickey W. Cochran seminary teacher, love Orem, own business, taught at BYU, neighborhood planning, planning commission volunteer work. State street core project, planning has to be well planned, not accept any donations, earn a position because of my involvement, and will not be owned. I am Orem everyman. preserve neighborhoods.

Debby Lauret: tonight is being streamed. Been on the city council for the last 4 years, preserving Orem for my family 4 yrs. on counsel, strong neighborhood, preserve and protect state and clean family, developed low-density housing, future land for north union trail. Protect safety in school. Community gardens, work at tabathy pantry, advocate affordable housing, growth needs to be done in the right places. Strong public property. Strong police and fire force, lot more police. Career better options, a new fire station. Strong economic development. We are business-friendly. Spent decades as economic development worked on dobi project. Helped 200 businesses. Increasing rainy day funds. Stabilize our revenues, new playgrounds, and a new library.

Jeffrey K. Lambson: thanks to current counsel, first responders. Make their well-being a top priority, lived life in Orem. Care submission, 3 things bring joy god family and service. Granet publishing and. high-density housing, master plan emergency. No zoning

Sam Lentz: Not happy with the past council, utopia was a political landmine, incumbent, build-out plan all have access to utopia with no new taxes, proposed a property tax increase, hire new police officers. only voted for one apartment.

Martin Wright: Orem 19 yrs., here are issues that need to be addressed. We pay the lowest tax rate in the country. We need to take care of the community, not all can be given we need to earn it. Need to keep it family-friendly.

Tommy Williams: lived in Orem most of my life, tell me what needs to be done. See the frustration people feel they are not being heard, the decision is already made. Spending within our current budget. As a businessman must live in a budget, many officers feel they are being overburdened. As sales tax revenue > redirect funds to police and fire. Preserve our neighborhoods; make sure we are not overburdening our roads. Tommy wiliams@usa.com > no high-density apartments.

Spencer Rands family-friendly. Bad traffic through small neighborhoods. Tearing down neighborhoods. Not make a decision in advance

David Halliday: listen Dave Ramsey could not find any home for 25% salary of 700. A serious issue with affordable housing, father of Mitt Romney in charge of housing. We can ??? high density or we can have it work for us. Have responsible and responsible housing development. : civil engineering. Grow city responsibility. Pet peeve> don’t like how voting by rank choice. rank choice. Want candidates listed by most popular.

Terry D. Peterson: I hear you. Now clients can park in his business, leaving Orem not put high-density housing in neighborhoods. A concern with an increased water bill. Background graded from BYU in finance, understanding analyzing companies, don’t have any agenda, concern about the direction things are going. concerns high density.

David G. Przybyla: engineers arranged for a long road, worried about materials we are using for the longevity for Orem, avoid Center Street. Need to focus on traffic. Maximize tax dollars or not using them. Need some innovative solutions for Orem challenges. 1. Attract business to Orem. 2 improve congestions. 3. Physically responsive.

Nichelle Jensen: passion is into where I am and being a part of my community, unity is something very important to me. Value all members of the community. Other passions, making sore do the best what I’ve been given so best life possible. Decrease our carbon footprint. Favorite thing in Orem that we have liver within 15 min trail or grocery store. slow growth, have a business make improvements themselves

Orem Facebook page.

Difference between Role and Roll

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Role: a character played by an actor
Roll: is making an object turn in a circle

The word, role, has all different letters and thus all different characters of a story.
Something repeating in a circle multiple times is rolling just like the letter l repeats.

Do you have a better idea of how to know which is which? If so please share.

Reasons your Picture Book may be rejected, part one

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I attended an online webinar from called picture book summit. They provided four reasons picture books get rejected. I will list the notes below. Any inaccuracies are the fault of the note taker.

Unoriginal ideas By Katie Davis

– Due to submitting an unoriginal idea.
– Key phrases to warn you the story feels familiar, it’s too similar. Does not feel fresh. I get a lot of submissions on this topic.
– What does the predictable look like? The agent/ edit can predict where the story is going.
– Taken a to4y line and just altered a little
– The story is very message-driven. For example, some character has a different trait that is used later to save the day.
– Limit character development by providing some stock traits. i.e.: all characters are spunky, boys who like sciences that are bad at dancing.
– You need to developed your manuscripts to devote your reader
– Authors are being impatient or lazy.
– What does an original idea look like?
– – Using the first idea you come up with.
– – The story using a theme rather than a plot
– Reading other books that may follow your idea.
– It’s important to read the most recent picture books.
– Not spending enough time with your characters to find their surprises. What if the bunny is a bully rather than soft and gentle.
– Reading books that have been done give you an idea of what is new.
– The words ‘I can’t’ will kill an original idea. The words ‘Why not’ can give a book potential
– Not everyone will like your idea.
– You need to first please yourself.

If you have additional recommendations, feel free to add them in the comment section of this blog.

How to get the most out of Toastmasters

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

What do you want to get out of speaking?

Why do you want it? Finally, what is standing in the way of getting it?

Five years ago Jeff wanted more and was looking for a platform to learn how to speak in public. He went to a Toastmaster meeting and participated in Table Topics. Even though he had spoken previously, he found himself nervous. He was stiff as a board and Frank Lewis told him that he had to loosen up. He joined Toastmasters. (Asked audience to hold out hands with alternating thumbs up and finger-pointing and then had them switch hand gestures repeated).

Toastmasters takes you from the Ice Breaker to more advanced speeches.

Jeff ended up joining 5 clubs. He signed up to speak at all of the clubs. He found that the more that he did it, the easier it became. If we are tough on ourselves, the tough things become easier.
There are several contests that you can participate in to advance your speaking skills. The first time he competed, he got lucky because the person that was supposed to go couldn’t go and as the second-place contestant. He took it seriously and decided to speak at every opportunity and location he could — even the Toastmasters clubs that he didn’t belong to.

He went to the area contest. He won the area contest, the division contest. When he was in high school, his nickname was “Stone Face.” When he went to District he decided to look up the people that he would be competing against. He saw that he was going to be competing against Bryant Ferguson, the third-ranked speaker in the world at that time. He was so psyched out that he thought he wouldn’t have any friends. He learned that the more he went to competitions, the more enjoyable it was.

So, ask yourself, “What do you want out of speaking?” You can have anything you want in public speaking if you want because everybody is in it for the same reason.

Alaskan cruise suggestions four

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I’m taking a cruise and did a search for suggestions. Here are things I learned. This is the last blog on this subject. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

These notes are onshore excursions:

A lightweight, fold-up backpack or day-pack
always carry your passport, ID, boarding pass, credit card, and money – and always use those places as to not lose and/or have to spend time hunting for important stuff
Always walk off the ship when in any port you visit
Always wear walking shoes when in port
American dollars are widely accepted in cruise ports
an Alaska cruise is all about where you visit and the onboard experience can almost become an afterthought
appropriate footwear for what you’re doing
Ask guest relations for a port map to get the scoop on where everything is once you get off the ship.
Be Sure to Taste the Local Flavor
Bear logo or Hand logo or tour times made by locals
Book tours in advance
Bring a Digital Camera (and Binoculars
Bring a variety of clothes for a change of clothes.
Budget extra money for shore excursions.
Day-time activewear
Don’t go early to gangway early for an excursion. Wait for the message of gangway open
Don’t overdo excursions so you cannot add stress
Exercise wear for a workout on the ship
Hope on and hope off busses inexpensive way to see.
It rains a lot
It Will Rain During Your Cruise
Make a copy of your passport to carry instead of the real thing
most cruise lines will offer a variety of onboard talks and lectures that provide valuable information about the history, culture, and wildlife of the ports of call
Ports are not guaranteed
The ship will wait for excursions hosted by ship if they are late.
Snag snacks from the buffet to take with you
Temperatures can change considerably from one destination to the next, and even on otherwise warm days
towns are not huge can walk them rather than bus tours
Underwear for all days
whenever leave ship always have sail, sigh and ID/passport with you
You must carry your cruise card everywhere you go and a big purse is not necessary
You Need to Pack Layers
You will have better weather and potential wildlife sightings mid-seasons
