What makes a quality Toastmasters club?

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

These are notes from a toastmaster’s training. Any inaccuracies are the fault of the note taker.

– Club start and end on time
– Participants are on time and prepared.
– One club had an educational folder that has different job positions. Each new member is given a copy of that folder.
– Members and guests are warmly welcomed. One club the president of the club shook the hand of every person who came and thanked them for coming.
– Don’t rely on someone else to welcome new people
– Meetings are fast-paced, interesting and fun. Some use medial to help. The backward meeting is when all the roles are reversed in sequence. Do evaluations before the speeches.
– Transitions between segments are smooths. Agenda or let people know their roles.
– All members have an opportunity to participate. Need to be careful to have the same person doing the same thing. You need to give new people an opportunity to grow. People can feel they belong to the club when they are involved.
– Evaluations are ae helpful and constructive. You need to be honest with your evaluations and sometimes new people get intimated to review long term speakers. You can catch things other people won’t say. One speaker had an issue jabbing a finger. It was a new evaluation who pointed that out.
– Achievements and recognitions:
– Members are enthusiastic, enjoying themselves and it shows. Recognitions can also keep other members motivated.
– You can find these recommendations in moments of truth.

– Humility shows our dependence on God.
– Elder Bednar: Meekness is a spiritual gift and it is a divine path of the redeemer… (Paraphrase.
– Meekness is strong, not weak active not passive. Being modest is not self-aggrandizing. Gracious, not brash. A meek person is not easily provoked.

The legislators who attended were: Norm Thurston’s Provo; Brad dew Orem; Kurt Bragle Provo; Martha Jenkins SW Orem; Roberson Provo east; Val Peterson NW Orem; Kevin Stratton ne Provo and Orem. Any misinformation or confusion of the notes is the fault of the note taker. This is a submission to caucus corner.

Q: Special needs scholarship? Acct of rec: anything better than what is current. Use allotment of education money to go elsewhere. Is it a voucher? Bill gives parents the power to choose. Catholic principal says they have resources to help.

Q: Already illegal fake IDs to buy vape products. What about adults? Kids get their parents. Flavored vapes become more popular. Hides the fact they are as dangerous as cigarettes.

Q: Should electric cigarettes be taxed? Brad dew says yes.
Proposition 4: reworking four deciding boundaries.
We are still bound by the constitution. It still has a problem with the initiative. Getting closure through agreed-upon amendments. There is no partisan data involved in the districting. The state constitution says there is to be not the judicial branch that should not be involved to maintain the separation of powers. It is the responsibility of the legislator.

Gerrymandering; district in Salt Lake City, the Democrats wanted to have a donut hole setup. Salt Lake does not have the population to be its own district. We have difficulty getting an interpretation from anyone of gerrymandering. We support the idea of an independent commission. The first section of the title is the general provision and definitions. And write the rest of the statute. Courts can’t define gerrymandering.
Daylight savings time: put Utah on permeants congressional approval. 2. Other conditions 4 other steps approve permanent. Passed through the senate and approved committee and ready for the house floor.

Q: Why going to daylight savings time. Standards give you more light in the morning and less light at night. That is the time people come from work. So a lot more approved to go to daylights saving time yr. around. When it comes to driving in the dark, most people will be driving dark in the winter anyway. There is a trade-off both ways to or from work.

Q: Forbidding the sale of gun without background check. He is opposed to background checks for private sales.

Q: Whey can we invest in roads, housing with a surplus instead of a tax cut? Bill is in the budget process. Have 30 bills that provide some type of cut cup.

Q: Radon protection gas that comes in the basement. It can come up to ground level. Need regular testing. Deseret news had a 3 part series in the paper about gas in basements.

Q: clean air in Utah? More people our air is cleaner now than it has ever been. Two problems 1. Market place: 3 yrs. ago passed tier 3 fuel initiative. It needs to be a market issue.
If you switch car and use tier 3 fuel decreases pollution by 80%

Q: how to handle public lands? Shared stewardship options to clean up and fire.

Hp15: When people’s car used in a crime, is the car owner to be blamed? The bill is not going anywhere.

Q: Put a bill, 2 yrs. go an idea of increasing the tax. Schools keep asking for more income tax but the school doesn’t increase land property tax. It will automatically increase taxes. > hb77> if legislator increase there will be a 4% cap.

Q: Why is the number of signatures for a bill? Companies from another state (like Costco) invest a million dollars put a question/ initiative on Utah vote. They invest another million for positive advertisements to convince Utahans to vote on alcohol increase. Threats outside co. influence Utah how to protect the rights of citizens against out of state, big-money interests? Don’t know the balances of citizens and outside influence

Q: Million on education: sb41? Increase sales tax-exempt. Two billion already allotted.
Transportation: double line transits.
Citations against trump? The Utah legislators are not involved with sensor trump? No citations go to a vote of the legislator. We try to have positive things. Did have a citation for Utah to have more control of state public lands.

HW 193: abolished sales tax on hygiene products? Legislator feels such products should not be taxed.

Hb 205: funds students current in the system> moved through senate committee going to the Senate floor.

Q: Bill rewrote by Medicaid? Why writes a code. An initiative does not require lawyers familiar with Utah code or Utah constitution to pass. It does not get vetted. Once on ballet, a bill may not be constitutional. Never reviewed legality. Medicaid bill: It was not the will of the people it was written by a California union of health care and they paid for people to get signatures. The questions were not matching to what the signers thought.
When you get an initiative read it. Don‘t just sign.
Some initiative has to be tweaked and there are funding issues.

Q: Threshold for an office election? No solution yet.

Q: Bill does not review employee participation of medical? Yes. The legislator has tried a program to address unfunded liabilities.

Q: Red flag law? Protections against gun owners. House bill 229> in rules > may not likely get out of the rules committee. On many key issues, Utah becomes a battleground. If we can get this to pass in Utah it can influence how to address in other states. Great unity in legislators for about 90% of the bills.

Q: Abolishing the state income tax: no serious discussion. We need an income tax to fund the government.

Q: How to justify medical Canopus: author of medial cannabis in ca. Before he died he expressed extreme criticism on the program. CA medial canapés are nothing more than drug dealers with a storefront. When you don’t have a pharmacist> there is a butt fender> you can buy whatever you want. Needs to be monitors for dosing, transmission, and type of products and quality of products. It may raise the price. If you want to be medial it must look and feel like medicine.

Q: Can legislators give more flexibility to the county? Bill will not move to limit the choices.

Q: Apps safe for kids: has passed the house. A resolution recognizes so many products. It calls the private industry to provide a rating system so parents to see.

Q: Raw milk expanding sales: currently it is legal by self-owned store. People want to also sell raw milk products such as cheese or yogurt. You need to meet conditions like the health of cows. And public safety.

Q: Water bills. Utah will move from three million to six million in the next 20 yrs. Use a lot of water for aquaculture and human consumption. We need to be wise.

Have amendment: can use and share water outside of their boundaries. The issue with the quality of Utah Lake. Did approbations to address the algae infection in the lake. Studies will be conducted. Have an ongoing fund for carp removal. Work on proper balances of use of resources and our seer treatment program.

School fees: How create equity of students and poor families. When families below a certain income they are exempt from school fees. Each student has equal access to education. Funding comes from income tax and others come from local income taxes. Park city properly ta so high they charge no fees. Very low-income areas of the state have no fees. Try to give more money to low-income areas.

Narrative notes

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

There are notes from a webinar hosted by Johntruby Truby’s Writers studio. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

– Some authors will put in their calendar what they want to do on a certain day. First draft, edit etc.
– Mindset flites what we see and feel it has an effect on our success. Authors think if doing good writers or making money.
– Narrative drives in a forward proportion of the story that makes the reader turn the page. Narrative drive is the Narrative drive is what makes your book successful. Examples of success are Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and the Hunger Games. They have intense, non-stop narrative drive and mind-boggling sales figures. It lasts throughout the entire series.
– The plot device ‘the hero’s journey” is way too simplistic for creating that much plot, especially in a novel series.
– 3 of the most important elements of Narrative drive: 1. premise 2. Desire 3. Opponent
– You need to be able to state your story premise in one line.
– Desire is what the hero wants in this story/ book. It is the source of the narrative of the book. It is the spine of the book. It is the plotline.
– For maximum narrative drive 1. You have to be clear about the endpoint of the goal.
– Setting up a character’s desire is different from a novel series than it is for a single novel.
– Your hero needs a goal for each book and one major goal through the series.
– A high concept premise is an idea plot flip or a plot contrasts that surprised the reader.
– Maximum narrative drive #3:
– The hero must beat extreme odds to accomplish a specific and difficult goal.
– Readers root for the underdog.
– Example: in Martian, an astronaut must work on surviving on Mars along. Help is only 140,000,000,000 miles away.
– Don’t wait for the full plot to set up the narrative drive. Set up in the premise line.
– For Harry Potter, there are two desires 1. Protect the sorcery’s stone and 2. Win the house cup. The first goal contributes to the overall goal of all the books of defeating Voldemort.
– For Lord of the Rings, the overall plot is for Frodo to deliver the ring to fires of Mt. Doom. All the books are based on this main plot. You see an end of the story. There are multiple subplots that revolve around a strong spine.
– For Maximum narrative drive #2.
– Increase the intensity by which the hero wants the goal. He/she must really want it.
– The higher the stakes the more books you sell.
– Narrative drive element 3: opponent.
– Do not think of the opponent in the book as just as the bad guy. You need to have your book set up with bad guy in mind.
– Maximum narrative drive 4.
– Don’t think of the opponent as the villain who simply looks and acts like a bad guy.
– Have the main opponent who attacks the hero relentlessly and who adjusts his attacks to what the hero tries to do.
– Having a deceptive
– Maximum Narrative drive # 5.
– The true opponent is the person who wants to prevent the character from achieving their goal. This provides the drive that never stops. The hero and opponents fight over the same objective.
– Maximum narrative drive # 6:
– Have one main opponent who attacks the hero relentlessly and who adjusts his attacks to what the hero tries to do. This is an important key to a great plot. Fighting a villain gives the hero focus. The hero must beat this opponent to win. Opponent wants to win the prize for him/herself.
– Maximum narrative drive #7.
– Your hero needs to fight more than one opponent. By increasing more opponents the more complex your plot. Bad guys attack the hero from a different direction from a different way. Lord of the rings. 1.sameron, 2. The Orc army. The conflict is nonstop. Loads of plot.
– A genera has more effect on your plot. It is likely you’ll a mix of generas. Each genre has its own plot beats.
– In the action genera, it is to engage in combat.
– In a mystery, the goal is to find the truth.
– In crime is to catch a criminal.
– You must know the desire line of the main genera of your book.
– Which character promotes the best narrative drive, best one if the trickster. Most popular character there is. The more deceptions the hero uses and the opponent’s user the stronger narrative drive. Deceptions provide more reveals in the story. You need to stand out in some way from other writers.

These are notes from a church talk. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

– There are different genera and tropes and audiences expect from a certain trope.
– One trope I’ve noticed is that most people notice is the dangers and medial
– Drybar.com is a good place for clean comedy. He wanted to talk about the positives aspects of media.
– Media can increase your ability to learn. Choose wisely what you chose as it can make an effect on you. Select the media that only uplifts you.
– There is a lot of positive media if you know where to find it.
– Drivebycomedy: website.
– BYU TV also has good content. Studio C has two million subscribers.
– Mainstream medial also has a lot of offers such as Jojo rabbit. It teaches that no matter what race you are, you are valued.
– Little women movie is a good example of positive media.
– Star Wars is about good versus evil.
– Also harry potter, lord of the rings and superhero movies.
– Good content is old movies: Many films are timeless because of their mastery of storytelling.
– His favorite filmmakers is bit angle:
– He watches filtered movies and so had a chance to see the filtered movie Schindlers List. When edited, it is worth watching. One of the closing scenes of Schlinder is surrounded by the people he saved. The scene is very impressive.
– He feels making a movie can be related to the creation of the Earth. Preproduction could be related to preexistence. Second, actual products could be compared to our time on earth. And post-production is life after death. Releasing the film and being reviewed by critics and reviewers is like the final judgment.
– He believes God wants us to be creative.
– God created the world for us.
– Steven Spielberg: he would listen for a still small voice for guidance.
– The story is a hero facing challenges and overcoming those challenges.
– Stories can help us understand the lives of other people.
– We all have the Holy Ghost to prompt us what we should or should not watch.
– Quote: let us use media and technology to encourage others to become their greater selves.

How to change heart and minds

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I attended some training in Feb sponsored by Americans for Prosperity at the State building. Here are some of my notes on how to change hearts and minds. Any inaccuracies is the fault of the note taker. This is an entry to caucus corner.

– Public: short attentions span mainstream bias apathetic. And ignorance in general of what is going on
– Overtone window is a phrase to represent a set of ideas those at first objectionable but eventually becomes acceptable and believable. Some things on the internet or crazy. Some things are not accepted by society. How do you make our idea acceptable?
– Solutions to move the Overton window mindset.
– The first step is storytelling: we all tell stories in our life. Sometimes we freeze when we have an important story to tell. Stories re how we communicate with each other.
– Ted talk by Simon sinick; start with our why ted talk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp0HIF3SfI4
– Look at the organizations that are successful in communizing their why.
– People buy why you do it.
7 ways to tell a compelling story
– 1. Keep your focus on the audience. Know your audiences. Put your audience’s needs and preferences first.
– What is in the story that is impracticable to them?
– 2. Have a single message. Keep your single message a priory.
– Don’t get caught up in the other things
– 3. Have story introductions
– Disney introduces their characters 2. Share with their problem and 3. Wraps up the story
– Introduce the impacted person/ situations and characters. Show the obstacles they face. Second, how are they dealing with the problem? Wrap up with a resolution. Tell how the problem is resolved. You need to create characters. It can be you or a member of the public. You want to give your audience something they can identify with.
– 4. Create characters.
– 5. Include the facts journals who, what, where, when and why answered in story.
– 6. developed dramatic tension. Play on emotion. Make your why impactful. Action makes your story relevant. Your story needs to create tension.
– 7. be aware of all examples of stories around you. Martin Luther King and other people share strong stories. There is a resolution at the end.

– Analyze what makes those good speeches compelling to you.
– Analyze those models
– See what resonates with you.
– Legislators say it is the stories that matter and how a bill affects citizens.
– Book: made to stick: talks about stories and brain coestery.
– Example: used a different butter in movie popcorn. Brought a big dinner made a comparison if the fat in the dinner being equal to movie popcorn. And movie theaters changed. The imagery.
– Story: a single mother with 4 kids and crack on the left side would be about 200. Money was tight.
– Visual can be helpful
– The hero’s journey: lost stories are written follow a pattern

– Understanding your opposition. People don’t take the time to understand why people have a certain opinion. If you understand where the other side is coming from you can have empathy and to see how to base your responses. What is compelling of what they are talking about?
– People don’t learn the lesson from the other side. We need to follow successful tactics.
– When you see a person who uses a tactic that is useful maybe implement it but avoid things that are unethical and illegal.
– Use successful techniques for your goals.
– Legislators will meet with the different groups that are affected. For if influence county legislator will sit with county rep. see what their concerns were.
– In a debate, you write their main points and then give alternatives.
– Don’t get emotional with the person you are talking with who may feel differently.
– Someone who objects with you on one issue maybe work with you on another issue. Maintains cooperation and positive relationships.
– Quote: “We work with anyone to do right and not do wrong (maybe Fredric Douglass).
– Never burn bridges keep good relationships.
– Don’t’ take things personally and concentrate on the issue.
– Legislators may ask what is your opinion about this. And if you have opponents agree, point that out in your presentation with that legislator.
– If legislator sees ten organizations who support a bill it can influence the legislator.
– Some will create groups that are populated by only two people but have five of those two people groups and it looks like five groups.

– How do we reshape the narrative/ debate: attitude, it doesn’t feel right or it’s always been that way. Example of medial Malawania. First discussed of abuse of drugs and then people talked about how physical ailments addressed.
– Liberals have been very successful in taking the smaller wins. They think in the l long term overall success. On the tax bill, they did not take the time to convince the voter. A lot of people objected to the tax on food. Paying for food is a compelling topic. We need to consider the long game.
– District chair and legislator: not find out when having meetings. Contact your senator when hosting town halls and events.
– You talking to your rep or senators are more inpactable.
– Tax debate had a lot of poles. It did not shape legislators but did influence citizens.

– Barriers we face
– Money and time: how much effort will it take?
– Status quote or the establishment or what is the current thinking.
– Pitfall: some issues need long term persistence. It might take years to achieve a goal. The left has been very successful in changing public policy by patient persistence.
– When a bill fails, determine how well the opponents used the tools to persuade. One legislator from a certain town testified to his peer how he was affected. Maybe not have lobbied the committee. Some things are rushed and there may be 3 bills addressed in a one-hour committee.
– Study movements and see how they started. How did they get a snowball going?
– Google sagebrush rebellion. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagebrush_Rebellion)
– Echo chambers: in media (twitter) is where people feel everyone agrees. You need to get out of your echo chamber and see what others think.
– Interact well with others. Be friendly. Get a lot more with honey than vinegar. When you attack someone who disagrees with you motivate the opponent cling tighter.
