Lesson on Check and Balances of government for kids

Today’s lesson touches ways to teach about the checks and balances of government to elementary aged kids. So here is a draft of the lesson I hope to present on Wednesday for the Utah Patriot Camp 2012. I want to crate activities for the kids that might help them compare govern to their own lives. I’ll see if this works.

Three branches of government so that one branch does not become too powerful over the others. James Madison was involved in setting up the government and saw how checks and balances could work better with an elected president instead of a King.

When people moved to America and created a new nation they wanted a say how their government was run. James Madison and other founding fathers came up with a government divided into three sections.

Legislative , and
Judicial

The President represents the Executive Branch –
• President: select a boy and girl to put on crowns and sit before the class.
Have the class partition the king for their favorite dessert. King says “No!” to all. You’re going to all have pickle cake each night for a week.
• The Executive at home is Dad and Mom. (Mom can I have some ice cream? Dad can I got to the movies with my best friend? Just like mom and dad law down the rules of the house. The president’s job is to make sure the rules and laws of the country are obeyed.
• President elected compared to a king who just become king because he was a son of a king. And he told everyone else what to do.

Congress: (has congressman and senators)
• The founding fathers wanted all the people to be America to be treated fairly. The big states thought “hey we’re big states we should have more say.” The smaller states, with less people in them said “that’s not fair we want to have the same kind of vote as you do.”
• Ask different kids where their grandparents live. As they name off a different state give that child two pennies. These two pennies are you state senators. They have the responsibility to do what you want. We elect senators every six years.
Divide kids into four states CA (53), NY (29) UT (4) WY (1)
• Have students divided up into groups by their favorite dessert. Pie one area, cake, cookies another. Pretend we’re going to have a big party at the end of the week. We’re going to have games, all kinds of food, even petting animals and a clown. But the clown is very expensive. So your parents say there can only be one dessert for everybody. Everyone at the party wants to decide what deserts to have and there is only one desert. You want your desert to win.
• Have a child stand up and talk about why their desert is best. Do others in the group agree? Elect that person to represent you.

Acting Out: The Boston Tea Party For Kids

This next week the Utah Patriot Camp takes place. I have responsibility to teach two classes. Here is one of my drafts for my class about the Boston Tea party. I’ll be teaching elementary aged children and I want the class to be interactive. I was delighted to hear that the camp leaders have arranged for an actual ship to be delivered to the camp. A miniature one, obviously, but what a great tool to use to our advantage.

Purchased items:
– face paints,
– Head bands and feathers,
– Tea bags filled with plant matter
– Crates that can be easily opened by the kids and
– A mock ship.
– Also I need to finish up the two gunny bags I’ve already filled with grass. Seal them with safety pins and then sew shirt and pants on them on each of them so that they can look like sailors that the kids can throw over board along with the bags of tea.
– Camera to take picture of kids in front of the ship
– Hand wipes to clean children’s faces and fingers once they’re done if they desire.

Things I need to watch for:
– Have dabs of paint already on strips of tap so that kids don’t use too much paint by them squeezing the tubs by themselves. They’re each allotted a dab of each color of paint, premeasured. And pain will need to be dabbed just before class so it doesn’t have a chance to dry out.
– Watch for things or activities that could hurt the children by them becoming too active by throwing tea and sailors off the ship or using hammers.
– Watch my tone because once I spoke very serious and I scared my niece’s daughter making her cry.
– Some kids might not want to ‘pretend’ or dress up.
– Some kids running off unattended.
– Make sure site and ship are kid proof before activities.
– Watch the time in getting ready for the arrival at the ship.
– Helpers will help me reset the stage in preparation for the next class. There will be six groups of students for the day.
– Helpers attending each class will need to be warned in advance of what will happen so they can cheer and help get the kids to get in the mood to pretend. And they can help put paint on the kids that need help. Have plenty of hand wipes.

The presentation will be very straight forward as I am restricted to 15 min and most of that will be in them getting dressed. I am thinking that I will want to modernize the possible speech to motivate kids to dump the tea by saying things the kids might relate to.

Setup:
Briefly talk about Boston full of English citizens who felt abused by mother England. The stamp act, the sugar act, multiple acts laid upon the people to help pay for England’s war with France. The people felt they were not being properly represented back in England. They got mad and madder at the injustice.

One night, a bunch of guys were in a tavern complaining about the tea on the ships in the harbor that would be taxed. It just want’s fair. They wanted to show mother England how mad they were.
We’ll toss the sea over board, they agreed. So they dressed up like Indians and went to the ship and tossed crates and bag of tea over board.

Speech: Class, we are going to pretend like we are those men in Boston. I’ll give you a speech. You cheer me on. Give me a cheer!
Then we’ll disguise ourselves as Indians and go to the ship and toss all the tea over board. If anyone resists us we’ll toss them over board too, just like the movies

Now our make believe Boston Tea Party shall begin: Men! When have you faced a bully that was really mean and you wanted to stop him or her from being mean? Give me a cheer!

Have you ever seen someone cheat on a test and know that it’s wrong and you say Stop that! Shake your fist at me and yell Booooooo!

Mother England is adding more taxes. The Sugar Tax, The Stamp Act so she can pay for her war with France. Taxes… Taxes… Taxes. Now they want to tax our tea. I’m not going to stand it anymore. Let’s go to show them it’s wrong. Give me a cheer!

Let’s dump England’s tea into the water. Whose with me? Give me a cheer!

Run over to the table that has the paint, head sets and feathers ready.

Men, each of you grab a head set and paint strips across your cheeks like this; so you’ll look like Indians. That way they’ll never know who did it. The tea is in crates. We’ll open the crates and toss the bags over board. If there are sailors lying around and they resist us. Toss them over board too. Give me a cheer!

Spelling: conquest and conquered

I always have a hard time with these two words and use them occasionally enough in my writing that it’s about time I try to learn them.

It’s always a question who is going to win in a battle when conquest is the goal to every military leader and the loser ends up becoming the conquered. I hope that remembering that questioning the results of these two actions gives me a hint to their spelling. So I use QUE (from the word question) as my reminder for both.

Gods and mythology in Fantasy (Notes from Conduit)

I did a story telling presentation of Traits of a Hero for a SF/F convention that took place in Salt Lake City, Utah, in May. While there, I had the opportunity to attend some other panels. Here are the notes I took on how to get published. I hope they will be of use to aspiring and experienced writers. It’s a short list of notes.

– Suggested reading Sir James Frazer. Twelve books on mythology
– Borrow Gods from human kind’s myth to influence the creation of your version of Gods
– Other recommended books: Run marks, Legend walking, Joseph Campbell’s book on mythology.
– Build mythology from the environment around you. For example if your characters live in a hard land they might worship harsh Gods.
– Study cultural anthropology.
– Model your culture after real cultures.
– Create a culture that would be created by the types of Gods you create.
– Suggested book: Small Gods.
– Just s there needs to be Gods there also needs to be limits to God

Things to consider when buying a shoe

-Your feet change as you grow older
-A good walking shoe is one that won’t bend easily in the middle
-Many times people will do the wet test to see what kind of foot they have before buying a shoe. A wet test is when you get your foot wet and step on a piece of paper. You can see what parts of the paper your feet meets the paper. You can tell how much or how high your arch is and then buy a shoe that fits your type of foot.
-Shoes should bend only where your foot bends
-Don’t have fashion be a reason to buy a specific shoe
-Shoes should have good cushion to absorb shock of walking and running
-Have a sales person measure your feet while you’re standing up
-Many fancy shoe stores will permit you to return a shoe within a week if they don’t work out.
-Buy a shoe on how it fits not necessarily by a labeled shoe size.
-One foot is often larger so you may needed to ensure that you have shoes that fit each foot
-You should have wiggle room for your toes in your shoe
-Buy your shoes in the evening while you’ve been on your feet all day so that they’ve adjusted to the days activates and thus when you buy new shoes they fit feet that have been busy.
-Find a shoe that fits your foot with a little wiggle room.
-Running shoes need to be 1/2 to a full size biter than normal shoes because while you run your feet swell.
-Heals higher than 3 inches have related health/pain issues.
-Buy shoes that aren’t too tight where heel is comfortable without too much sliding.
-Often the more expensive the shoe the more types of material are put under the inside, bottom portion of the heal to prevent wear and tear of shoe and will most likely not cost less than $60
-Shoes that are too tight can add to blisters and crunched toe nails.
-Thick soles on shoes help cushion your feet when you’re walking

The Things That Bind Us: God, Family, Community, Nation

I hope this lesson will be of use to youth ministries, family devotionals and family home evening study. Today I discuss choices. This lesson could be abbreviated and presented in one lesson or you could expand the theme of God, Family, Community and nation to be four lessons with greater detail. Your choice.

Since childhood we learn what is important from the knees of our parents to the teachers we listen to at school. As we begin to mature we acquire new opinions by experience and through the people we interact with. Those teachings and life experiences bind us to how we will act in various situations.

Our parents can influence what directs us as children by what they teach and by example. The scriptures and listening to God’s messengers are good sources of gaining wisdom to support family values. Eventually, we become responsible for our own actions. Will we follow our parents’ path or take an alternative route that might complicate our lives with unnecessary hardships?

Collect all of binders from around the house. Examples might include clamps, paper clips, rubber bands, tape, string etc. Gather the family or class around and have everyone discuss how a certain binder might be useful for different circumstances. One example is that a bunch of utensils might be found by a rubber band. A binder might be useful in holding a bunch of papers etc. Now compare how the Ten Commandments, Biblical stories, honesty, dependably, family loyalty and other virtues can bind us to have better lives. Be specific in your brainstorming.

Now Go through various examples of how being bound to God can help us. Discuss what it means to be Christian. Is it a once a week thing or a life style and attitude? If time permits discuss some of your most favorite phrases and scritpures to stimulate a conversation.

What does it mean to be bound to family. We know each others greatest weaknesses and greatest strengths. Discuss how can family members support one another in shared goals and aspirations.

Community might not include being a good neighbor but being a good member of the church community and of the town and city where you live. Discuss living the laws of the land and involvement in community can help improve and sustain the community.

Country: I’ve always liked Kennedy’s quote of: “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” So the question is, how do we support our country? By being good citizens. By being informed citizens about local and national issues, obeying the law and voting to name a few. Branch out the dialog to whatever areas you feel are appropriate.

Difference between farther and further

Farther is for distance
I remember this as matching the word far away (distance) to match with farther.

Further is for adding on. I use the visual image of the u of further looking like a funnel where I can pour in further or add additional content into a container.

How to get published (Conduit panel)

I did a story telling presentation of Traits of a Hero for a SF/F convention that took place in Salt Lake City, Utah, in May. While there, I had the opportunity to attend some other panels. Here are the notes I took on how to get published. I hope they will be of use to aspiring and experienced writers.

– In the past writing short fiction for magazines was a good way for editors to get to know your work, now that there are fewer magazines this is not as much the case.
– More authors are moving to smaller presses or they self-publish.
– Small press often caters the nitch markets.
– When you write, do your best work. Not only to be well edited but other aspects of good writing.
– EBooks is a good way to reintroduce out of print books
– eBooks require more effort from the author.
– Some authors will earn money to get their book through a feature on the internet called Kick Starter (where people are invited to invest in your project and they get something in return)
– Hire an editor that is devoted to other things then copy editing and editing. They need to have the ability to analyze content. This may not be the same editor that does grammar etc.
– If you hire an editor, chose one works in the field you write, they need to know the genera and its tropes.
– Often first stories and books are not very good. Writers get better by writing.
– Good research sources: science for kids, documentaries.
– Attend writers’ conferences where editors and agents attend. Often the convention will schedule time for attendees to have a 5 minute one on one with an editor for a fee.
– Be ready to give a one sentence clear and precise line that introduced your book.
– Don’t try to hit an editor or agent up for a read while they’re in the bathroom. (That’s been done before—that’s a definite no no.
– How to get past writing requirements of publishers who say ‘no unsolicited manuscripts’. You can send queries to as many editors/agents as you want. If the agent/editor expresses an interest that query response becomes a solicited manuscripts and you can submit your work.
– Networking matters = people can tell when others are making friends to use them, or to be genuine friends.
– Show courtesy to all you interact with.
– Don’t write long letters to agents/editors be precise and to the point.
– Submit every quarter to Writers of the Future contest, if you win to the level that you are invited to the one week workshop, you will have a lot of people interested in meeting you.
– Also check out Clarian workshop or other writing workshops.
