Plot-Storming from character:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

This information is from a panel I listened to a year or so ago. I took notes while attending a wonderful SF/F symposium called Life The Universe and Everything. The panels are very educational. The presenter was Paul Genesse.

–         The most common thing that makes books memorable is the character.

–         Recommended book: People’s Names by Holly Ingram.

–        Names that have the letter k in them are considered strong names.

–        Recommended book: How to write a damn good novel by James Fray.

–        A memorable character is created by giving them a trait that is beyond normal and has negative trails with positive. Real characters have flaws. You need to create an interest when reading about these characters.

–        If you want a rich character give them a family.

–        Need a hook. What does he/she want?

–        Go to the website keirsey.com. This site provides the four temperaments of people and four subcategories under each main temperament. It also provides personality tests. You can also see what your temperament is. Define your main and secondary characters with these traits.

–        Writers who have really good plots have really good books. Writers who have really good characters have really good careers.

–        As you rewrite you add traits that will attract the reader to that character. Create a character bible and can also keep track of history and physical traits etc.

–        Write a biography from the character’s point of view. It will point out what is important to them. People will lie from their point of view then add the truth.

–        Strong character’s make strong decision.

–        Don’t let circumstance blow your character around otherwise they are seen as weak.

–        Make a list of the major decisions the character makes in your book. Look at each decision and ask does this ring true to the story? What are your characters’ reasonable options? What does he want most in his life? What does he assume to be true but is not?

–        Ask yourself; is a decision at some point of the story out of character for this person? For example if he is normally selfish but shows an unselfish act that something prior to that act needs to make it so that we believe the new response. There will also be inner conflict if the person is doing something out of character.

–        Inner conflict can be useful when on goal of a character conflicts with another goal and he has to choose between the two or one will cost the other. Same thing with outer conflict.

–        As a character makes a choice, the writer should ask if this decision continues where will it lead.

–        Clues need to be inserted marlin in the story that will influence a decisions of a character and make that decision believable.

–        Your character must be growing and progressions at all times in the story.

–        A character’s actions may sometime conflict with what that character says.

–        Each chapter needs to be progressing or regressing. If a chosen chapter shows no direct than that chapter needs to be cut out. As long as there is believable movement, than the readers will be satisfied.

–        For a series of books you can provide a problem in book one that will provide growth of a character in a future book.

–        If a character makes a bad decision, he needs to do it for a believable reason.

I have a goal to contribute some of my personal comments in entries that contain notes and knowledge from other people. One of things I like doing when I attended panel is to give myself assignments. And as this panel was one of two years ago, I see that beyond typing up my notes from that presentation, I’ve never done any of my goals. I’m sure no one can relate to this characteristic.

I had a goal to go through my current book and actually make a list of the characters major decisions. I realized that I done this, I could’ve had a much better sequence of character arches throughout the plot of my book. It would be nice if I could follow the counsel that I so diligently type up from these talented people.

Some of the things I wrote down to use to evaluate my book were:

Make list of the major decisions the character makes in your book.

Look at each decision and ask does this ring true to the story?

What are your characters’ reasonable options?

What does he want most in his life?

What does he assume to be true but is not?

I remember making an observation on while ago about the usefulness of telling someone a plot that you’re working on. Because when the listener starts asking questions, they may ask things that you may not know until you try to answer the question. I found this useful when I was telling a friend of one of my plots and it was her questions that I created answers that added more debt to the original story. That’s just an additional idea Dave, consider using when you wanting to work on a character arch and character development of your own books.

If you have some ideas that you like to share on plotting or characterization, please provide comments in the appropriate section of this blog. Thanks

Police and civilian procedures against terrorists’ attacks:

First of all, my condolences and best wishes to those who were hurt or killed in Boston from the terrorists attacks. The United States has been fighting against terrorists since Thomas Jefferson. Thinking upon this topic, I thought it might be of use to present some links of police and citizen procedures if we were to encounter a terrorist situation personally.

I hope the following links can be of use:

Seeking the one true expert:

I hope the following lesson can be of use to youth ministries, family devotionals, family counselors, and family home evenings. Today’s topic is the value of experts, in particular, the expert of God.

Let’s say, you need to lay down tile for a floor, but you have never done it before. Would you just wing it, by buying various tiles and glue that you think you might need, and employ the tools you think you will need and just slab it down?

Usually when someone wants to do a quality job on a task, he or she will usually search out the procedure before implementation. You might peruse magazines or brochures to find which tiles look attractive to the room you want to update. There is a good chance you will research out what the pros and cons are of various installation techniques and various tiles. You might watch how I didn’t be used on YouTube. Most likely, you’ll seek friends or peers who possess experienced knowledge of the same task you want to do. You may even hire a professional craftsman to do it on your behalf. The thing is that you value the end result; and, because of that you and ever to make informed and effective decisions. Many people will gain experience by doing smaller projects and as they accomplish skills and experience they will then move to bigger tasks.

The same principle can apply those of us who seek to follow God, our Heavenly Father. God has given us many instructions on how to live our lives through his Scriptures, Christ teachings, his prophets and may even influence our actions by prompting our hearts through his Holy Spirit. Just as I would not seek out the knowledge of a car salesman to teach me how to install tiles, so I may not want to rely upon the knowledge of man to teach me the principles of God.

It would be more beneficial for me to go to the expert, God himself, and his son Jesus Christ.

Just as we may practice doing small tasks before we feel empowered to do the bigger tasks so concentrating upon living God’s individual commandments can help us to gain the experience to live our lives more fully under God’s direction.

Objects of the lesson: paper, pencils, and several cups.

Have different members of the family or the class quickly draw free-form circles on pieces of paper. Let them make several circles and discuss how the circles may improve with practice. Next, place the mouth of a cup face down on the paper and have each student or family member draw their pencil around the circumference of the cup to make a perfect circle.

Following the path of the exterior of a cup enables your family members to draw a perfect circle. So going to God himself and his avenues of communication can inform us how to better follow him.

If you have some ideas on what to contribute to this message, please feel free to share it in the comment section of this blog. Thank you.

Presentation on Utah’s version of Common Core:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Last night I attended the Alpine School District meeting hosted by the school administration to discuss the new education school system. The room was filled to capacity with over 200 people, I’m thinking. The first hour was filled with an administrator giving a presentation  about the new education system. With my wonderful eyesight, I couldn’t see the text on the screen so I can’t give information about it other than the things I heard.

Here are some notes that I took for as much as I could catch from what was said: I tried to write down information is accurately as I could. I apologize. I did not get the names of the administrators who gave the presentation and answered the questions. There were a lot of parents eager to ask question and some of them were quite ‘warm’ against the implementation of Common Core.

SAGE: was built for Utah and appears to be Utah’s version of Common Core.

CRT: means Critical Referenced Tests.

Sage is replacing a program called Utips:

–        It contains resource libraries and operational field tests.

–        It’s not expected to be complete until the spring of 2014. It will measure student achievements.

A I R: is an assessment company that offers adaptive testing for all levels of technology. It should work for schools that have advanced technology, as well as those that don’t.

The education will concentrate upon language, arts and math.

Utah opted out to test human scores (not sure what I was trying to write down here).

There are four levels of assessment, such as low achiever mid-low achiever mid high achiever and high achiever (they use different terms of what I’m using.)

Webinars will be available to the public, but they are not available right now. The website should be ConnectSchools.Utah.gov.aaci (I’m not sure if that’s accurate.)

Information for the tests will first be created by volunteer teachers, who are certified in their field of teaching. That resource will not be able to provide the entire list of questions, so additional material will be provided by questions gathered from other states and the third source will be from the A I R organization and their collection of questions.

A board a 15 parents will be used to look at the contents of the tests to find if they are satisfactory. Five board members will be determined by the state Congress. Five additional parents will be selected by the state representatives and the final five will be determined by the Utah State school Board.

There’s were a lot of parents in the room, and they expressed a lot of concerns. The administration seemed to be surprised by people’s response. One parent expressed concerns about how multiplication is being handled as well as decimal points are being handled in the new math.

Parents are concerned with student data being collected and being forwarded to the federal government or maybe even being distributed elsewhere. Already, her son, who is a junior, has received two advertisements in the mail, encouraging him to rent a tux for a school dance. She wonders how these businesses have learned that her student is of the age of a junior. An additional concern is with the rampant security breaches by hackers, the collection of student information could be easily hacked and the information abused.

Parents are concerned about what information is being shared with the federal government. The administrator said that all the information is forwarded is not specific to the name of the student. It does contain a parent’s financial information, if a student has a disability, and their gender, etc., but not their names.

Parents want the opportunity to opt out of this version of Common Core. My perception is that the administration is surprised by this request and it appears that this request is a new concept for them. The administrator says that he’ll look into it.

Parents expressed curiosity as to why Utips was abandoned for this new system and why it just wasn’t updated?

A number of parents are concerned that the PTA will be the people to determine what is accepted or not. As the PTA has accepted a lot of money from sources supporting Common Core, some parents feel this is a conflict of interests.

When asked who is writing the question for the tests. The administrator said that blueprint is the format of the questions and A IR is being hired to help provide questions.

Blueprint will be put up online for review.

When parents said they wanted to have access to the analytics of their student tests, the administration said this was not possible due to security of the information. Many parents did not receive this information well.

It was about 2 ½ hours into the meeting and I had to leave for my next appointment, so I was unable to document the list of additional questions given by parents.

I hope this information is of use.

For anyone else who attended the meeting, please feel free to add your perceptions and things you learned.

Book bomb in support of Dave & Mary Wolverton and their son:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I encourage everyone to check this out, most sincerely, Melva Gifford.

Ben Wolverton, age 16, was in a tragic long-boarding accident on Wednesday the 4th, 2013. He suffers from severe brain trauma, a cracked skull, broken pelvis and tail bone, burnt knees, bruised lungs, broken ear drums, road rash, pneumonia, and is currently in a coma. His family has no insurance.

Ben is the son of author David Farland, whose books have won multiple awards, and who is widely known as a mentor to many prominent authors, such as Brandon Sanderson, Stephenie Meyer, and Brandon Mull. Costs for… Ben’s treatment are expected to rise above $1,000,0000. To help raise money for Ben, we are having a book bomb (focused on Nightingale and Million Dollar Outlines) on behalf of Ben

You can learn more about Ben’s condition, or simply donate to the Wolverton family here: http://www.gofundme.com/BensRecovery

WHAT IS A BOOK BOMB?

A Book Bomb is an event where participants purchase a book on a specific day (in this case, Wednesday, April 10th) to support the author, or, in this case, a young person in serious need: Ben Wolverton.

WHAT BOOK SHOULD I PURCHASE?

David Farland’s young adult fantasy thriller NIGHTINGALE has won SEVEN awards, including the Grand Prize at the Hollywood Book Festival–beating out ALL books in ALL categories. It is available as a hardcover ($24.99), ebook ($7.99), audio book ($24.99), and enhanced novel for the iPad ($9.99).

You can purchase it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006P7SEBY/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il?ie=UTF8&camp=211189&creative=373489&creativeASIN=B006P7SEBY&link_code=as3&tag=davidfarnet-20

Barnes and Noble: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/nightingale-david-farland/1107084747?ean=2940016100463

on the Nightingale website: http://www.nightingalenovel.com/

or, you can get the enhanced version complete with illustrations, interviews, animations, and its own soundtrack through iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/nightingale/id560309064?mt=11

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Some people sing at night to drive back the darkness. Others sing to summon it. . . .

Bron Jones was abandoned at birth. Thrown into foster care, he was rejected by one family after another, until he met Olivia, a gifted and devoted high-school teacher who recognized him for what he really was–what her people call a “nightingale.”

But Bron isn’t ready to learn the truth. There are secrets that have been hidden from mankind for hundreds of thousands of years, secrets that should remain hidden. Some things are too dangerous to know. Bron’s secret may be the most dangerous of all.

IS IT GOOD?

Authors such as James Dashner (The Maze Runner), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn), and Paul Genesse (Iron Dragon series) all PRAISED it. Nightingale has 4 and a half stars on Amazon. Read what other people are saying here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006P7SEBY/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il?ie=UTF8&camp=211189&creative=373489&creativeASIN=B006P7SEBY&link_code=as3&tag=davidfarnet-20 Or, purchase the novel and find out for yourself.

WHAT IF I ALREADY OWN NIGHTINGALE? OR I’M NOT INTERESTED IN IT?

If you are a writer, you may want to consider purchasing David Farland’s MILLION DOLLAR OUTLINES. It has been a bestseller on Amazon for over a month and is only $6.99.

As a bestselling author David Farland has taught dozens of writers who have gone on to staggering literary success, including such #1 New York Times Bestsellers as Brandon Mull (Fablehaven), Brandon Sanderson (Wheel of Time), James Dashner (The Maze Runner) and Stephenie Meyer (Twilight).

In Million Dollar Outlines, Dave teaches how to analyze an audience and outline a novel so that it can appeal to a wide readership, giving it the potential to become a bestseller. The secrets found in his unconventional approach will help you understand why so many of his authors go on to prominence.

CAN I JUST DONATE MONEY?

You can donate money to Ben here: http://www.gofundme.com/BensRecovery

(Or you could purchase a book as a gift for someone else.)

I WANT TO HELP BUT I DON’T HAVE ANY MONEY!

The best way you can help is by spreading the word of Ben’s donation page, and/or this book bomb. Share it on facebook, twitter, pinterest, your blog—anywhere you can. Invite others to the event.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT BEN. WILL HE BE OKAY?

David Farland has been keeping everyone posted on facebook. Subscribe or friend him to get up-to-date information: https://www.facebook.com/david.farland1. At the moment, Ben is stable and appears to be improving.

Thank you!

Ben and his family greatly appreciate your support, and so do all who love and care about them.

Quotes from Margaret Thatcher:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I am a big fan of Margaret Thatcher. I was sad to hear about her passing away today, but I feel she’s gone to a better place. From what I understand, there were three people that significantly contributed to restraining Russia’s increasing tyranny. Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Pope John Paul II. Today’s blog is dedicated to Margaret Thatcher.

The following are some of Margaret Thatcher’s most famous quotes. My condolences go to the family of Mrs. Thatcher for her loss.

In politics, if you want something said, ask a man; if you want to get something done, ask a woman. : http://abcnews.go.com/US/margaret-thatchers-inspiring-quotes/story?id=18908068

What is success? I think it is a mixture of having a flair for the thing that you are doing; knowing that it is not enough, that you have got to have hard work and a certain sense of purpose.: http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/m/margaret_thatcher.html

Ronnie and I got to know each other at a time when we were both in Opposition, and when a good many people intended to keep us there. They failed, and the conservative 1980s were the result. But in a certain sense, we remained an opposition, we were never the establishment. As Ron once put it: the nine most dangerous words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.’ As usual, he was right.”:  http://abcnews.go.com/US/margaret-thatchers-inspiring-quotes/story?id=18908068

I always cheer up immensely if an attack is particularly wounding because I think, well, if they attack one personally, it means they have not a single political argument left.: http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/m/margaret_thatcher.html

The fact that we are gathered here, now — shocked but composed and determined – is a sign not only that this attack has failed but that all attempts to destroy democracy will fail.: http://abcnews.go.com/US/margaret-thatchers-inspiring-quotes/story?id=18908068

Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t. http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/m/margaret_thatcher.html#D0M7EvCFv7t78Y1v.99

The people of the Falkland Islands, like the people of the United Kingdom, are an island race. Their way of life is British; their allegiance is to the Crown. They are few in number, but they have the right to live in peace, to choose their own way of life and to determine their own allegiance. It is the wish of the British people and the duty of Her Majesty’s Government to do everything that we can to uphold that right. That will be our hope and our endeavour and, I believe, the resolve of every member of the House. :  http://abcnews.go.com/US/margaret-thatchers-inspiring-quotes/story?id=18908068

Teaching fire safety, dedicated to Pres. Monson

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Today’s lesson is geared to help teach the concept of fire safety to young children. I hope this lesson can be of use to youth ministries, youth counselors, parents and grandparents.

The challenge of this kind a lesson is to teach the dangers of fire without including fire itself. For sometimes a flame be very alluring and you can accomplish the opposite of what you intended by making fire look attractive to young child.

Object of the lesson should be:

–        A couple of photos of homes and neighborhoods before and after a fire.

–        A couple of photos of forest before and after fire, plus forest creatures.

–        Some photos of people that have been hurt by fires, but not too scary.

–        A chair.

–        Different clothing of various members of the family, particularly coats and items of heavy material.

–        A rock or brick.

–        An egg.

Gather your children into your family room. Distribute photographs amongst the family of the beauty of the forest and the beauty of the neighborhoods before a fire. Maybe discuss how long it takes to make things look pretty and how long it takes for trees to grow or to build a house. Maybe discuss how a father and mother will save money to purchase a home or to rent an apartment. Remind the family of all the various pleasant activities that have taken place inside the home. Give specific examples of how pleasant it is to live in a home and to enjoy the beauty of a forest. If you’ve had a chance to go camping, discuss the virtues of visiting nature and enjoying the homes of various animals that live in the forest.

Now start talking about the dangers of fire. The sometimes a fire can start small thing and appears under control. Sometimes, when there is fuel for the fire, it can quickly burn out-of-control and it’s hard to stop it.

Now show photos of the damage homes, neighborhoods, force and people that have been hurt by fire. You might even show a video from the Internet of unhappy family has lost the home. Some fires are not intentional, and were not caused by humans. They may have been started by a lightning bolt. Sometimes a fire is started intentionally by a mean person or while children are playing with fire, and it may burn out-of-control. Maybe give some specific examples of how a fire may spread.

Discussed some of the techniques used to keep a campfire safe. Discuss how adults contain would properly within a fireplace in a home. Maybe show how glass around a lamp helps keep us safe.

But the best way to keep one safe with fire, especially when very young, is to not be involved with fire at all. Fire should be handled only by adults. To show how fire can be so powerful, try the following object lesson:

Have one of the children hold up a kitchen chair. Have him hold it directly in front of himself with his arms extended until he is arms start getting tired. As he is holding the chair, you can make a comparison of the heaviness of the chair is like the sudden inability to control a fire. No matter how hard you try, you can’t keep hold in the chair up because your arms are tired. Just like tired arms, sometimes a fire is hard to stay confined. It can lose control.

When the child tires holding the chair, have him sit down and choose another child to hold a chair. Now in the early part of holding the chair, it’s easy. But this time, as soon as the child starts holding the chair, began hanging a bunch of clothes on the legs of the chair so that the chair quickly becomes too heavy to hold. Emphasize again, that just as a child must lower the chair, because it is too heavy, so a fire can be suddenly burn out-of-control.

To help bring this point home have the family gathered around the kitchen sink. Hold a rock over one of the raw eggs. Ask the child: What will happen if I drop this rock in that egg in the sink?

If they don’t know, explain how the rock is bigger and heavier than the egg and it will crush the egg when it lands on the egg. Illustrate that by dropping the rock on the egg and crushes the egg. Talk about how the egg was perfect to cook before you broke it with a rock. But now we can’t cook it because the shell and the yoke are all mixed together. It’s ruined. Wisdom is that we know that we want to avoid dropping and rock on an egg, because we know the consequences or end result. We know it’s dangerous to the egg. And just like we don’t want to drop a rock on an egg, so you don’t want to play with matches or lighters because of the danger that can happen with fire.

Another way you might be able to bring this point home is that before the family devotional, or family home evening, talk about having an evening breakfast. Talk about all the wonderful things shall have, but that the central dish must be egg related. This might mean either omelets or quiche or fried bacon and eggs, or whatever the family enjoys that is egg related. But during the lesson everyone takes a turn dropping a brick to break an egg. After the lesson you show that you can’t have the plan breakfast because essential ingredient is now missing, the eggs. By breaking all the eggs with the brick you’ll have to change your supper. And this in turn teaches another way of consequence. Instead of a fancy breakfast, you’ll have a substandard breakfast, such as milk and toast.

I hope this lesson can be of use to teach fire safety. This concept may need to be taught in various ways throughout a child’s life. This lesson is dedicated to President Monson.

If you have found a successful way to teach your children safety, please feel free to share it in the comment section this blog. Thank you.
