Who has moved?

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I heard a wonderful thought last week at church that was thought provoking for me. Someone made the statement that if we have lessened our relationship to God. It is not God moved. I thought of a very thought-provoking comment. And that is a good topic for an object lesson. I hope the following lesson can be of use to youth ministries, family counselors, and family home evenings and devotionals.

Get two magnets and place them on a sheet of glass. Prior to the object lesson notice, which side a magnet will repel the other magnet and which side will attract the other magnet. Now for the Object Lesson place both magnets close to each other and begin to push the opposites toward each other so that the one magnet is pushed away. Then as the second half of the object lesson have the two magnets face each other so that they are attracted.

The theme of this object lesson is that our relationship to God is dependent upon our efforts. God wishes us to be close to him and follow his commandments, but our apathy or our lack of desire to move away from God. We may be motivated to not the follow in God’s footsteps, or to not seek his influence. If there is a separation between us and God, It is not God who moved.

Do you have additional ideas on how to teach this concept? Please feel free to share them in the comment section this blog. Thanks

Mia Love Speech:

Here are my notes of the speech from Mia love when she spoke at the rally of the Republican Utah conference. I tried to be as accurate as I could and hope I haven’t misrepresented the speaker in any way.

–          We want our children to have the best. We don’t hear about self-reliance today.

–          We should have four goals:

–          1. Get involved in figure out what you want to do. If you don’t stand up lesser people will.

–          2. Know why you’re involved.

–          3. Improve your messaging and power by your personal touch. Here is an example. A 6 yr. old little girl loves baseball.  She knew the stats of the sport. She attended a major game, and she sat near a guy who was impressed with her knowledge. Because that section of the stadium was getting too rowdy the girl and her family relocated. During the game a ball was hit and delivered to rowdy section of the stadium. This guy who the girl previously talked to caught the ball. he then immediately carried the ball down to the little girl. Normally a fan will take the ball and go down to the players to get it signed. Instead, she went back up in the stands to find the guy who gave her the ball and had him sign the ball. Now as adult women she has that baseball on the mantle of her fireplace in the position of honor.

–          4. We can’t do it alone.

–           I trust you over the people of Washington

Bad: Valueable

Good: Valuable

Ok, I keep wanting to put in an e which is bad. So here are some mnemonics to help me remember to avoid the e. If there is a lot of Extra items that are the same they are not rare and thus if they’re in abundance they are not valuable. No e (for extras) and they are valuable.

Second You have a valuable skills if u (you) are able to do something useful. Thus Uable. The second one is stretching it a little but we’ll see if either of these works.

Do you have a better idea, please feel free to share your recommendation on remembering how to spell this word.

–          Don’t forget to include your protagonist.

–          Placement of resolution is very important. Denouement.

–          You can have little resolutions going along throughout the story; but, leave the big one within the last two chapters of book.

Teaching about the Holy Ghost:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Last week I referenced to great examples of teachers teaching religious principles to children. This week I like to share how one teacher told about the Holy Ghost. This teacher talked about how the Holy Ghost can provide feeling of comfort and confirmation to our lives. She discussed how the Holy Ghost can help us make decisions. I try to relay the lesson as best as I remember

She illustrated this principle by two great object lessons. She had the two children being baptized stand and turn their backs to the audience. She then said that you can listen to a familiar voice and recognize it. And when you recognize that voice to be a source you can trust and follow it. She then said I’m going to have someone call out and you tell me if you recognize the voice. The teacher then pointed to the first father of the first child and the father called out her name and the child recognized his voice. The teacher did the same for the second child and she recognized her father’s voice. She then made a comparison of how the Holy Ghost can become a familiar voice and we can learn to trust the Holy Ghost, as we strive to live worthy to receive, prompting of the Holy Ghost.

The second great example. She taught about how the Holy Ghost could be comfort. She then gave each little girl of warm fuzzy blanket. She let each child wrap themselves with their blankets, She made a comparison have the Holy Ghost can be a comfort to them, just as the blankets can be a comfort for the girls.

One thing that I thought was particularly brilliant about this is that the children can now take these blankets home and each time they use these blankets, they can make the connection of the blanket being like the Holy Ghost, and they can have a constant a reminder with them of the Holy Ghost being a comfort. By giving them the blankets to take home as the lesson can be taught again and again and again as the child reflects upon the blanket.

if you have a good way to teach the principle of the Holy Ghost, please feel free to share it in the comment section of this blog, please feel free to share it.

A variety of benefits from volunteering:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Today is just a short blog and I’m reflecting upon this topic.  I thought what are some of the benefits of volunteering? So here are some benefits. How could volunteering help:

You gain experiences

I admit that I am very self-centered. I can see how volunteering can get me out of my box and at the same time I gain new experiences I’ve never had before. This can make me a more informed individual and depending upon where I volunteer. I can learn some new skills and it can broaden my perspectives on various individuals, events and perspective of the world.

Making new friends:

As I think back upon my life. It’s interesting where I have met some of my best friends. What better place is there to meet people than those who volunteer their time for a cause they believed in? It provides the possibility to maybe make new friends. I have a hard time making new friends. This will give me a chance to practice. Volunteering is a good place to befriend people who are the type of individuals who donate their time to help others. As a single person this seems like a great way to occupy one of my evenings.

Helping people:

It’s amazing how many wonderful things can be accomplished through volunteers. It helps aid in the ills of the world. It helps produce wonderful events of the community or elsewhere, and it lets people who have a variety of skills and knowledge help build other people up. There’s also the idea that many hands make light work.

Not only can it help me and others spiritually and mentally on helping others because it helps us get outside our box of being self-centered. It may help us make the world a better place by learning and meeting other people that may have a similar ambition. It becomes a win-win scenario.

Anticipation is key:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Here are some notes are rolled up from a lecture on anticipation in fiction. I hope they can be of use.

–          Don’t mistake action for suspense.

–          Action is the thrill of the moment.

–          The anticipation of violence is much more suspenseful then the violence itself.

–          Suspense is anticipatory: action is the thrill of the moment.

–          Emphasize the unknown.

–          Knowing a killer behind the door is more suspenseful than him performing the murder.

–          As you build toward each event, make each step increasingly more personal to the protagonist.

–          Foreknowledge of a bad event is anticipatory, knowing there is no way to avoid it heightens suspense. Don’t see the shark in Jaws movie until later.

–          Give hints of current actions that will give reader idea how they might react to new situations.

–          Book: blink of the eye: bedroom, brother, monster, parents say monster not real.

If you have some ideas to add this topic, feel free to share them in the comment section this blog.
