A negative reputation is like lint on tape:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

People who lie, steal or cheat will often try the present themselves as trustworthy people, but as others become familiar with the type of person he or she is, those types of people are soon recognized to be untrustworthy. I hope this lesson can be of help to youth ministries, family devotionals, family councils and home evenings. Tonight’s topic is on the topic of a positive reputation.

Object lesson: tape, a piece of paper, and a very fluffy sweater.

Roll up a strip of masking tape into a ring. Press the ring of tape  (sticky side on the outside ) against a piece of paper and it can pick up that paper. Now, start pressing different parts of the tape against a fluffy sweater and the tape begins picking up the lint from the sweater. Eventually the piece of tape will have so much lint it can no longer pick up the paper.

This can be compared to the loss of a positive reputation. As people start performing acts of stealing or cheating or lying, each of those acts can be compared as a piece of lint that gets pressed against the tape of one’s integrity. As you press more acts of dishonesty against the tape, the tape becomes filled with the litter of dishonesty. The dishonest person becomes recognized as the type of person they really are.

My invitation is for each of us to make a stronger effort to avoid the lived and to maintain as much integrity as we can. Often it is easier to avoid the lint in the first place rather than trying to remove the lint later. Lint can be removed by repentance, recompense, and a commitment to avoid doing such acts in the future.

If you have an alternative way to present this concept, please feel free to share it in the comment section of the blog. Thanks

Action:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

While I attended Life the Universe and Everything this year I took some great notes on a panel about writing action. I hope the info can be of interest.

–          Action scenes can either make or break the book.

–          Work two very the tension levels, and various areas of your book that will add variety. You need to rise and fall the attention of the plot.

–          Rules of writing action: if it’s awesome and the readers like it did in.1. Gives boring fix it.

–          Fast-paced action of a book is sometimes longer narrative, so be careful of being too wordy.

–          Make the action seen as exciting as possible.

–          Watch for line by line descriptions of action, such as he did, I did, he did.

–          You don’t have to describe every action for the reader can fill in the spots.

–          Sometimes you can just tell the results of action.

–          When writing first person you don’t have to describe that I saw the character do this or that.

–          You could nickname the various minions to keep them separate in a fight scene, such as ball. The, that, etc.

–          mix up action scenes in a different type of action gunfight in one area, chasing and another dialogue, conflict in another, or by providing different types of location with the battle moves such as train for the water, et cetera.

–          Write what you do know, and it will show up to your writing.

–          Fake it until you make it.

–          Do as much research as possible.

–          Any action you write needs to be seen from the viewpoint of the character.

–          The more experiences you have the more realistic the streams will become.

–          You can access the Internet to ask questions from people that have the knowledge you need, and to offer technical device.

–          Find people who have the knowledge that you need to research.

–          Many people can read your work and review it on the mindset of their knowledge.

–          When the effects of adrenaline1. You get tunnel vision. 2. You Experience, time lapse and loses sense of time 3. you lose short-term memory 4. Strength goes up.. 5.Motor skills go down.

–          For good chasing concentrate upon the intensity of the moment and what is accomplished at the end of the chase.

–          Both plot and characterization or advanced in the story to action.

–          Have things happening during an action scene. Such as the consequences that are left behind after the characters move on.

–          Action scene is a good place for character development is you see how the character responds under pressure.

–          During a car chase scene change what is happening, such as were the driving, dialogue, respond one another or change the environment.

–          Trim the fat off on action scenes and remove any unnecessary stuff. If it’s clanking it slows down . But don’t cut out too much or it might lose some of the transition of the sequence of events.

–          If you need to use a tool or point of information that will be important during an action scene. You want to do some earlier in the story, so that you don’t have to reduce it at the time it is needed. Otherwise, it will slow down the action as you explain the identity production.

–          Don’t be afraid to hurt your character. But when you do the realistic on the results of the and the capability restrictions influenced by their hurt you need to be realistic about what a character can do.

–          Is all the characters, sensory, the case, such as the taste of blood in the mouth, etc., or the death after an explosion

Wrong Number:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

For today’s lesson I would like to discuss wrong numbers. I hope today’s topic can be of use of youth ministries, family counselors, family devotionals and home evenings.

Most of us have called a wrong number when we are trying to contact someone. There are other ways we can get a wrong number. By going to the wrong source/wrong number we are delayed in getting to the correct source. Or there may be a time that we access a wrong source and believe what we are told without considering the source of the knowledge we gain. Perhaps we should questions the motivations behind a person who may intentionally mislead us.

Getting info from wrong numbers can be illustrated in multiple ways.

First, when I was on a mission, I remember meeting people and some of them started to tell me what I believed in. I was surprised how they could do that when they had just met me. They would then proceed to tell misinformation of things they had heard from others about my religion. Though I would endeavor to correct that info, they did not believe me. Personally, I think I am more qualified to know what I believe in then someone who doesn’t know me.  I compare it to going to a Ford dealer to learn the attributes of a Toyota. Can I honestly expect an accurate account from a competitor who wants my business?

I find that I am very vulnerable to mems listed on Facebook. I will see misrepresentations of political figures I follow and watch and I will see words getting put into their mouths. It makes me realize that for politicians that have opposite views than mine may also be having words put into their mouths. It makes me realize that if I want to be an accurate and informed citizen I need to seek out the original source of information. Also, I’ve learned that in the name of politics people are not above intentionally lying.  People will also make proclamations on stats and number that are not accurate.

Some feel that the end justifies the means.

Another way we need to be cautious unfortunately is of people who are willing to steal and lie for financial gain. I’ve heard of multiple accounts of people who will scam old people from their retirement income with no conscience.  There have been multiple accounts of me hiring someone for labor at my home who say they guarantee their work but when I call them back, they don’t honor their word. This makes me appreciate that when a man or woman gains a reputation for quality work and integrity, I want to rely upon those accounts.

Sometimes people will steal another’s identify for personal gain.

Repeating a lie enough times and it is considered truth. How many times have we heard something over and over again and then believe it because we’ve heard it so often. I remember hearing in history how nifty Thomas Edison was. It is neat all the inventions his lab help develop. But as a person, he did some cruddy things to his competitors, such a Tesla.

I invite each of us to consider what we think is truth that might be a lie. This a good reason to seek God and the scriptures for insight.

Sometimes public pressure can force a wrong number. I remember hearing about an experiment at a University. A test subject was put into a room with seven ‘actors’. They were told to look at 3 various sized lines and report which was one shortest. The seven actors were told to intentionally give a wrong answer. By the time the question was asked of the test subject that person followed the rest in their answer because they didn’t want to stand out. How often have I and others done the same to fold under public pressure?

My invitation is for us to be aware of these vulnerabilities and discuss such possibilities to our students and family. You can provide different scenarios that would be relevant to your situation.

Writing a synopsis:

I am doing research and took some notes off several sites who gave advice on writng synopsis. The sites are listed below and here are some of the key ideas I learned.

–          In the upper left hand corner you should have the following info:Synopsis of “Title here”Genre:……………..Word count:By__________ Single space your synopsis.

–          One page.

–          The short synopsis of power starts with SETTING – when and where the story is set.

–          Written in third person, present tense,

–          The first mention of each character’s name is put in all-caps

–          We describe the chronological sequence

–          Reveal big problems in your story. Include core conflict

–          Use active voice, not passive

–          demonstrate what is at stake

–          Choose your descriptive words carefully, ensuring that you’re using words that carry a lot of weight

–          written in the same style of writing your book is written in

–          Opening hook

–          synopsis includes the characters’ FEELINGS and EMOTIONS.

–          book: Archetypes that Make Your Story Resonate

–          Incident (Story Advancement) + Reaction (Color) = Decision (Story Advancement)

–          The main plot elements – the main conflict, the dramatic high points, the climax, and, of course, the resolution

–          include all major turning points associated with that formula.

–          ending paragraph must show how major conflicts are resolved

–          main characters’ conflicts clearly defined?

–          Leave all the complex subplots out.

–          Don’t include any unnecessary detail, description, or explanation.

–          most agents finally settling on 1-2 pages, total. If you write yours as one page, single-spaced, it’s the same length as two pages, double-spaced — and either are acceptable

–          Read through what you’ve written and check that every event in the story naturally leads into the next. Imagine beginning each sentence with a Because

–          (Synopses longer than one page should be double-spaced.) Its paragraphs are usually indented, with no spaces between paragraphs. You do not use a cover page or any fancy headings or fonts.

–          use the type of energetic and brisk voice you need for your synopsis read the backs of paperback novels.

–          Write your synopsis in the same format as your manuscript.

–          removing excess words and phrases that don’t help you tell the story.

–          what is at stake for your heroes, what they stand to lose, and how it all turns out.

–          Cut adverbs and adjectives from your synopsis – write as minimally as you can.

Spelling catastrophe:

Good: catastrophe

bad: catosphy

The letters of ‘astro’  is the part of the word I keep messing up on. I have one idea but it is not the best one yet. But one catastrophe was the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. A lot of astronauts got killed. So maybe if I associate  catASTROphy  to the loss of ASTROnauts  I might remember this word.

If you have a better recommendation, please share in the commend section of this blog.
