Three beans of gratitude:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Heard of a great object lesson at church today and was very appropriate for Thanksgiving season. I hope this topic can be of use to youth ministries, family counselors, family devotionals and home evenings.

At a meal, such as thanksgiving, or your Sunday meal, put 3 beans on each empty plate. At the beginning of the meal have each person share 3 things they are grateful for. Go around the table until everyone has a turn. You can use other objects if you wish but the principal is still the same.

This is a great example of teaching gratitude.

Bad:    Philodelopha

Good: Philadelphia

Trying to find a mnemonic for this is challenging so maybe I’ll concentrate upon the differences or seminaries between the two. I seem to the cap letters PHILaDELoPHia correct. The problems is with the cap letters: philAdelOphIA.

Here is one idea. Think of the A sounds. philAdelpniA. Then I just need to remember the I in front.

Have a better suggestion? Please feel free to share.

Partnerships in service:

At church today I heard a delightful object lesson on compassion, so I thought that would be the topic of today’s blog. I hope this can be of use to youth ministries, family counselors, family devotionals and family home evenings.

Lesson: get access to a knitted sweater, a ball of yarn and two knitting needles. May on the internet look up how to knit and then show your class or family the how to knit. Or maybe just watch it so that you can see how knitting is done. If you ant you could use two chopstick as examples of knitting needles. Here is one how to knitting site (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONVQCK_-rKc) Help a class member or family member start to knit with the two needles.

Compare how the two needles are necessary to knit, one requires the other. This can be compared to our service to someone else. One needle could represent our Savior and the other each of us. We work in union with the savior following his recommendations to help others. We act in partnership with Christ to serve others. Take a needle  away and we’re not able to knit.

The two needles combined make a great working partnership in helping others each of us and Christ.

If you don’t get the job:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I heard some very good advice about job searching tonight. When we go to a job interview, the company hiring is looking for a very specific knife/person. They may be looking for a butter knife or a steak knife. We may not get hired because we are not the specific knife they are looking for. We are knives that will work for other employers who are looking for knives who we are.

So not getting hired, don’t not necessarily mean we ae not a good catch. We are just not the specific brand they’re looking for.

I thought that was good advice to remember.

What piece of advice would you give to someone looking for a job? Please give your feedback in the comment section of this blog.

Spelling consistent:

Bad: consistant.

Good: consistent

Coming up with a mnemonic for the spelling of this word is a bit of a challenge. It’s the TENT part of the word I have a hard time getting correct How about this: Let’s say that a bunch of people who consistently vote on certain issues the same way. Therefore they stand under the same tent of certain policies. That may be one idea.

I’ve very open to a better idea of how you remember the Tent in con-sis-tent.  A second observation on this word is that its three words into one: con sis tent.
