Here are more notes on a great panel at Life the Universe and Everything SF/F symposium. The topic is on today’s writers market.

Here are some ways of how to get you noticed in today’s market:
a. Make good books. The cream always rises to the top.
b. Get yourself a presence, so people can find you. When you visit stores, you can establish a positive relationship with the staff. Make friends with them and they will promote your work while you’re not there
c. Your book must contain good editing, and good format be a professional and hire professionals to help you work with the best it can be.
– Start a newsletter. This can let people hear from you. Frequently, and your reward them for signing up. For example, you might give away a free e-book.

The fix may actually need to take place in a different part of the book than the area where the editor pointed out. The editors make mistakes to
– The different places you can publish are the presses, small presses on your own. The nice thing about small presses is that the publishers see that as a way to see what authors might be good for their publishing house.

– Agents are good for managing foreign rights. Some authors make more money. Internationally, then, with their books locally in nine states. If you want your agent shopping, a good convention to attend is world fantasy. Often 20 to 60 agents will go to that convention. If you get accepted by a publisher. It’s much easier to find an agent because I have to do is call them up saying, I’ve got a contract, and do you want to represent me.
– One source said that the YA audience will only want to read 50K length books.

Grief Journaling, Guest blog by Lynnell Christensen:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I have enjoyed various blogs done by Lynnell and thought this would be a good one to share. At the bottom, check out her web site and bio.

Grief journaling is a technique I created to help me deal with the death of someone that I loved deeply. I did not seem to be able to cry or to talk about my loss and I was sliding into misery and despair.

About this same time I heard the psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal interviewed on the subject of dealing with trauma. He said that trauma victims have the need to tell their story, not just once, but over and over again. And that they need to tell it in a different way each time.

So I decided to write about my loss, using this idea of telling the story repeatedly, but differently each time. I found that it worked extremely well. It was a gentle, effective way to release sorrow and lift depression.

This is how I practiced grief journaling:

1) I chose a sad or traumatic experience.

2) I got an inexpensive, spiral bound notebook and start writing about the experience.

3) I did not allow myself to write more than one sentence per day. More than that was too painful, but I could manage one sentence.

4) After several days, I had written a short paragraph. That was when I stopped and started over on another page. I wrote about the same events, but used different words.

5) After several more days I finished that paragraph too.

6) I returned to the first page and started writing again, continuing to tell about the tragedy that had I had experienced. But always, just one sentence per day. And at the end of each paragraph I stopped, moved to the second page and described the same events over again—using different words.

7) I continued in this manner until I had described the tragedy completely at least two times.

8) I didn’t go back and read over what I wrote. In fact, I may decide to discard it. It was the writing process that seemed to be important, not the finished product.

Because this is such a slow process, it took me over a year to describe the trauma that I was feeling. But I experienced immediate relief—from the first day that I wrote the first sentence. My depression started to lift and I began to feel that I could cope with my grief.

From time to time, the depression would return. Every time this happened, I realized that I had forgotten to write each paragraph two times. Apparently, repetition is an extremely important part of the process. When I went back and started rewriting the experience, my depression would again lift.

I am not a therapist or a psychologist, so I do not feel I can prescribe grief journaling for anyone else. But it has been so helpful to me, that I thought I should share it. You can decide for yourself if it is something that you would like to try.

Making Ideas Original:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Here are more notes on a great panel at Life the Universe and Everything SF/F symposium. The topic is on making ideas original

– You can use an old idea and simply twisted one example might be that there is a group of girls are playing D&D and a boy comes in and day 13. The group.
– Some trends of the no such as vampires and zombies
– There are two ideas that can make a story. Being original is one. It was entertaining or two if it makes the reader think of an old idea of a completely new way. One example is avatar. You go into a coffin and you wake up and in a new body. You can ask yourself how that can be used in another way of an avatar new situation. When I did it was discussed was to have cruise ship that has no humans on it. If avatars. And people can go on vacation when they go to bed. An alternative idea is that you have avatars as gladiators and you participate in the games.
– Perspective can help refresh an old idea. For example, many romantic movies touch upon a triangle. Twilight had Bella with a well was or a vampire. Nicholas Sparks is famous for triangle plot lines.
– Plot: have a game is becoming quite the craze of where people are exploding volcano bets and the goal is to get as many humans as possible to get point. Things get created to see how many pretend humans. The latter can get. It mentally prepares society to root for the lab is spitting. Only at the end of the story. Do you realize that the city is gonna be destroyed by exploding, except rooting for the volcano. And the people had to be mentally prepared to do it. Only certain number can escape and this is done to prevent chaos.
– Book pillars of the Earth gave very graphic images of rate environments. We don’t have to be graphic. You still share the concept and threat. You can begin the process and that a reader’s imagination fills in the details and specifics.
– Apple only creates their products for Apple users and not for non-Apple users. Apple users have learned to use visual cues to help with the different functions are of Apple’s
– One twist of a story might be pride and prejudice and zombies. Unique plots are geared to create a mental shift twilight was a new twist of vampires and the aches of high school life
