Choosing a point of view character Part one

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Here is more great writing advice from Life, the Universe, and Everything. The theme of the presentation is choosing a point of view character part 1.

  • Like to have a general outline of who the character is. Age, past,
  • A character must always be changed and changing something.
  • One choice of point of view would be a character that fits the genera.
  • Is your character strong enough to carry an entire book?
  • In a scene: which character is going to have the greatest emotional climax.
  • The person is the principal party of the action. Even though they may resist but you keep building pressure until they become the person of action.
  • Who is the most interesting person to read about or will respond in an interesting way?
  • 3ed person, maybe comes from about 3 characters (for military) chose the character who has the most interesting perspective for that scene. Who has the most emotional impact?
  • What attitudes should a point of view character possess that warrant them to be the point of view character? What do you want to accomplish in the scene?
  • Characters need to be interesting. Anything that makes that reader where the read her huh? And they want to read more.
  • Point of View character can be interesting by making them distinct. If a character can’t predict their actions by past behavior then character feels flat.
  • Interesting is having an internal conflict within. Especially if it considers on the outer conflict. Hopefully, you’re rooting for them.
  • Strong, one character makes a decision. Don’t have your character be a leaf on the wind. The character is the wind. I’m going that way.
  • Fantasy loth the farm boy who is destined to be king. Love character who could easily be the villain depending upon the point of view. Likes people who are objectively terrible. Readers can understand why they did what they did.
  • Some authors will have a section of the book where they see the point of view of the villain. Denial Abraham: fantasy series. Ie: dagger and the point.
  • The challenge of writing villains, you can lose some of the mystery of that villain.
  • Villains are the hero of their own story.
  • To write a character write them so that they are different. A character over blows anything uses long sentences and words. That is her type of personals.
  • Go over the scene with a character’s quires; write the style that goes with them.
  • Your villain scene needs to add something that is new.
  • Keep in mind what people want to read. Readers dropped out of Dune when the author had character rape boys who looked like Paul.

How to deal with conflict Part 1:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

At the toast master’s conference, A presenter talked about resolving conflicts. He does it professionally. I had his name but I spelled it so badly that I couldn’t tell what it is.

  • There things we learn in Toast Masters that transfer to the professional stage
  • The professional stage is every time you meet someone.
  • Transitions in a speech are always important because it lets you know what to do next.
  • When someone gets in your face. Ask them a question where they answer a yes. Then listen to their answer to see where they’re coming from.
  • One we think we know everything, progress ceases.
  • In conflict resolution, you need to determine how they are feeling.
  • Conflict transportation: needs to be willing to hold someone else barf bag (let them pour out their vile of anger.
  • In a project when a member is angry, it shows they care about the results.
  • When an angry person confronts you, grow do you respond? The recipient asks’ what’s going on? So they can communicate. Listen what they are saying, thinking and feeling.
  • Instinct, intuition, and intellect; Instinet for survival are for success intuition is for what you yourself know what is true in the soul of you.
  • When creating a connection, you have your stories.
  • Nervousness to go on the stage is caused by you focusing on self. If you focus on helping your audience you can’t be nervous. What are you bringing to them or can help him?

More will be coming next week

Going beyond the cliché

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Here is more great writing advice from Life, the Universe, and Everything. The theme of the presentation is Going beyond the cliche.

  • Within the plot: <Horror> using genre troupes: college kids go to a cabin in the woods and die. Run by a scientist. The team says don’t split up. Drugs in the system make them think differently and the split up.
  • When you present a story or a series, your readers are expecting a formula. Buffy: is a monster a week formula. May have a variety to be an original idea. Buffy TV show as a musical still follows formula by having a musical.
  • A remake of Much To Do About Nothing: pierce weeden. Josh weeden. The story opens with a nightstand as the beginning. The backstory changes the way we viewed the story.
  • horrible: tells the story as a musical.  And he tells the story as a blog.
  • When you tell a story you want to involve the audience but you want to involve yourself. It can til reflect with the modern time that taps into both times. Or your unique perspective.
  • TV show, Angle, has some good examples of uniqueness YouTube has scenes to watch.
  • Readers that expect a formula you want to escalate the story and make it better.
  • Firefly: when our main characters want to arrange a return payment first guy rejects the refund. they kill him. Next guy accepts the refund
  • If you use a cliché use if for a reason. If our’ going to use a cliché; the make put a unique twist on it like a bad guy wears polish.
  • A good example of using a cliché is in the incredible. Villain says. You caught me monolog again.
  • You can have where a certain switch is expected to go and you have it go a different direction.
  • With each character, everyone has a secret. Another person has something they don’t want know but it could go back to the story.
  • You could flesh out their backstory to see why they’re motivated.]
  • Make them evolve into something.
  • Make stereotype characters be your own.
  • The more secrets you give your character. We get new secrets in every single book. People love a slow reveal. Some secrete can be fun.
  • Make sure your villains believe in what they are doing.
  • Make familiar character stereotype your own. Make characters just people.
  • Terry Pratchett: give a cliché a reason to be there. Heroes always let the villain escape. Provides job security. Villains have to hire dumb hirelings. Get higher rated by dumb followers. Check out the book: the last hero.
  • On Angel tv show, Harvengere is the guy who shares a warning. Harvenger is still on speakerphone.
  • Arms dealer: made him like a businessman: regular office factory is below. Pictures of a family on the desk. He offers candy to visitors. I only work with the head of your company.
  • There are YouTube videos of clichés.

The pure fun of Toastmasters

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

At the fall toastmaster’s conferee I took notes on the virtues of toastmasters by Previous President Michael Natori:

  • Growing while having fun
  • Focus: our energies
  • Undertake to commit. Try to each distinguish objectives.
  • Notice: we grow when we become self-aware.
  • As an international President got to see the club as an international organization.
  • See people develop their skills and advance in other ways.
  • People in prison have a problem with communication.
  • Each club has something unique and fun to offer.
  • Toastmasters can help people realize the dreams in their lives.
  • Different people come into a club for a different reason.
  • Having mentors helped members progress.
  • Consider charting a new club. It involves all our skills.
  • Set a goal of what you want out of this organization. Focus on your goal. Notice and reflect every step of the way.

Do you have something to add? If yes, please do so in the comment section of this blog. If not Toastmasters, what organization has helped you and How?
