Adversity

These are notes from a church meeting. Any inaccuracies are the fault of the note taker.

– In the book of Mosiah king Benjamin: retain a remembrance of God and our own nothingness.
– Another prophet identifies himself as a rich(?) man.
– Alma: God remembered his sins. He was racked with eternal torment.
– Sometimes today, we can see what God expects of us. We see that there is an immense distance between what we need to be and what we are.
– If we face sins, we continually submit to or fall short of our expected lives, what do we do?
– Maintain a correct perspective. Some quit trying. Story of William Tell. A governor put a hat on a pole and made the people bow on it they passed. Some may see the commands that way. The commandments are more than that. Repent and God will receive you.
– Think of the commandments as n invitation.
– View the commandments of what we can become. They can show us what we can become when we follow them.
– The commandments can make us more.
– Hold onto Christ and the iron rod.
– Man in Africa, Sun Jatta, the greatest emperor that Africa ever knew. He didn’t walk until he was six. He was promised to be the lion king. Son felt bad about being the cause of others’ pain. Gets an iron rod and stands with an iron rod.
– 1 Nephi 15: what meaning the rod of iron: Nephi: the rod of God
– Helaman 5:3 A Nephi: hold onto the rod of God.
– Repent
– Forgive others when they try to repent.
– We’ve all come short of the glory of god or became what we should be. Christ does not save us from our sins or in our sins.
– Christ has the power to redeem us from our sins that will enable us to become something more.
Notes from another talk on adversity
– Premortal life we know we would face adversity. Life would be hard. We have trials and sickness but we were eager to come.
– the prophet, Job, was perfect who feared God. After all of his things were taken away, he still had faith in God. After the trial, he gained twice as much as before.
– A boy in Peru went to mission home with only the clothes on his back. His family who objected to him going had burned his suitcases. Hae went anyway. He was as happy for the chance to be there in the mission home.
– God knows what we need, we need to push through.
