Presentation by Steven Smoot: -The 2nd great awakening. These are notes at the Book of Mormon conference and about how the Native American culture was squashed. Any inaccuracies are the fault of the note taker.

– Outcomes: documentary. Research shows a single role of family influence on the development of a nation.
– If children have an hour of religious instruction an hour a day it will influence their self-esteem.

– Is history important for a nation and family?
– Scripture is a form of history.
– 1800: revolutionary idea occurred changed history. Prominent in western NY. Discussed Indian policies and evolution. They served to silence western history. Also known as the hellfire district because of all the sermons. Also political and religious forces. Influence how we value an ancient civilization and view the family. Referred to as the second great awakening. The first great awaking was martin Luther king.
– One theory was that the Native Americans were more highly civilized.
– Legrand Richards and others > case for the book of Mormon. These authors pointed out that Joseph Smith had concerns about how The Book of Mormon would be received.
– David Whitmer witness of the Book of Mormon. When we were first told to publish our statements/ testimony. Felt sure that the people would not believe it. Because the book of Mormon told of a people who lived in a large city. Lord told us we would discover the evidence of the truth in that book.
– Former director of the Smithsonian: evidence of a higher advanced civilization. Hidden cities in 1994. Roger Kenney: influenced by what he found artifacts in caves.
– There are thousands of earthworks and mounds have been destroyed. Thousands still exist.
– Ancient of the Mississippi valley book from the Smithsonian.
– The similarity of the works shows evidence of a central government.
– Johnson mackintosh: ruling of jury> only can occupy the land but not own lad as they are not fully human. Led to the Indian removal act.
– Dec and 32 dc have elders of the church serving missions to the Lamanites.
– Missionaries went to visit Indians and shared. One chief wanted them to come back in the spring but then was prohibited by the government from coming back.
– Mound city national park: had different earthworks. > Army core of engineers cleared out the ancient monuments. John wetly Powel named behind the removal

– Manifest destiny: American first nations never created anything of worth. Resulting in the destruction of evidence of Native American high level of civilization.
– Pattern of obviations of American history> the constitution emphasized a new beginning.
– Westy Powel became a folk hero. Powel’s father was a Methodist minister in NY when the book of Mormon came out.
– Powel influence that 50 of Utah land owned by the federal government.
– Powel had an interest in Daoism.
– Morgan inspired west
– Powel could use it for social evolution.
– Evolution seeds children as another animal. Marriage is just tradition and you can redefine marriage as you redefine family.
– Powel doctrine: limit of some anthropological site.
– Powel hired Cyrus Thomas) became the last word of mound build cultures. He identified different locations. Concentrated along waterways of the American heartland and mining areas.
– Cultures always sought metal.
– Some of the pure copper is in Michigan. Wisconsin, Georgia and so Idaho.
– Eastern ok> spiral mound site > over 100 archers of land found large quantities of refined copper.
– William h homes: did a report to Smithsonian. A review of the graves shows archeological inhabitants were skillful with metals. Evidence of a long, continued culture. Common ornaments of gold and copper were prominent.
– 1500 BC list of migrations. To 400 ad people centered on metal-rich areas.
– Ancient Indian slaves were exchanged between North to South America. Some tribes held war captives.
– A lot of earth construction of earth mounds was done by slave labor.
