These are notes taken from a Toastmasters’ meeting.

– What is culture? Culture is a collection of beliefs and ideas that we learn consciously and subconsciously. Today we are going to review cross culture. She just booked a trip to Panama for her job.
– Attendees were given hidden objects and try to define them by smell. Fawn – 4″ square 1.5″ deep, smells yummy. caramel in it. Traci – From Walmart. Opened so something in it. slightly warm. It would be good on the counter for a long time. They tied it to stereotypes.
– Their comments were based on what they saw on the outside. They have taken the items out. When they slip it out, Traci shows off a cookie and fawn shows her cookie.
– When you want to cross barriers, you have to be culturally aware.
– Once out of the box, they realized that they were wrong.
– Once you step out of the country you realize that stereotypes are wrong.
– After taking a bite of her cookie, fawn says she tastes vanilla, lemon.
– Traci tastes chocolate pumpkin, cinnamon.
– They have come to realize that the cookies are different. This shows diversity amongst the cookies.
– Another thing you can tie into this is values and beliefs.
– To break past barriers, be culturally aware, understand that there is diversity amongst those types of people, understanding values and beliefs are a great way to break past the barriers.
