Here are some notes from a preparedness fair I attended. This presentation was given by Bob carry. Any inaccuracies are the fault of the note taker.

– Looking at earthquakes from a casualty point of view.
– Hazard versus risk: risk is when something is important.
– The Wasatch fault is about 290 miles long.
– An earthquake can interfere with supply chains like taking down the spaghetti bowl.
– Now from 72 hr check to 120 hr check.
– Earthquake effect on the health care system: hospital 3 hospitals closed after the CA earthquake
– Structure older than 1975 has an unreinforced mastery structure > more vulnerable to earthquake.
– Liquefaction: ground shaking water from in-depth can come to the surface.
– Impairment of hospitals: assuming at least moderate damage. A hospital that has moderate damage cannot be used.
– Nontraditional causality sources:
– The water system was gone and can’t take care of fires.
– Fire following: fire will start a chain reaction
– Challenge of apartments and high density is also subject to fire following.
– As people build homes into wood areas.
– Hazard material: industrial areas,
– Flooding: broken water main.
– A high hazard dame is one that has people below it.
– Areas up the mountainside have water storage that saves water for the dry month of Aug.
– Building: buildings with masonry the face of the building falls off. Comes out into the street. This is why you don’t run out of a building.
– If stuck outside best to move away from the structure. Keep away from falling objects
– Don’t get to an exterior wall.
– Duck, cover and hold indoors.
– A most likely injury is crashing injury.
– Youtube: Christ church new England videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XyXR0MN19Q
– More likely to be injured not from collapse building but to what’s going inside.
– Falling objects from ceiling air conditions falling objects mean get under a sturdy object.
– Triangle of life: go. Get between table and pile of a tree.
– Get under a sturdy table.
– Go under a doorway
– 1.3 million People in Salt Lake
– 2.57 million will be affected. We only have sheltering for 65K.
– Inside of Utah, 8% go to care centers. Outside of Utah 10%. Why low for Utah has food at home. Or have places to go.
