Some candidates don’t have an issues page on their website. Here is mine:
Limited Government
I support a return to limited government under the U.S. Constitution. We must cut federal spending and balance the budget. The federal government should not be involved in universal health care, education, housing, and welfare. Let’s return power to the States and the people.
Constitutional Rights
Our nation was founded on the self-evident truth that all people are endowed by God with the rights to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. The proper role of government is to protect these rights, so the people can govern themselves.
I support the unborn child’s right to life. To protect life, we must de-fund Planned Parenthood and appoint judges who will overturn Roe v Wade.
I will oppose all government efforts to infringe on our Constitutional rights, including our 1st Amendment rights to free speech and religious freedom and our 4th Amendment right to privacy.
I support our God-given and 2nd-Amendment-protected right to bear arms for protection against crime and tyranny and will not support any gun control measures. I favor personal responsibility and encourage individuals to protect themselves, their families, and their communities through safety preparations and training and concealed or open carry.
National Defense
I support a strong national defense, in the tradition of President Ronald Reagan, and a foreign policy of non-interventionism, as established by President George Washington. Our military must be strong enough to deter all threats, but we should stay out of foreign wars, unless waged in defense of our nation and our allies.
Health Care Freedom
The federal government should not be regulating our health care decisions. Allowing insurance companies to compete across state lines and removing coverage mandates is the best way to reduce premiums and improve options and services. We must fully repeal ObamaCare and return to the long-lost days of free markets in health care and insurance.
Illegal Immigration
I support legal immigration reforms that will open America’s doors to the best and brightest who want to work, study, and live here, while keeping out terrorists and criminals. Our current chain migration and visa lottery programs should be replaced with a merit-based system.
I support securing our borders with a wall, where needed, and a fully-funded and staffed Border Patrol. We should aggressively enforce our border and employment laws and cut funding for sanctuary cities. I oppose amnesty for those who have entered or remained in our nation illegally.
Public Lands and Energy
I will fight for the return of our public lands to State and private ownership. I support multiple uses of our public lands for recreation, ranching, drilling, and mining and will oppose restrictions on access to our natural resources. We can achieve energy independence by opening up our lands to responsible uses.
Education
Parents should control their children’s education through school choice options at the local level. I oppose ESSA (and Common Core) and will work to de-fund it and to eliminate the federal Department of Education.
Religious Values
I support prayer, traditional marriage, and the right of all people to practice their religion as they believe fit within the constraints of the law.

Issues: These are questions delegates are wanting to ask the candidates when they meet them. We are on a shared page to discuss candidates.

  • recent spending bill
  • been for or against SB54?
  • you think about the Department of Education?
  • “War on Drugs”?
  • stand on immigration? DACA? Building the wall?
  • what prepares and qualifies you as one of 100 US Senators, and one of only 2 representing Utah?
  • How about questions that discover the character of the candidate, his/her integrity to Consttutional principles, how they make decisions. Can they handle stress? Do they surcome to group thinking or are they principlabled. What are they willing to compromise in order to get what they want?
I asked Michael S. Lee a question once that I think encapuals all of these. It is this: Tell me of a time in your life that you had a difficult decision to make. What principles did you use to make the decision and what process to come to a conclusion? What was the result?
  • What books or other materials have you studied that have shaped your political philosophies?
  • The Gainful Employment Act
  • “why are you running for office” (hoping for specifics as to problems you would like to remedy versus a general politicians response)
  • What are your views about them?
  • candidate’s reasons for not participating on this page and Mitt Romney’s reason in particular
  • if you could wave a wand and make our tax system however you want it
  • raising the federal minimum wage.
  • thoughts on medical cannabis?
  • Many times in deliberative bodies, one is confronted with a choice between voting their principles by either: 1) sticking to their idea of a “perfect” scenario and not budging on a proposal that falls shy of that; or 2) voting for a “partial win” by compromising with a proposal that at least allows their position to be partially influential in a vote, particularly when recognizing the majority won’t support a “perfect” scenario. In the former, the elected representative stands firm for an absolute value. I’m the latter, the representative realizes some success albeit partial, but is able to still maintain influence.
  • Which way would you describe your philosophy when approaching votes in a body of broad representation (1, 2, or another)? And how would you present your constituency’s wishes if in the minority during a vote?Article V Convention? And why?
  • Do you feel term limits would be a good or bad thing for House and Senate representatives?
  • Why do YOU deserve a taxpayer-funded paycheck and retirement?
  • What would you do to make the current job market and jobs available to Utah residents more appealing to keep good people from leaving our state for “greener pastures”?
  • If you had to choose between keeping all current planned parenthood locations open OR closing ALL planned parenthood locations which would you choose?
  • Are you in favor of a national E-varify law?
  • What are you going to do to make sure the BLM is working for Utah residents and not federal or outside special interest groups?
  • Before Obamacare, we were able to use our HSA to purchase over the counter medication. What are you going to do to return Americans health care freedoms to pre Obamacare levels?
  • In your 2002 gubernatorial campaign, you said on camera
  • “I think people recognize that I’m not a partisan Republican, that I’m someone who is moderate, and my views are PROGRESSIVE”
  • Do you still consider your views as progressive?
  • What is going to convince us you aren’t just telling Utah’s what they want to hear?
  • Do you believe in anthropogenic global warming?

Notes on candidates:

Lisa’s notes on Mitt Romney: https://lindon04precinctdelegatepoliticalponderings.wordpress.com/2018/03/25/meeting-mitt

tyler: several

Interesting “Meet the Candidates” event at Layton High this evening! It was really a great opportunity to ask some questions and hear some answers from the candidates. Mitt Romney gave a great speech and is certainly a viable choice as a candidate with political clout and connections that would do well for Utah. While I support his approach and stance on limited federal government overreach and empowering the states, his integrity is in question a bit for me. Mitt spoke such inflammatory things about Trump during the election and then interviewed for the Secretary of State position in Trump’s administration. Romney’s campaign also illegally obtained state delegate contact information ahead of other senate candidates as ousted by the UTGOP after all candidates made an oath of some kind to be fair. I am also really liking Mike Kennedy, a humble physician with some good ideas and relevant experience he could bring. Mike kind of reminds me of Senator Mike Lee when he ran. Thoughts?

Sylvia: notes on mitt:

Want to know how Mitt will govern? Here’s how he governed in Massachusetts? 1) Mitt instituted a health care plan for his state which was endorsed by Hillary Clinton,Ted Kennedy and Planned Parenthood which Obamacare was modeled after. It did increase access to insurance and health care to the insured but reduced access for the remaining uninsured. Also, health care costs greatly increased under Romney care and continued to skyrocket. Before, costs were $1 billion and in 2014 Massachusetts overall health spending jumped to $54 billion. 2) Mitt signed a $50 tax-subsidized abortion bill 2 years after he said that he was pro-life. 3) Mitt increased taxes and fees by close to a billion dollars and opposed the Bush Tax-cuts. 4) Mitt supported the McCain-Feingold “campaign finance reform”, McCain-Kennedy “comprehensive immigration reform” and parts of the McCain-Lieberman “carbon cap and trade” bill. This list is just a few of his liberal stances. Mitt is no conservative by a long shot.
