At Life the Universe and Everything symposium, there was a panel on map making. In inaccuracies is the fault of the note taker.

  • Terrain will influence travel time.
  • Mountains and deserts can create the own obstacles
  • Terrain always influences the type of close the characters where.
  • Map will tell reader what is important to the author
  • You need to determine realistic expectations of how long it takes to travel and modes of travel.
  • Paths are not straight lines.
  • Maps are created for two audiences. The first is the mat maker why did they create the map. The second is for the reader
  • Check out the book the Atlas of fantasy maps.
  • Maps touch upon geological features and borders. They can also tell you the towns in the distance between them.
  • A map is about directions.
  • Today we describe directions by Miles but before the Miles it was by landmarks.
  • Some maps such as those for city will be displayed resources by layer. One layer may show the plumbing and sewage, another layer may show the electrical lines. Another layer may show streets or homes etc.
  • The names of places come from natural reasons for example one time someone saw an eagle on a rock they call the town eagle rock.
  • Why is the author doing a map? To help keep directions and to keep the world organize. Don’t spend too much time on it. It could just be a sketch of necessary.
  • When the tonic plates collide you get Mountains. Nothing shapes the land more than water.
  • Their programs on the web some of them free that will help you create a map.
  • Geography will influence populations.
  • Water changes geography and influences trade, farming, and influences where people live
