Church is to fix the comfortable:

I hope this object lesson can be of use to church ministries, Sunday schools, family devotionals or family home evenings.

I heard an interesting quote today at church/conference. I see it as a variant of the quote that “church is for the sinners”. A lot of times we as people become comfortable with our lives and might even feel that would doing good simply by going to church. But if we are attendant to the sermons and teaching shared at church and if we try to apply them in our lives we will have plenty of opportunity to still recognize our shortcomings.

One way I see that many people use to apply the Scriptures to him or herself is that he or she will put their name directly into the Scriptures. So when one of the apostles is speaking to the saints as in Chronicles or Christ is speaking to a center or an apostle teaches on the principle we have the Scriptures show us is essential recipient of this. By putting our names into the Scriptures we can better envision the sermons and Scriptures talking specifically to us and encouraging us to be more self-reflective and thus we can be encouraged to improve.

Objects for this lesson:

Place clean dishcloth on a flat surface and talk about how smooth it is. Next place some sugar or other seasoning underneath the cloth. Place the cloth back on top and rub against it and you can begin to notice the small imperfections beneath. It is not too bad so we become comfortable with the slight irregularities of the cloth and continue to live our lives like normal.

Now lift the cloth and put raw oats underneath it. Cover up the debris and rub against the increasing lumpy material. It is still not too bad, so, we continue to live our lives as we normally do.

You continue to deposit bigger and bigger items underneath the cloth until finally, the cloth is so lumpy the contents beneath it that we begin to realize that the shortcomings we need to be addressed.

Church can help us recognize those lumps.

If you have other ways you can use these object lessons please feel free to do so thanks.
