Basic elements of romance:

Went to presentation by Heather B. Moore. Here are my notes.

  • At the pleasant Grove library, they have an author. There once a month and tonight they had Heather be more. She is a romance writer and here are the notes I took my presentation.
  • The main plot revolves around the love between two people and the obstacles they have to overcome.
  • Romance has a happy ending, where the characters find true love.
  • Many romances, markets/publishers have strict guidelines.
  • Single title romance is a standalone book.
  • A romance is a book that is completely dependable upon the romance in the plot. Otherwise, it will fall apart.
  • Some genres of romance: romantic suspense, contemporary romance (1950 or later) nostalgia romance (1960s or later), a Roddick romance (explicit physical activity). With erotica when you post these books on online markets, you have to state 18+ of age. Historical romance (1940) inspirational romance (clean/sweet romance) religious romance (God, religion is a central component of the romance), mystery/suspense/thriller:
  • Mystery romance has three categories.

Ministry is who did the crime,

Suspense, try to prevent a crime from occurring,

Thriller is like suspense, but thriller involves global or planetary consequences.

  • Why a romance is when the character is under 19. Remember that kids want to read up two years older than their own age. Most YA readers are between 16 to 17 years old.
  • New adult are is when the character is between 20 to 30. It was once was called chick lit. It was also once called romantic comedy, but now new adult.
  • Clean romance is nothing beyond PG in language and nothing graphic while Christian romance is also clean but has a religious component.
  • As you go to a bookstore before you write try to determine where in the bookstore your book would belong some of the categories are historical romance (1811 – 1820). This patient has strict rules of culture and social conventions. Scottish romance represents characters of that nation. Medieval romance early 1800s. Historical romance, the stories of the West Cowboys ranches etc. This type of book and also include mail order brides.
  • Popularity of romance in 2013 is seen by the genre earning $1.8 billion. Romance is 13% of the adult fiction market. Romance books are divided up into 39%, e-books, 32% mass-market. (big print} 18% is trade paperback. 9% hardcover. 1%, audiobooks. The most prominent age of romance readers range between the aged 30 to 54
  • How to write romance:

If romance is a site theme of the book. You don’t have to and with the characters becoming the own true love. Maybe just a kiss our first date could satisfy the reader.

Boy and girl must meet early in the book.

Something brings them together.

Something causes a conflict.

The couple begins to have an attraction.

  • Questions you will want to ask why the character has not gotten married before. What is the characters quirk, so they are not all perfect.
  • Check out the book the Rosie project. This is a story about a college professor who uses logic to find a wife and finds someone completely opposite for what he seeks.
  • What is the conflict that keeps the characters apart?
  • How will the couple overcome their conflict?
  • Writing that awkward kissing scene: It’s important to involve the five senses which are touch, smell, sight, taste hearing. They need to have pleasant associations. You’d want to touch about the anticipation, the smell feeling of a heartbeat fingers in the hair hands across the arm whispered words reluctant 1430 some of the phrases and images you’d want to share.
  • The relationship is the most important part of a romance. In a romance, you need to have a steady progression of the developing romance. Do not skip. Readers want the details and the gradual advancement of the relationship. Show the evolution of when the couple begins to find feelings for each other.
  • Self-publishing is not as a means that can let you publish a lot of material the shore. Of time as publishing hard copy takes time to go through all the process.
  • Some authors will restrict the contracts to the publishers for a certain type of book. Where some authors can do novel was outside of the realm of the contract to their publisher.
