Good: League
Bad: Leage

I keep forgetting the U in leagUe. Maybe if I think leagUe as a Unit of players or athletic teams it will help. I’ll try that until I come up with something better.

Obsessive Outlining

These are notes I took from a wonderful writing symposium called Life, the Universe, and Everything. We have a lot of talented people in Utah and visitors with a great deal of knowledge.

Any Misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

– Publish under initials M.A. Nicoles.
– Find out what works for you is to try different things and try it and see what works for you.
– The process takes 4 steps.
Brainstorm> for weeks for outlining.
– The brainstorming outline will range from30-40 pages.
– Each step builds on top of the other.
– It helps with writers’ blogs. Has a hard time what happens next and the outline can tell me where to go.
– You end up writing faster because things have been already figured out what to say.
– Get a more polished first draft. Rarely had to delete a scene. Figure out flaws in the story b\through outline rather than having written
– Brainstorming> batten down the hatches.
– Start with an idea or a character.
– A story about a fairy tale villain consultant. Help villains to succeed.
– You have a what if? Answers question.
– Start figuring out who is going to be in the story.
– Start thinking about what conflicts they have with each other.
– Start to build the world.
– Takes notes about books and movies. Focus on why o like it. And that can give you adapt those ideas in your own books. The more time you spend on analyzing what they did well, the more it can help your writing.
– You can’t rush the brainstorming process.
– The more you brainstorm the more ideas can come.
– Doing things digital and can use google drive and can access them from anywhere.
– There is no such thing as a bad idea. You may not use them. Type them up on put in your digital folder.
– At the end of brainstorming. Want to have identified the main characters in the story. Main players, heroes, villains, the point of view characters.
– Plot outline and character arcs (the sources of all the conflict and resolution.)
– Who is going to change in the book?
– End result: Main plotlines and character arcs. Worldbuilding: magic system and history that will affect the story.

2. Plot beats.
Hit the key elements of your story that forms the structure of your book.
– 25% of the book does this and at 50% point of the book does this.
– Basic moments in the story that will make the book feel complete.
– Set up a plot sheet for each main plot. And have one subplot and maybe two-character arches and map them out. Each will get their own sheet.
– Plot pint will be where the character is starting out.
– What is the conclusion? Have scenes to answer these questions.
– Plot beats:
– even point structure
– Each plotline and character arc gets its own sheet.
– End result:
– Tent pole moments identified to form the skeleton of your story.
– Not detailed – only a few sentences for each point.

3. Integrate:
– Time to weave the 5 different plot points character arc and pots.
– Put each plot point and color code it.
– All the bullet points are the storyline.
– The main plotline first and then see where the scenes can meet up. Some plot points can happen at the same point.
– Be careful that you don’t get plot points out of order. Each bullet point is an individual scene.
– Different plots and arcs can be shared in the same scene.
– Not all brainstorming ideas can be used.
– Start filling in transition scenes to build up the new scene.
– Color coding can help you identify if too long since the last addressed a certain plotline.

4. Expand
– Go through each scene and add details and storyboard it in their mind. Write details point of view character. List character motivations.
– Will know that certain points need to be hit this is where I catch plot holes and character inconsistencies.
– Focus setting food dialog

Finding your “right” way

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

These are notes from a toastmasters’ meeting

Have you ever felt there should be a manual of daily living? Practical things? The right way? The proper way to replace toilet paper. What shapes our attitudes about the right way?
The way we are raised.
She is a Tide and Downy girl because grandma said they were the best. Only drives foreign cars because her grandfather said they are the best.
How do we decide the right way? What do we do when we discover our right way isn’t right at all. When used to strive towards the ideal of perfection. What do we believe and what do we want out of life?
Three simple practices.
1) Gain new knowledge and combine it with the old. How do you decide what works for you? Room to experiment.
2) Try different practices. Maintain an open mind to new ideas. Use philosophy until you don’t need it. Your beliefs will evolve. Practice new ideas with no judgment. “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind, always.” –Ian McClaren. We will bumble about our journey. We can draw line in the sand as much as we want to. We pay a self-imposed penance for wrongdoing, but instead, cut ourselves some slack. Acknowledge negative thoughts and move on.
3) Have a sense of humor and laugh at yourself. Kinder to self and avoid self-judgment. Give up the idea of perfection and will gain the confidence to laugh at self. Even when mistakes seem unforgivable. Can venture into the unknown.
Be willing to open mind to new possibilities. Relinquish self-judgment. Exercise humor and will find the right way.

Recommendations for Orem city council 2019

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Got this email and I know that I’m already voting For Peterson and will consider the other two.

The Case for Change
to
Lambson, Peterson, and Rands

The Orem City Council works very hard to maintain and improve our city, and they accomplish many great things. But as you think back over the past four years, you might find that they also have been lacking.

Have you noticed that they increased taxes, let our first responders and many city workers fall into poor morale, rolled over a bond while linking a new library hall to the rec center renewal, and converted residential neighborhoods into apartment complexes? They developed a new State Street Master Plan with extensive propaganda about the benefits of “mixed use” zones to provide more apartment housing, following recommendations from the state and the Utah League of Cities and Towns, but neglecting to address the impact it will have on traffic or how it will fit in with the changing commercial economy? Have you heard them plan how to fix the increased traffic, renew city management structure, reconstruct the budget, or voice any concerns about UVU growth problems?

A good argument for turnover on City Council is to avoid entrenched interests. There may not be any evidence of misbehavior by City Councilors, but one can’t help but be concerned about the possible lobbying power of big developers who swing whopping big deals like Utopia, the University Place Mall, and the Palos Verdes housing complex. Another is to avoid habituation, tolerance, desensitization, self-satisfaction, and burnout, all of which lead to losing touch with what the citizens want. When this happens, City Council loses track of who they represent.

Even if they give the appearance of economic development for Orem, are they really aiming the City in the direction the citizens want? Might we prefer a future where our neighborhoods are lovely, quiet, pleasant, and residential, rather than the future that makes big money for developers?

And how do we assure that commercial relationships formed by developers with City Council don’t become entrenched and endemic?

By getting new eyes on the issues, new representatives on City Council.

Did you notice that the two incumbents, Lentz and Lauret, teamed up to campaign together this past weekend? They mailed a joint flyer to the Orem residents displaying their mutual support. This is the kind of collusion that concerns us. Lentz and Lauret have almost nothing in common except for a mutual desire to get reelected. Frankly, it brings back nightmares of when the three incumbent councilors and the incumbent mayor campaigned together two years ago, as if the incumbents were all of the same party. Indeed, they are: the party of the citizen-detached developer-entrenched.

We need City Council members that are positive, pro-active with solutions, and engaging with the residents in the community.

Do you want some fresh, neighborhood-friendly ideas, and some gritty city counselors willing to push for wise policies to deal with growth pressures?

Are there any qualified replacements for the incumbents?

YES!!

Consider voting for these three:

1. Jeff Lambson
– an active citizen in the community who listens to the residents.

2. Terry Peterson
– a dynamic life-long resident of Orem who is ready to tackle hard issues.

3. Spencer Rands
– an experienced businessman who digs deep into the issues to come up with solutions.

These three share the same concerns about protecting neighborhoods from high density developers, foolish ventures, mishandling growth pressures, and Orem’s ever-growing traffic issues. They will approach these challenges wisely. They are approachable and will listen to your concerns. Why not vote for folks who will represent Orem citizens?

Experience, family values, listening ears.
Make your vote count.
Vote for change.

Writing a series

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

These are notes I took from a wonderful writing symposium called Life, the Universe and Everything. We have a lot of talented people in Utah and visitors with a great deal of knowledge. Any Misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

Q: two ways to do a series standalone individual story with connecting elements. Or each book is interrelated. Lord of the rings or the Dresden Files.
– Mysteries have a reoccurring story and it can be a bottomless well. Each novel is a new adventure.
– Serialized drama: late arrivals can be lost. Advantages are you leave the reader a bit unsatisfied> reader has to buy the next novel.
– There is a large adult audience for YA. 60-75 of the YA buying audience is adults.
– In children books series have to be fairly limited because your target audience is going to age out of your series. Except for the magic tree house they want to observe. Need a certain shelf space to be noticed. Magic tree the reader wants to catch all of them.
– Harry Potter: wanted kids to grow up with the reader. Maybe just have a trilogy
– Mostly series are different than YA.
– Companion novels are in the same universe but different characters.
Q: when doing a story that is interconnected, How to know when to end a novel?
– Each book is building to something.
– The two most difficult decisions are when to begin and when to end.
– Used to work with Wizards of the coast used to belong series.
– 7 yrs. of Buffy the vampire had one big arch. But each year had their own arc. And episodes have an arc.
– What does your character want in book one? Have some accomplishments in each book but the big goal is achieved only in the last book. Time to close is when the character has obtained what they want a macro objective.
– If you leave your reader unsatisfied, they will never forgive you.
– The macro objective for Hunger Games was not the revolution but the need for a revolution and overcome the citythal.
– The challenge of a series is to educating later books to educate them without the readers from the beginning are not bored.
– Choosing the scene for a new book, it is important and can catch the reader up.
Q: what about cliffhangers popular in series. How did right and wrong?
– If the next book never comes out a reader can be frustrated that they don’t have the answer to the next book.
– On t has to have a min cliff hanger at the end of each scene to motivate the TV viewer to come back. The TV show is battling with advertising, i.e. the viewer eating Doritos.
– Some authors lend in the middle of the scene. It takes a lot of experience in the craft to do that.
– Readers want to have some progress for the character.
– TV is different from novels. When reading a book t its release they will have to wait for a yr. to get the answer to a cliff hanger is not pop0ular. Just provide something that the reader wants to learn from the world, but the world is still broken.
– With a trilogy, how to avoid a sagging middle of book two?
– Give the character something they really want in book two
– Treat every book like you’re writing the last. When you think of a great idea don’t store them up. Use them fill your book with wonderful ideas.
– Introduce new characters that prove vital in your series.
– Be willing to abandon your outline. You created it you can throw it away.
– To avoid a sagging second book be willing to change when new ideas come.
– You need to always be willing to raise the stakes. They need to be up against a whole lot more in book two. Characters face deeper and great challenges as they evolve.
– Book: First Blood by David Morrell. Is the character of Rambo.
– Things that are published are history and are canon. Unpublished is not canon and can be changed.
– When you change an outline if you as a writer are excited about the new version it has the potential of being successful. How to keep characters growing but still keep the things we liked.
– Supernatural is a TV show that does a good job of this.tv show and storytelling that keeps going deeper and keeps raising the stakes but keeps heart is supernatural. (The relationship of the brothers)
– Characters do not always grow. Sometimes a character never grows he just survives.

Q: What is better stand-alone or series?
– The publisher decides on a series. Is influenced by the model of trade houses. They are trilogies. Children’s books are stand-alone. Maybe play in the same world but with different characters.
– We are in the middle of a paper crisis right now. Children’s books and 400 pgs. It is expensive for middle grade.
– If you are querying the first book. And an agent may ask, is there more of a story? Don’t write that second book and if a publisher wants the book then do a standalone. Do one book at a time.
– If a publisher is investing in a debut novel they are investing them in you. They are investing in you.
