He suggested that I look up in our condo reports which condos are used the most and advertise for those condos.

Spelling words Pigeon and Province

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Today’s spelling words are Pigeon and Province. We’ll see if these spelling devices will help me spell the properly in the future.

Pigeon: I remember this that pigeon is an animal and pig is an animal so pig. Then these birds are famous for dropping excrement on people.
Pig e on people
Pig e on = pigeon

Province It’s the middle of the word that messes me up. So, a province is an area of land IN a country. The word IN is the problem area of the word. Prov-IN-ce. We’ll see if that’ll help.

Please feel free to share additional suggestions you what might be a better way to remember the spelling of these word. Leave on the comment section for the blog. Thanks.

The creativity and dimensions behind quilts

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Last Friday I had the chance to visit a quilting display at the Springville museum. There were some delightful quilts and I saw that there are quite a variety of quilts which show a rich display of talent. My mother would do tie quilts and I really love the feel of a warm, homemade and fluffy quilt. My old one wouldn’t be worn out and I’d want a new one. These quilts on the walls of the museum were of the type that they make very nice wall hangings. I’m going to give you some highlights and observations. Since I’ve only done tie quilts, I don’t know the terminology that quilters use so the following is expressed in layman’s terms.

On the three dimensional quilts, I learned there are some delightful ways to add depth to a quilt. I am already aware of layering where one pieces of cloth is sewn on top of the other. What I observed in these quilts were additional ways to obtain depth. On one, someone had done crocheting where there were flower buds that rose off the main surface of the quilt. There was also some delightful use of beads and buttons that would add texture to various quilts. I also enjoyed how the sewing on the material would create tucks and pinches in the material that would contribute to the design. Some quilts had designs sewn on the opposite side where their pattern would show up in the front and be seen by the attentive eye.

My favorite quilt was one I didn’t think was a quilt. A friend and I are walking down the displays and I see a piece of rock art on the wall. I thought they shouldn’t hang rock art amongst the quilts. It’s a distraction. I get up close and realize, my gosh, it’s a quilt! Someone had tucked the shape of various sized rocks as the highest level material on the quilt and then has as a second dimension of smaller pebbles and plant designs leaving dirt as third level. Wow! They looked like real rocks. It was quite impressive.

Some of the designs I had seen before when I’d go to a local fair. But there some of the subject matter was a fish and hook that had various types of silk material to add texture and beads for the hook. There were several paper doll pattern quilts. Also in the collection where some that had the colors of material bleed into one another or dyed colors to merge together. Several were devoted to just the needle work on cloth to provide very complex designs such as one devoted to witches and others that had various homes as their subject matter. There were a lot of square quilts where complex designs were in the squares and they were combined to the less complex area of the quilt that would combine them. Often the area outside the squares would have their own complex designs through the needle work.

Another enjoyable component of the show was the little notes by the quilter. One told about the trail and error in making her quilt. When she realized that something was done backwards, she had to adjust the rest of her quilt accordingly. Several talked about the length of time it took to quilt. Some gave personal stories to their quilts. A King size, tied quilt, can only take a couple of hours when multiple people are working on it (mom and my sisters). But these—would take hundreds of hours to complete. Wow!

It was a very instructional and enjoyable visit. Congrats to the superb talents of the quilters and thanks to the staff who put it together.

Achieving Goals is like many forms of heat

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Today’s topic is achieving goals and comparing them to different forms of heat. I hope today’s object lesson is of use to youth ministries, home devotionals and family home evenings.

Prior to the lesson, go about the house and look for various sources of heat. Our objective will be to compare the traits of goals to those different forms of heat. My current collection is the element of a stove, hair dryer, match and an electric blanket. We can now compare each of these objects to how we achieve different goals. Here are some examples:

The element of stove can get so hot that it not only changes the color from black to red but it can start an object on fire if it gets too close. The older stoves take time to warm up and to cool down. The advantage of this is that if a dish is nearly cooked you can turn off the element and the meal can finish cooking while it cools. Having a setting on high can turn water to boiling; so making an extreme effort toward a goal (increasing the intensity) can help achieve a specific goal quickly. It might take time to warm up to a big goal such as planning. It also takes time to wrap up residue tasks or cool down the stove.

The hair dryer can provide hot air that drys hair quickly. It’s not so hot as to damage the hair if you take appropriate measures. The hair dryer would not be useful to boiling a pan of water. The dryer has a different task. So achieve one specific type of goal would not be accomplished in the same way as a stove. A dryer lets you alter the direction of the heat to up and down or to the side. A lot of times goals need a different approach and it is nice to have flexibility of heat to accommodate that goal.

A match provides a great intensity of heat for only a short time. It is useful in that it is small enough to direct the flame to a candle contained within a cup where a hair dryer or stove could not accomplish the lighting a candle. Some goals require very concentrated effort to achieve them.

An electric blanket is more subtle on its warmth. It is also spread across a wider area. It’s useful in warming an entire bed. Like a blanked some goals are not specific but more general. This could be compared to the direction of one’s life, perhaps becoming a better person, which may be achieved by a day by day effort. A general goal may not be immediate and make take years in getting accomplished. This does not make the goal less useful. It is simply that the intensity is more relaxed and steady to endure the long term. It too has it place.

The hazards of spelling phonetically with an accent

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Here are a few examples of how spelling phonetically can bite you in the butt when you have an accent.

Like various people from around the united states, southern utahans have their unique accent. And since I have a hard time spelling I am often given the advice to spell words phonetically. This can prove to be a challenge when I want to Ts and Rs in areas they don’t belong. For example when pronouncing these two words I put in the following letters: TouTched and WaRshed.

They should be touched and washed. So I offer the following advice to those who give spelling phonetically advice. Help the person with spelling difficulty to concentrate upon the proper pronunciation of the words as phonetically is not always applied in the same way by various people.

By the way when looking up how to spell the lookup feature of Microsoft word led me to a web site: http://howjsay.com/. You can type in a word and it will pronounce it to you. How neat is that?

Once a person asked where I was from and then wondered where I got my accent. I told her I got it as the prize from a cracker-jack box.

Please feel free to give additional advice on how to spell phonetically on the comment section of the blog and if you have some favorite scriptures on the topic, feel free to share them.

Persuasion is like the wind

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I hope today’s object lesson can be of use to youth ministries, family devotionals and family home evenings. The topic is gentle persuasion is like the wind.

Think of various times you have been outside and in the wind. Some days the breeze is gentle and relaxing while other times the gusts are fierce and you have to lean against the wind to stay upright. A calm, persistent and general persuasion can be very much like a gentle wind. People are usually more willing to listen to a different point of view if they’re not being yelled at. Parents and grandparents teach their children/grandchildren not through one discussion but through periods of persistent continual times of instruction and by example.

Following the wind imagery one voice or spurt of wind might not seem to have much impact, but add that to another or another where there are a group of people gathered in common cause. The group have more strength due to the number of its members. So the wind had more strength by its volume.

As a game, blow up a balloon and take turns blowing at it to keep it in the air. Use short bursts of breath and steady breaths of air. Blow at it while you’re close to the balloon or far away. Are there different techniques to move the balloon if it close to the ground verses high in the air? After you play the game discuss the various means of communication and how those means can be compared to gusts of wind and the balloon.
