Opposition to the protagonist:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I came across some typed up notes from a previous session of life universe and everything panel. Here are the notes on writing about, opposition to the protagonist.

  • Consider uncommon forms of opposition for example a handicap.
  • Decide what sort of opposition your character needs. What gives your character nightmares? What or his or her besetting sins and how can you play on them? What is your character trying to escape? Throw him in the middle of it.
  • If there is only an impairment to the protagonist there isn’t much of a story
  • Traditional three: man versus man, man versus nature, man versus self.
  • Opposition equals growth in the physiological or psychological death. Consider growing into the opposition
  • Plot devices should grow originally out of your story. Avoid things that or peer to be coincidences.
  • Good luck for your protagonist is proscribed. Bad luck, however, is permitted without limit. (Bujold’s role of coincidence)
  • Tension can because merely by a stranger coming into the midst. Something that is not part of the ordinary structure of daily life can cause tension.
  • Multiple viewpoints (mostly in a novel those privacy can be useful in developing tension because you can follow the antagonist as well as the protagonist. You see how they are at odds and see the stakes increasing from both points of view.
  • Opposition must be a rising and falling action. It cannot be constant. For maximum opposition at the climax of the story, everything must be on the line for the protagonist. He/C must be the position to lose his life all that gives it value.
  • Don’t let your character no crucial information that you don’t tell the reader. However, when a character makes a plan, you should wait and let the information be revealed only once, as it is executed. The plan, however, can’t come off without a hitch.
  • False tension is invoked by having the character make stupid decisions. If you can justify their reasons through character or plot, then it’s okay, but not otherwise.
  • When the bad guy is a person, the ending is more satisfying and tidy because he can be defeated and the problem goes away. When confronting a social or physical issue, that is not always so.
  • Psychologically, criminals tend to focus on a chosen victim, the mind blocking out all else including past and future, a sort of tunnel vision. After the crime, all of that comes back in a torrent.
  • Inspired scenes (often the climaxes) using the less rewriting then the housekeeping scenes.
  • In a basically evil character, he/she can have some sympathetic qualities. RE: the man hunter (movie), red Dragon (book), silence of the lambs. He really wants love and acceptance but the stories busy can’t get it consistently.
  • You don’t necessarily want to invite your troubled heroes’ home for dinner. Heroes don’t always have up appealing qualities.

More notes on how family search such as setting up an account.

  • When you’re teaching others you need to find out what their goal and motivation is and then help them accomplish that goal.
  • If your student shares a family event, invite them to type it up and post that story up on family search under the name of that person who the memory references.
  • Facilitate with your students their family story and promoting the holy spirt.
  • When creating an account that will be viewed by others, ladies will sometimes use their maiden names so that relatives can find their association with that person.
  • When setting up an account you will need to provide an email or a phone that can receive a text, as those will be the two ways to retrieve a password if you need to get a reminder.
  • Same account for familysearch.org matches with the name used for lds.org. Make sure you have a great password.
  • Parents can find the church number of their children by going to LDS tools and parents menu.
  • Teacher can create a ‘helper’ account for their students and use the last 5 characters of their church id number. Prior to a consultation, a ‘helper’ may go into their students account and find some opportunities that can provide success to provide early encouragements for their student in doing their history. The church is not trying to create a bunch of gemologists but to help members do work for their ancestors.

More next week.

State Of Education:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I attended the Eagle form and took notes on the various speakers. This is what a speaker had to say education. Any miss information provided in these notes is the fault of the note taker.

  • The 10th amendment talks about rights that are not specifically listed for the federal government or rights for the states. We need to use our state rights
  • The 2011 Gov. Herbert said Utah is not a colony. Might be related to getting education funding.
  • Problems with Utah leadership.
  1. The adoption of common core.
  2. Medicaid expansion with federal strings. Alternative Utah access plans where doctors would be pay for those in need. But that cost to be then transferred over to the patient’s that do pay insurance.
  • Eight years ago Gov. Herbert took office and at the time lesson 5.2 a federal money came from the federal government. Now 7%. (Not sure if I wrote these notes down accurately)
  • if we wanted to not have the federal government control our schools in Utah that we could deny the 300 million that we get from the feds. 300 million is half of our current excess budget
  • state rights mean that we need to claim our state sovereignty.
  • When freedom flourishes businesses grow
  • Reagan was once asked: what have you learned about America. His answer “all great changes begin at the dinner table.”

Making a magic system seem realistic:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I came across some typed up notes from a previous session of life universe and everything panel. Here are the notes on writing about making a magic system seem realistic.

  • Power must have a price.
  • Magic must involve a risk.
  • Magic should be subject to Murphy’s Law. (Kathleen Woodberry)
  • the more unpredictable magic is the easier it is to cheat the reader.
  • A story can be weakened by worrying too much about justifying the magic.
  • Magic must be integral to the world. Plan ahead for prohibitions should be imposed on the magic system and characters who use it.
  • Perhaps the limits of magic use should be based on in the character. Either limitations unique to him in his world and magic system, or limitations which you as a writer impose to provide conflict and opposition in the story.
  • A miracle is what God does. Magic is what a human does even if he gets his power from God.
  • Magic, like technology, exist to manipulate the environment, and thus must have limits.
  • Limitations on magic can be physical (within the magic itself) or social. Or both. Social limits can add conflict for the character when confronted with the need to use it.
  • Limits can also be self-imposed by the character, choosing how to use the magic, for good or ill.
  • A character with ultimate magical power is often less interesting than one would limits. Morality of a character can limit his power, even of his power is self is unlimited.
  • If the story is about the magic, the limits should be inherent in the magic itself. If it is about the characters and their use of the magic, the limitations might be best imposed from within.
  • All power has a price. If the magic user doesn’t pay it, then someone else must.
  • Nero Wolfe’s (Rex Stout) price in his ‘Detective magic’ is his own immobility.
  • Different characters within the same story can have different ideas about who is paying the price for magic.
  • “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
  • When you can write down the laws of magic, it become science. Magic is non-reproducible.
  • When a character is so accustomed to magic as part of his/her daily life, will he/she call it magic?

Managing Giant Projects:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

This panel was presented by the creators of a new game called Planet Mercenary. These are my notes form LTUE 2016.

  • Game began by finding partners/ team members who share a common interest.
  • You can’t do everything, you don’t know everything. Find people who are good at the part of the job you don’t know.
  • The management person needs to have material ready for the creators. For they will create in spurts and need to have tasks ready when the ready to do creative actions.
  • In advance you need to define a role of who does what.
  • Have a weekly meeting. You need to know what needs to be done and each person needs to get a report of what they’ve accomplished and what they need to do next. Everyone needs to have an idea of what to get out of the meeting. If you don’t have a weekly meeting then your project stalls. Each project has stages. Each of them have individual goals for each stage. As each person must reach a goal there also prerequisites to reaching that goal.
  • You need to give yourself time to work.
  • Creating planet mercenary took 10 years to create from concept to reality
  • They invested $1500 to commission work from artists. Then you can find out who you like the commission becomes a audition. Every project has multiple moments of doubt.
  • If you emotional about a topic don’t respond emotionally. Stop maybe sleep on it before making the decision.
  • Accountability, each member needs to be self-accountable. One example of this is it when you send an email to somebody do they respond quickly.. One communication challenge is that certain creative people need specifics on what they need to accomplish. The writer needed specific word count per page because gives them the idea of how to feel the page with the illustrations etc. and the manager of the project didn’t realize they had to do preliminary sketch to give the author an idea what is expected
  • You may have a wide base of fans but only certain fans will be interested in a specific project. Realized that certain fans will not be happy with the end result. Most of the acceptance of the project you can’t control but deliver what you promise.
  • Used kick starter before do the project..
  • In this game the characters of the dissipate of those the speak first. One could expect that the loudmouth could then take over the game. But as they make a decision that is wrong they get punished for it. And they may be discouraged from the domineering. You want to design your game so that even those that are more reserved and are not loudmouths still can participate.
  • You need outside eyes because creators cannot recognize all perspectives and having beta players gives you those possessions. You can see how you need to plan for the unplanned response
  • In bound market is when you have beta players play the game and they give feedback. Then you change the product by the things you learn to improve it. Give it back to the players and you create a feedback loop marketing is about giving out information.
  • Tools of the project: Google drop box, Skype and Google docs. Google docs lets two people share the one document at the same time. Dropbox let you put a file folder that is labeled in the works. That means don’t touch that file until the creators finished working on one at greater person is done they moved the file from the in the works folder.
  • Be careful of not willing to spend money for the use of a tool when you to spend $100 and become more effective in your tasks by the use that tool.
  • How to maintain morel. You can do this by creating milestones and as you accomplish those milestones you feel successful. You can feel discouraged if the project starts to feel uninteresting. That may be because now you have do the hard work and not just a fun work. Another possibility is that your building something that is boring. Another example of this is in the writing if nothing is happening in the chapter that you may need to remove the chapter.
  • A contract between the dispense Nice to be clearly defined responsibilities that define roles and jobs as well as deadlines.
  • Find people who are interested in capable in the project not just because they’re your friends.

The next few teaching embellishments will be on the topic of family history work.

Family history is the second most popular hobby in the world so my notes will helpfully have universal interest.

  • The Holy Ghost can help us find our ancestors.
  • Family history can tell us where we came from and us let us know who you are.
  • Avoid the “if only” scenario by recording stories of family members before they pass on. It gives you a chance to ask of their personal experiences. Such as how they met their partner, their relationship to God etc.
  • Family history is the second most popular hobby in the world second to gardening
  • God will help you find the ancestors as you make the effort. Holy Ghost will guide you.

Town hall meeting from four members of Utah legislature 2016:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I went to Town hall meeting was several members of the legislature talked about different bills. Much of the meeting was dominated by some very impassioned people who are for legalized marijuana.

Sen. Dayton talked about her water bills HB 80: which wants to have half the 1.8 tax that was posted be divided between water projects and conservation and transportation but much of it has been going over to transportation. The bill is to get more work done toward our water concerns of the state. We were once a 1 million people and are now up to 3 million people and we need to improve our infrastructure. The bill also means that you use more water you pay more money.

Sen. Stratton talked about land rights for the state. 62% of Utah land is controlled by the federal government. The bill is to protect the resources. Five of the nine justices voted that control the land should go to the states.

She also talked about a safe technology bill so that children would not see inappropriate material in school. And would let a school Council determine what is appropriate rather than the federal government.

There’s also a sex abuse education bill where a committee can review the content of the curriculum. Parents can also opt in to have their children Receive sex education rather than opt out. The purpose of the bill is to have parents more responsible for the education of their parents in certain areas

Sen. ramble talked about Utah County having the highest job growth in the country

From this point on the rest of the meeting was on medical marijuana. Four key people in the audience were very vocal about sharing their views that marijuana should be legalized. Different senators talked about the benefits of medical marijuana but said this bill had several areas of concern. One was that with marijuana being illegal at the federal level so police officers are handicapped in maintaining the law. Another part of the bill is the concern that doctors would not be liable for prescribing marijuana in inaccurately. They would be exempt from being liable.

The legislature wants to get more research done and get the backing of the medical community. Most of the research done on medical marijuana has been out of the country because marijuana is identified as a level I drug and this so it’s illegal to test with it. The recommendation is to have marijuana changed to a level two drug so it’ll be legal to test in medical labs.

The one of the legislators in the front of the room talked about people he met who were helped with marijuana and the consequences of extended family who was hurt through drug abuse

One of the frustrations shared in the meeting was how the LDS church will give feedback on a certain topic late into the legislature session rather than early in the session. And that people don’t have an opportunity to approach the lobbyists who act on behalf of the LDS church.

I had to go to work so this is all the notes I took.
