Modeling a story for children’s education: 4-10-17

I watched a video called Make it Tell it Write it DVD, hosted by storyteller Donald Davis. Here are some additional notes about a topic he covered on modeling a story. This information can be useful for primary teachers, young children Sunday school teachers and regular school teachers. Any inaccuracies are the fault of the note taker.

  • A lot of children have risen up in school that they have not heard enough stories to know what a story is.
  • A story needs to be absorbed by modeling. Stories take time to tell. It gives an opportunity for children to mentally repeat new vocabulary. It also gives them time to wonder what is going to happen next. Also, you can teach new vocabulary such as first use the word gallop and then later use the horse running to add understanding to the first word.
  • Provide a simple story pattern.
  • When a story opens, you meet some people find out about their ordinary life (places). You meet them when everything in their worlds is normal. In chapter two trouble is coming.  (Another word for trouble is problem) then the questions come.
  • How are we going to get out of it?
  • in trying to fix the problem two questions are answered:
  • Is helps coming?
  • Is someone learning something?
  • At the end of the story we learn of people, place, and a new normal world is created.
  • Show this pattern to the kids. Have them come up with problems, please and people and they are creating their own stories.
  • A teacher could start the first day of a new year in class. Instead of asking children what did you do for the summer? The teacher can start with, this is what I did for the summer. At the end, you ask the students what did you do?
  • You can ask questions and their answers can be the source of answers. Ways to brainstorm a new story ask questions like the following: Have you every cut your own hair?
  • Have you ever cut someone else hair?
  • Have you ever cut a pet’s hair?
  • You could change the question. Have you ever drawn on a wall?
  • You share a memory. Tell your students a story of something from your past. After you tell the story you ask students questions.
  • Who was in my story?
  • What places were in my story?
  • You ask did anyone in my story that didn’t learn something. When you have a big class and you want to give kids a chance to tell their stories. They can go into groups of four. You might be able to get volunteers of adults (from the community) to come in and just listen to their stories in. If kids need help with as story, you can ask about the story such as. The volunteers can also be taught to ask these questions.
  • What kind of dog was it?
  • Where were you when this happened?
  • When you have kids first writing of the story, only give them 5 min to write the story. Then they write 5 min for a second story. Then another 5 min for a 3rd story. Ask them to select which of the 3 is the best story.
  • Storyteller’s book: writing as a second language.

I think the following are notes from an Eagles forum that I attended one year I think 2015. I took these notes nearly a year ago. Any inaccuracies are the fault of the note taker.

  • The world is run by those who show up.
  • Some people feel that education should be controlled from cradle to grave.
  • Some of the problems we face are because of the phrasing of different laws.
  • Turn-of-the-century told government should be controlled by science and to have only experts make decisions
  • Need to take that power away from the federal agencies that are not elected officials.

World building:

This is a panel from one of the Life the Universe and Everything symposiums.  Any inaccuracies or misinformation in any of these notes is the fault of the note taker.

  • Build your planetary system first.
  • You need to follow the laws of physics.
  • Learn how cloud and moisture is influenced by the topology of the land.
  • You can rely upon the world will to build the world or you can create a new world of stiffer you have to set it up.
  • Don’t be intimidated if everything is wrong don’t be afraid to create.
  • Look for real-world analogies or associations.
  • One author based her werewolf culture on hunter-gatherer cultures.
  • Space need to determine faster than light travel.
  • Use the possible means immediate life medication.
  • Draw a map of your world. So you can do consistent with how people move around. This includes the map of a space station or even a room.
  • If you have a world where the rivers go upstream need to base that reading the book you need to set up sense of place for the blocking of your characters.
  • You can show how your world works as seen through the eyes your characters.
  • The story depicts the tip of the iceberg of you world building and much of it is the iceberg underneath the water and is unseen.
  • Research weather patterns and influences.
  • Have your world play a role in your story.
  • Other influences on the world will be religion, economics, philosophy influences excited come up with an idea I think I’ll make a different and include sensory details since.
  • If you have characters that don’t show emotion and taking vows may not be something that is that involves emotion.
  • Book: locked in.
  • Keep a record of the laws and details of the characters to follow.
  • If characters deviate from their behavior, you need a logical reason.
  • When writing your stories show consistency of emotions.
  • Is your world have music is there a restriction on music and if so, why?
  • Seek out books on meteorology that can discuss weather patterns and find.

How to use Facebook promote your club or yourself:

I watched a video made by some Utah toastmasters’ members on how to effectively use Facebook to promote a club. This knowledge can be used in multiple areas.

  • Facebook groups the official toastmasters international: 14K members
  • Your target audience for a club Facebook page, the target group is our members. It’s also being used for prospects. Visitors can see what the club does and what members are like.
  • 3 settings under Facebook

Public means it’s seen by all.

Closed; only seen by members. (TM international> closed group have to be invited.

Secret (maybe create a group for people that are organizing an upcoming event.  Just send the link to particular members.

Tips and ‘Tricks for using Group Facebook pages.

  • Under group page, you can do multiple activates
  • Under the More / […] menu is a drop down
  • []add file
  • [] Create photo album / video
  • [] create doc (blog article) i.e. what it’s like to be in a contest
  • [] Create Event (create an event as an open house for the club or to create a video for training
  • Create a poll (survey) you can only do this with a group page. If we have a potluck or training what day would be good?
  • Facebook page will have a line to identify itself. i.e.: ‘public group’ under the header of the group page.
  • You can drag a mouse over photos of people, to see who members are.

Education and storytelling for children:

I watched a video called Make it Tell it Write it DVD, hosted by storyteller Donald Davis. I took notes about a topic he covered of education and storytelling for children. This information can be useful for primary teachers, young children Sunday school teachers and regular school teachers. Any inaccuracies is the fault o the note taker.

  • The word, principal, is an adjective, not a noun. It means the principal teacher.
  • In the 1800s how did children learn language was by being in a household of where the majority is adults and communicating with adults? Children lived with parents maybe also grandparents and adult neighbors. Children were often the minority when it came to age. And the kids talked mainly with adults.  Adults tell stories in their conversations which consist of stories about where they went, what they said, what they did and who they were with. Children listen to those stories and learn from them.
  • Primary language is absorbed.
  • In earlier centuries, the family goes to town to associate with the community on Saturday.
  • Sundays they went to church. Children listened to adults. Look at the hymnals to see words, rhyming, and syntax of the words in a hymn book. Children learn from those songs.
  • Rule of language acquisition is that the majority win. If more adults are around then children learn to communicate as an adult.
  • The kindergarten was invented as a remieral entity. In 1970 after one generation of TV our 5 yr. olds no longer had the language to learn.
  • Language is not a subject; language is the relations system that enables all the other subjects of school to be taught. It enables us to run the software program that we call the subjects in school. If you don’t upgrade language everything suffers.
  • Since the last 30 yrs. Donald started telling stories he’s observed that the language skills have deuterated so much that the vocabulary he used to teach first graders, he now uses for third grades.
  • School nowadays the majority language is dominated by the children. Because there are more kids in a class then the adults and the majority win. Teachers even lower their vocabulary to meet with the children.
  • The only times the adults can be the language majority is when you read out loud or when you tell a story. The model of adults talking is no long shared then these spots.
  • The last item of furniture that is now purchased by families is the dining table. The first thing purchased by a new married couple is a TV, even before the bed. Maybe have a mattress on the floor.
  • The primary place that language is acquired is around the table. Families now, don’t have dinner together.
  • When taking a new language class you such communication with each other is to learn that language.
  • First place for langue to grow is around the table and the second place is driving in the car. Families often don’t eat together and cars nowadays come with video players.
  • When adults read to children kids can’t skip the words or rush through the text to get it done. When an adult reads or tells a story the teller can take a longer time. Tell the story slowly it gives the students time to hear the words and to in advance guess where the story is going before the teller tells that part of the story.
  • On the bus, the lunch room and class the language majority is the kids. Adults will start using the slang and words the children use rather than rising the kids up to the adult words.
  • In the 30 yrs. since the PC (politically correct) was created. the language vocabulary has dropped from recognizing from 25K words down to 10 K words. The use of keyboard had dropped the vocabulary as well. There is an increased use of adjectives instead of the correct use of the noun. There is an increased use of adverbs instead of searching for the right verbs. We have an increased use of words such as Awesome instead of seeking for help to use the correct word.

I got an email of a webinar about the business of scriptwriting. Took notes for what part I saw. Cant’ find the email to credit the person who has the suggestions. Any inaccuracies are the fault of the note taker.

  • People don’t like to read, nowdays. How can you create excitement for your script? You can put a short video of it up on YouTube.
  • A sizzle reel is used to present some of the most engaging parts of the screenplay. You can create concept art. Key art if art that gives a good illustration of your world. ]
  • Crowdsourcing: put video up. You are not looking for money, but to find people who will be on your core team.
  • Once you’ve made a list of producing or actors who like that kind of movie call them up.
  • an option is where a producer rents a script. I will give you a non-exclusive option to a producer who may not have many contacts. Be sure the producer has a good reputation and respects the writers who wrote the script.
  • Expect long waiting time between writing and selling the movie. Don’t quite your day job.
  • You should have more than one thing on the market.
  • First scripts usually sell for 100K. Learn how to manage your money. Don’t’ spend it frivolously. Take care of essentials and put the rest in the bank; as it is a very high and low industry. Live nicely but not extravagantly.

Sell your book:

  • In New York, you need to finish your book in advance.
  • Establish a reputation of delivering on time.
  • Interview with the vampire had some funny lines. When the character is told by the vampire that he’s a vampire, the character says “how I did it off your meds?” Another funny dialogue is let’s go get lunch but not to have me as lunch. Both lines show this guy to be a real guy.
  • Want to sell your book go to Amazon and see the link that Amazon readers can read and see if you are convinced to buy their book. The same conditions is what you need to respond to.
  • Michelle says we must first eat with the eyes. The food needs to look attractive so we need to consider the visual aspects of your book.
  • Do it yourself means you have to promote yourself and get your manuscript professionally prepared.
  • Editors are looking for a reason to reject your manuscript.
  • You have two pages to sell your novel.
  • The beginning of your book needs to set up questions in the reader’s mind.
  • In 30 seconds of reading, you need to have a high concept introduced.
  • In the plot summary/back of the book avoid big words.
  • You want to concentrate on who wears what and why.
  • She got nebulated by Jason Brooke.
  • You need to make promises and deliver them.
  • Need to have very powerful first lines and great closing lines.
  • The opening line of the story in an anthology needs to meet the theme of the anthology
  • Study different for sentences and first paragraphs
  • The problem with nano nano (book in a month) is that people think they can write a book and not and it’s ready to sell. That’s just the first draft
  • A great mistake for many authors is thinking they need to have the first two pages be perfect to move on. Later you can go back and rewrite it.
  • To proofread you miss things on screen so print it out.
  • Reading out loud also helps to catch more.
  • If the beta reader says something is wrong they may be right even though they can’t identify what is wrong.
  • The author makes the final decision of what to be fixed
  • Show world building in first two pages
  • Start with character’s name and problem. to begin with the ending.

Plain air artists:

I learned some things about plain air art during one of the toastmaster meetings. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker.

 

  • This type of painting was started by a Frenchman named Claude moaner
  • Need an apron or scrub, easel and oil paints from any store.
  • This artist uses a mirror as a paint plate. For it is easy to clean
  • Need canvas. Get small ones when you first start out.
  • Have a carry cart with wheels to carry materials and for easy transportation.
  • Choose Location, location, location. Make sure the weather is ok. Artist once did a painting at a lake near Zion National Park and a gust of wind interrupted her work and the whole family. The wind was so bad it tipped boats over and hurt people. All her supplies were blown away. She used goggles to see through the wind and storm to collect her materials. The police and ambulance came because of many hurt people at the lake.
  • Take a picture of your location. Get permission to paint the scene, if needed.
  • Use brown paint and draw a line. You paint from light to dark. The top of the painting is the blue sky.
  • Second, you want to paint the water.
  • Third, draw the line between water and the land.
  • Last will be trees because they have less light and will be the darkest.
  • There is a spray that you put on the painting, to protect the painting once it’s completed.
