Writing terms and their function:

This is probably was not the title of the panel but it seems to match with the content below. These are notes taken from a writer symposium about various terms. Any misinformation is the fault of the note taker

  • Tagline: very brief electronic spread.
  • Blurb: comment from other authors. Work with people you know who can swap blurbs.
  • Some publishers might prefer blogger name rather than real names is that to the office known for.
  • Don’t get your feelings hurt someone does not want to work
  • These are the notes from one of the panels I attended at life universe and everything.
  • Send buyers to editors. They should be about 200 words when you put on the back of the book. 50 to 100 worded bios are used in a program. You can have various edited versions depend upon the use.
  • Humor in a bio is good.
  • Read other bios from John the books. Have a tweet that mentions your book.
  • You want something that other people that with you.
  • Have the bio match and cater to the theme and image of the conference.
  • Your bio may change as things are updated.
  • A bio with a synopsis – editors know that an author doesn’t have many credentials.
  • If you have nonrelated fiction in a bio have it related to the topic of nonfiction work such as if you work in a flower shop that shows your expertise on the book of flower arrangements. Awards are published in more than 10 K markets.
  • Indicate if you work the big-name author. Back liners: Book descriptions may be the summary of information that we use Macquarie.
  • Self-publish – look for length restrictions of bios such as what smashers may have. It has a 400 character limit.
  • You don’t have to tell the reader the whole story. Don’t get the ending just a teaser.
  • If you get hooked on a book, write it down.
  • Book descriptions are as important as the cover. Protagonist, conflict, and antagonist – the hero fights against what forces and why should the reader care.
  • The book descriptions for genre look on the Internet and see what other people doing and make your similar.
  • Have the voice of characters match to the book cover.
  • You can do a book blurb/bio/back cover in a writing group.
  • You can change book descriptions on Amazon.
  • Your book descriptions need to illustrate the major conflict and the stakes dependent upon failure or success.
  • Have the same length of books that match the genre or type of book. Five guys in the level – announces awards.
  • Make sure you have the back cover match the tone of the narrator.
  • Synopsis: one page 2 to 5 pages. The synopsis needs to have key points, and plot twists as though the ending.
  • Look at the scene for continuity of plot structure.
  • Maybe just highlight key events in the chapter.
  • Don’t write in the first person.
  • Reference to self in the third person.
  • Some synopsis does six conflicts in sequence order.
  • One page synopsis, have people read it and ask what their questions are about what they read.
  • Minor 3 to 5 characters on the synopsis. High fantasy might have tried family actions.
  • Look at how Wikipedia does a description of a movie plot. This could be a good source to follow.
  • Title of one’s work: in space, no one can hear you scream

Marketing for small businesses:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

This was a presentation at Toastmasters. Notes are complements of the secretary.

This speech is meant for small business owners or people with traditional businesses trying to get into business online.

  • People talk about traditional methods such as TV and radio for advertising and now transitioning to online.  Traditional marketing bludgeons you with advertisements about Taco Bell and things you don’t care about.  Online is not the same.  You’re in control.  You go to a website, click on the ad to get the ad.  Attraction marketing.
  • As a business, you create a customer avatar.
  • People are online (Facebook) and want to feel intrigued.  They have to feel like the message is for them.  An example is Adam Jones, a fictitious 28-year-old man, manager, married with three kids aged 8, 5,2 , loves the gym, fitness, motorcycles, video games, and spends on average of 3 hours/night and weekends online.
  • May be able to find a picture of him.
  • You can find demographics on him via command search “gym”.  It gives you a list of magazines.  Men’s Fitness and other magazines have a “media kit” which provides information such as demographics.
  • Information pulls up as a PDF with audience breakdown by
  • Male/female,
  • Age groups,
  • Employment,
  • College,
  • Income, etc.
  • You can add to Adam Jones’ profile.  Income median and race, presuming black in this case.
  • That way you can focus on something they’re interested in.
  • Without a customer avatar, you have a lower chance of attracting customers.  More likely, you will push them away.

Has all to do with patriarchal blessings:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I lost part of my notes. A husband and wife provided a great fireside. They were Susan and Geroge Durant. Here are the wife’s comments. Both have delightful senses of humor. The theme was on the purposes of patriarchal blessings.

  • How to you have your best day: Complementing people and tell them it is your best day. This is the thing that has helped me.
  • The patriarch means a father who blesses.
  • Patriarchs are given a stewardship to bless people in a geographic area.
  • A prophet was once asked, what is the hardest job in the church. To be a patriarch. Why, because he doesn’t have councilors. He has to tell that person who they are.
  • Spencer w. Kimball: got an assignment to go to Freeport LA. His assignment to ordain a man who would be the patriarch. Stake president collected a bunch of brethren in a room. The man was not there. As people entered conference Kimbal chose a man who didn’t’ have hands. The mantel lands on the man
  • Patriarch has the right to say what tribe you are from and the purpose you have as related to that tribe.
  • Brigham Young said the men in the tribe of Ephraim, the men are unruly. Ungovernable, warlike. The one trait that stands out is their spirit of adventure.
  • Every tribe has responsibility. In the old synagogues has 12 windows and each tribe is assigned a window. The reason for the windows each one has a different route to return to the great Jehovah.
  • The responsibility for Ephraim is saved for the latter days. They are the forerunner of the last days. Like John the Baptist to forewarn the last days. To prepare the earth for the second coming.
  • She broke into columns her patriotical blessings into the categories of blessings, commandments, and warnings. Commandments (strengths) for every blessing there is an attached commandment. I.e.: if you don’t do such and such you have no such promise.
  • David o McKay: had an old patriarch named Smith. Smith gave a lot of blessings. He sensed he was missing giving a blessing for a boy. He went from door to door, from town to town, to find that boy. Smith eventually knocks on David o McKay’s house. 13 yr old David is playing marbles. Patriarch says he found who he is looking for. His blessing to David: You will be a leader of the church. 13 yr. David went to his mother in the kitchen and told her, I will not give up my marbles.
  • George Albert Smith grew up across the street from the Salt Lake temple. Legally blind. Got patriarchal blessing: as his grandfather before him, he’ll be a leader of the church. The only good thin Arl z mazser could say about George: George is punctual. He always attended conference, but one Sat missed conference to go to the fair with his daughter. When people saw him later, they started congratulating him. He finally asked why. He as voted in to be a member of the council of the 12.
  • If you wait to be happy, you’ve waited too long.
  • George asked her to marry him in the first min. he entered her house.
  • Happiness is a choice.
  • What can make you be happy start with: it’s your best day. Complement people. It makes you feel good.
  • One way to be happy is to be nice. It goes a long way.
  • Figure out in your patriarchal Blessing. See what the blessings are, what are the commandments. What are the warnings / thing to avoid.
  • Each of us have known happiness in different phases in our lives.

Difference between herbs and seasonings:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

I got this from a video post by Chef Todd Mohr.

Herbs are the leaves of plants (which active oils) added late in cooking. Put them in your dish at the end of cooking.

Seasonings are the seeds and stems of plants. They are added early in cooking. They can alter the flavor of your dish. This is good for grammar as well.

I believe I got this info from a workshop I attended.

Ask why a book is effective.

  • You become an authority whenever you do something that you are living.
  • You as an author will evaluate. And how to get speaking engagements.
  • Books and never thrown away. We need to focus on more than book sells.
  • It is not about how many books to sell and how your books sell you.
  • The primary objective of your book is to show how your book can help you as the author.
  • Provide lectures, speaking engagements, business opportunities.
  • Wright the right content. Interview people who are experts in the information you want to share. Be a reporter. Learn how to interview people.
  • Design awesome covers. Need to touch upon psychological trigger points.
  • Captive reads for existing businesses.
  • Boost your sales.
  • Get free publicity this includes global the city.
  • Get other people to pay for everything. Show them the social benefits of promoting your message.
  • Make a decision. Rich people make a decision and run with it. They rarely change their decision.

Virtues of learning another language:

Here are notes from Toastmasters presentation:

  1. Personal benefit.  Wires your brain in a different way.  Working memory changed when learning a language.  Creates neural pathways and connections.  Math proofs are an example.  They are horrible but very important.  Mathematicians have to prove that calculations work.
  2. Exposes you to different people and cultures.   He spent 6 months in China.  The Chinese people told him “You’re so fat”, which meant you’re doing well in life.  In S. Africa, he and friend were walking on the street when they saw two men walking towards them on the sidewalk.  He and his friend split and walked on both sides of the men.  They were offended and scared and yelled at them about not doing that – considered threatening.

Spelling restaurant:

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedin

Good: restaurant

Bad:   resteraunt

I keep spelling it wrong. I remember Rest and Aunt. It’s the au I need to remember the au. If you have an Appetite yoU go to a restaurant.

Do you have an alternative suggestion? If yes, please respond in the comment section of the blog.

I thought of another idea. Aur and Ant are in letters of three. Remembering those six characters might help me remember aur-ant.

***
Here is another idea. There are two As. You might want a second serving of A to drink. thus two As will help you remember the sequence of letters.
