Education and storytelling for children:

I watched a video called Make it Tell it Write it DVD, hosted by storyteller Donald Davis. I took notes about a topic he covered of education and storytelling for children. This information can be useful for primary teachers, young children Sunday school teachers and regular school teachers. Any inaccuracies is the fault o the note taker.

  • The word, principal, is an adjective, not a noun. It means the principal teacher.
  • In the 1800s how did children learn language was by being in a household of where the majority is adults and communicating with adults? Children lived with parents maybe also grandparents and adult neighbors. Children were often the minority when it came to age. And the kids talked mainly with adults.  Adults tell stories in their conversations which consist of stories about where they went, what they said, what they did and who they were with. Children listen to those stories and learn from them.
  • Primary language is absorbed.
  • In earlier centuries, the family goes to town to associate with the community on Saturday.
  • Sundays they went to church. Children listened to adults. Look at the hymnals to see words, rhyming, and syntax of the words in a hymn book. Children learn from those songs.
  • Rule of language acquisition is that the majority win. If more adults are around then children learn to communicate as an adult.
  • The kindergarten was invented as a remieral entity. In 1970 after one generation of TV our 5 yr. olds no longer had the language to learn.
  • Language is not a subject; language is the relations system that enables all the other subjects of school to be taught. It enables us to run the software program that we call the subjects in school. If you don’t upgrade language everything suffers.
  • Since the last 30 yrs. Donald started telling stories he’s observed that the language skills have deuterated so much that the vocabulary he used to teach first graders, he now uses for third grades.
  • School nowadays the majority language is dominated by the children. Because there are more kids in a class then the adults and the majority win. Teachers even lower their vocabulary to meet with the children.
  • The only times the adults can be the language majority is when you read out loud or when you tell a story. The model of adults talking is no long shared then these spots.
  • The last item of furniture that is now purchased by families is the dining table. The first thing purchased by a new married couple is a TV, even before the bed. Maybe have a mattress on the floor.
  • The primary place that language is acquired is around the table. Families now, don’t have dinner together.
  • When taking a new language class you such communication with each other is to learn that language.
  • First place for langue to grow is around the table and the second place is driving in the car. Families often don’t eat together and cars nowadays come with video players.
  • When adults read to children kids can’t skip the words or rush through the text to get it done. When an adult reads or tells a story the teller can take a longer time. Tell the story slowly it gives the students time to hear the words and to in advance guess where the story is going before the teller tells that part of the story.
  • On the bus, the lunch room and class the language majority is the kids. Adults will start using the slang and words the children use rather than rising the kids up to the adult words.
  • In the 30 yrs. since the PC (politically correct) was created. the language vocabulary has dropped from recognizing from 25K words down to 10 K words. The use of keyboard had dropped the vocabulary as well. There is an increased use of adjectives instead of the correct use of the noun. There is an increased use of adverbs instead of searching for the right verbs. We have an increased use of words such as Awesome instead of seeking for help to use the correct word.
