What does the “American Dream” mean to you?

At Toastmasters members were asked the above question. Here are some responses.

–  American dream means different things to different people.

Could be the opportunity to travel to the 50 states, study whatever you want to study, visit other countries.

–  Emigrants way book-Irish author.

Challenges emigrants have.  Some obvious.  Being out of element, not having family here.  Usually, know someone that can put in a good word to help start a job.

In founding, docs, they talk about having a shot. Not a guarantee,  don’t get prosperity and healthcare, you get a shot.  A chance.  People from other countries know this.  They know it’s going to be hard.  Other countries don’t even get that.

Irish author said no opportunities there.  Wanted to come to America and works in real estate.  The pursuit of happiness.

– I appreciate listening to a prominent commenter from India.  He was glad to come to America and away from the caste system. In India, you can’t rise above your level.

Appreciate the founding of America.  A bunch of men with different personalities worked together for the good of the country, worked together and compromised to become the United States.  13 states combined efforts to become a nation.

We should not sleep in our contentment and not stand up for privileges and rights or educate ourselves.  Appreciate having capabilities and rights of speech, religion.  Need to keep those rights active.

–  Had friend Azaiah democratic party in his country.  Emigrated to US.  After a lot of hard work and effort, he gained citizenship.   Met other new Americans. Heard a story of new Americans and 1st 4th of July and inducted on Mount Rushmore.  Inductees stood on a small stage and presented citizenship award.

If you emigrate here, lots of work.  Native-born American, appreciate hard work to earn that.  Those of us born here, uphold immigrants b/c they are the American dream.  Worked hard, achieved. Look at them and realize where ancestors came from.  Unless you have native American blood, all of us are immigrants.

–  The American dream, what a dubious phrase.  Someone is trying to sell you something.

Getting somewhere in life. A lot of headaches and work and little to show for it.

If you are willing to put forth work, be responsible for efforts, American dream still has shine.  If willing to set goals and take them by the hand to the finish line, you can have the American dream, but takes work.  Going to require you to step up to the plate every single day.

Can’t just be responsible once in a while.  Consistent and walk goal every day to finish line and achieve dreams.
