Here are notes from Toastmasters presentation:
- Personal benefit. Wires your brain in a different way. Working memory changed when learning a language. Creates neural pathways and connections. Math proofs are an example. They are horrible but very important. Mathematicians have to prove that calculations work.
- Exposes you to different people and cultures. He spent 6 months in China. The Chinese people told him “You’re so fat”, which meant you’re doing well in life. In S. Africa, he and friend were walking on the street when they saw two men walking towards them on the sidewalk. He and his friend split and walked on both sides of the men. They were offended and scared and yelled at them about not doing that – considered threatening.
