Where do I find stories ideas?

I participated in the Utah state story telling conference call. These are some notes on our conversions of where do I find stories ideas.

  • Have a basic foundation in folktales and fairy tales
  • Read, read, read all kinds of stories
  • Look, look, look and become an observer, look for story moments
  • Listen, listen, listen and become familiar with other professional tellers through circuit performers at festivals (Donald Davis, Bill Harley, Elizabeth Ellis, Carmen Deedy), radio hosts or guests (Garrison Keillor, Sam Payne), and television personalities (Jerry Seinfeld)
  • Write, write, write and think about what you experience could transform into story scraps/ideas and eventually annotate these “bones”

  • we’ve got to find the story. discuss what sources can we find.
  • Donald Davis, when he tells personal stories he will focus on a specific year.
  • Others have drawn maps of the neighborhood and get ideas.
  • Tattle story on family members.
  • For family reunions, look up histories in family is stories museum. downtown SLC. still a lot of info up there that have not been digitalized yet.
  • Stories of grandparents meeting and romance.
  • Some learn a lot of stories on grandparents lap
  • Sometimes things have to be changed from reality to make the story but still stay true to the character. make sure you keep them in character.
  • All stories are true but some are more true than other.
  • Already reading is a great source of story ideas.
  • Book the Pen Commandments.
  • Get an idea from another articles teller writer and then alter it for yourself
