At Life the Universe and Everything symposium, there was a panel on YA fiction trends. Any inaccuracies or confusion, it is the fault of the note taker.

  • Time travel and Pirates the books are coming out
  • Fantasy from the sources of outside Europe is becoming more prominent
  • Historical fantasy is growing.
  • Take a historical event and twist it.
  • What is dying down? Dystopia and paranormal romance.
  • How diversity stories of females and males.
  • Mythology is on the upswing. Angels and Demons are hard to sell.
  • Middle Eastern topics are selling as well as Asian.
  • Check out writing excuses podcast. Lighthearted fantasy is going down.
  • Write what resonates with you and it can sell.
  • Find out what your book is like of others on the market.

  • Create a combination, mix things up such as the book the throne of glass mixed with one of the old books are well known.
  • When you do a book pitch you might combine two popular but not top of the list books. Do not compare it to Harry Potter. This will show the publisher that you’re familiar with the market. You could phrase this comparison in the vein that might appeal to readers of Loblaw. Or use the phrase this book makes it appeal to.
  • Being original is when you have established idea that has a unique twist.
  • The more you create and write the better you become.
  • Reading your genre and read outside your genre.
  • Read about the coach you want to borrow from.
