Uses of symbolism in literature:

At Life the Universe and Everything symposium, there was a panel on uses of symbolism in literature. In inaccuracies is the fault of the note taker.

  • Be sure to use the correct symbol to represent the thing.
  • An object or event can present an abstract theme to the story. For example a stop sign means caution or stopping. An eagle on the other hand may represent freedom. A musical score has different symbols to represent how music is played.
  • People don’t always agree on the meaning. It’s open for interpretation.
  • Use symbols not to show yourself as being smart or witty but it is a means to provide information in a short space. It will show more and less telling. It also creates a more active ingredient for the reader. Symbolism creates resonance in your fiction.
  • Resonance has to do with sound and tone vibrations. with symbolism you can enrich the reader as they read your work.
  • The presenter first thought that a pyramid would make a good illustration with symbolism but realize that the more accurate representation was a spiral going from small to large
  • Asimiles and metaphors are comparisons to things. An example might be love is a rock. The love is a Battlefield.
  • Consented to symbolism is it might look stupid if you use the wrong comparison of sound cliché.
  • Most symbolism matches the universe. For example you shouldn’t use the image of pond for a character who lives on the space station. They may not be familiar with what a pond is.
  • Small spots of symbolism can be briefly distributed throughout your book. While the bigger scale symbolism might be what the actual entire book represents.
  • An example might be of a woman dreaming of her husband. When she wakes up her bed is empty. This could depict the sorrel and loss of her husband or could represent her freedom after divorce. It could be interpreted as being lonely or free.
  • A good example of symbolism was in the force awakens the sun is being drained. As on solo meets his son and fellow tries to save his son the last of the sun above the planet is about to go out. They go completely out when the son kills his father. It represents that he’s now completely dark not redeemable. This symbol is essential to the plotm for examplek the sun dying was because is being used of fuel for the planet destroyer.
  • Dialogue – characters be in polite in conversation but that she hiding the storm inside. While around them a storm is growing and become spheres which represent their internal conflict.
  • Symbolism can be used for foreshadowing. Sirens in the background of the previous scene can foreshadow as a threat coming. Practice of character, who feels left out?
  • How could a character show their internal wish for success? This might be shown by how the character notices how well-dressed wealthy people are. They buy a lottery ticket.
  • Colors may also represent a personality.
  • Clothes, food, music can symbolize personality and personality traits. Their preferences show the reader who they are.
  • Motif is something that repeats throughout this book or story. One example would be how churches all share a similar window configuration or seating configuration.
  • An object peppered in a book could illustrate a certain emotion.
  • Archetype is staying that are universal to all cultures such as the hero’s journey
  • Allegory – everything is symbolized.
  • Symbolism is another tool to make your story more useful.
