Careers in writing:

The following are some notes I took at a previous life universe and everything symposium.

  • Learn to edit yourself by stepping back from your work.
  • Don’t have an ego. Otherwise your work will control you.
  • Someone else always controls the result of your writing, so place your ego on the integrity of your work, not on the sale.
  • Ask not only the first question, but the next, and the next.
  • Your first idea is a cliché. Your second idea is probably a cliché. Your third idea is probably okay. (Oh. S. Card)
  • self – promotion of your novel. The book company won’t advertise your book very much. You may even need to go on a promotional tour at your own expense.
  • Non-fiction is the best market.
  • Master the difference between active and passive. No matter where you’re writing, it must be active.
