    National treatment principle

: country will share copy right to other counties. Same rights are given to foreign authors as the authors of the home country.

    Neighboring rights

: is not a true copy right. Governed by Rome convention
Permit reproduction of material does not hurt interests of the author

Types of treaties:

    Universal Copyright convention

:
Rome convention: protections of producers, performers and Phonograms
91 countries US not one of the country
Countries who are members of Rome permitted to not give full benefits to non-members
Establish a min. level of protection. Grant exclusive rights to authors.
Permit reproduction of material does not hurt interests of the right holder

    TRIPS: Trade related aspects of property rights

159 counties have this agreement.
Many ways parallel the Rome treaty.
Includes software
It imposes obligations on member countries.
Have dispute resolutions between countries.
Can use trade sanctions in payment for an abuse of one country not following the treaty

    WIPO Copyright Treaty:

91 courtiers are members.
Expand the rights of authors.
Reinforce technology protection measures.

    WIPO Performance and Phonograms Treaty

92 countries are members.
Expand rights of performers and producers.
Reinforce technology protection measures.

    Wipo Treaty on Exceptions for the visually impaired

:
Treaty gives authority to organizations that create material to be converted to formats for use for impaired consumers. Authorized organizations can also share the material between countries.
Limits the scope of copyright law.
Copyright law: protects authorships: no administrative requirements.
Patent law: protects inventions. To apply for a patient, an inventor must comply with multiple administrative requirements. Must prove that their inventions is useful, novel and non-obvious
Agreements / treaties.

    Beme convention

:
Contains grand portions of the other six treaties. It was the first to be adopted. Started in 1858 and 10 countries are involved. Now 167 countries participate in this treaty.

    ACTA

: is an anti-counterfeiting trade agreement = still being discussed.
