Advice on character and the unexpected:

Here are a few notes on characterization from some workshop I attended last year.

 Characterization

–          Possible character traits:

she is a creature of habit;

she has a degree of doctor,

she observant,

she hasn’t had the best romance relationship.

–          Pacing:

big paragraph and then short sentences follow.

The unexpected

–          Leading reader to expect one thing to happen while setting up something different. Bill Crosby show, expect to get wise parental advice, and dad says parents are afraid of the children.

–          surprise: something happens or it is said that we truly weren’t expecting. Movie: Pirates of the carabinian. Jack bailing out water, gestures, standing at the mast above the water line of a sinking boat.
